White men bad; white dogs worse
White men bad; white dogs worse
04/05/2005 09:24 AMWe spent the weekend in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania with an
anthropologist friend who has two 3-year-old bitches (Lab and
Husky) and 4 acres of land on which Alex and Sammy
could play with them. One of the nice things about colleges
located in areas where real estate is cheap is that the professors
live close to the campus and are available to students for informal
dinners and shared extracurricular activities. Thus over the
weekend we encountered a few other Gettysburg College
professors. I asked one of them whether faculty could bring
their dogs to work. She replied "The college's Affirmative
Action lawyer, before she left, made up a lot of new rules. One
of them was that junior and senior faculty could not sleep
together. Another was to ban dogs in the buildings."
This is a good measure of how desperate PhDs are for jobs as
college professors. The college pays lower salaries, to people
of the same age, as the public high school down the street. The
high school teachers were able to go to work at age 22 without
suffering through a long period of starvation wages as graduate
assistants. The high school teachers are union members who ever
have to worry about losing their job, compared to the college
professors who live for 7 years in fear of being tossed out as a
middle-aged has-been ("denied tenure" is the polite term for this
event). And now these poor souls are expected to get through
their day without a dog at their side and without the possibility of
an interlude with a more senior professor.
[Note to parents: if you want to know why tuition prices have
risen so fast, consider that a very small liberal arts school was
paying a full-time lawyer to work on affirmative action; Walmart has a
"Chief Diversity Officer" but they had $billions in revenue over which
to spread the cost.]

To those concerned, there are no plans to include sexual and
racial designations of those whose work is included in this weblog.
But for one day it seemed a worthwhile exercise or demonstration, and
so it was.
As Tim Jarrett pointed
a> out, there are so many other dimensions to a person, for example, I
could tell his geographic story in a nutshell. Tim hails from the
Boston area (Arlington I think) and therefore about now is fed up with
cold and snow, and is ready for the trees to bloom and the first
flowers of spring. You can expect some irrational exuberance sometime
in the next few weeks at Chez Jarrett.
I might guess at his national heritage, but then in the US,
that's fairly pointless. Some people with very anglo-sounding names
had them changed at Ellis Island, or changed by a racially-conscious
father or mother. His parental status might be interesting, whether
he's married, divorced, widowed or single. How many siblings does he
have, what genders, and was he first born, last, or somewhere
inbetween? Does he like dark meat or white? If you tell him he has to
ride a roller coaster will he make some kind of excuse, or rush to be
in the first car, or something inbetween? What kind of car does he
drive? Where did he go to school?
Every human being who's lived for any appreciable time has lots
of stories. And if they have a good blog, the probability is (imho)
that they also have a good heart, and are trying in some
non-self-glorifying way to make the world a better place.
I was kidding when I said women should pull their weight, but I
wasn't kidding when I asked them to stop complaining so much.
If you have something to say that's on-topic to Scripting News
readers, and I know about it, I will include what you say, whether
you're black or Latino, female, gay. I love the idea that technology
can help bring us together by being a topic we discuss. But you have
to help out by sending an email with a pointer to your piece, or get
someone who I subscribe to to point to it. In other words, there's no
magic to it, follow Ben Franklin's advice
a> and write something worth remembering, and I will help the world
beat a path to your home page. With pleasure.

Devil in the White City
Devil in the White City
08/07/2004 03:23 PM
I've just finished reading a copy of Larson's
Devil
in the White City sent to me by a relative who heard of my
love for
Isaac's
Storm.
Devil is a biography of two men who
were
central to the 1893
Chicago World's
Fair. One,
Daniel
H. Burnham would become one of the most influential architects and
city planners of the early 20th century. Burnham organized a crew of
the architectural, engineering and artistic elite including landscape
artist
Frederick Law
Olmstead
(famous for Central Park and Biltmore) in an effort to better the
Paris
world's fair of 1889. The Chicago exposition would be profoundly
influential for American culture introducing Arabic Dance (the tune
for "There's a place in France/where the naked ladies dance"
was created in Chicago), the Ferris
Wheel, Shredded Wheat, and helping to settle the
Battle of the
Currents
between Edison and Tesla. The fair drew a large variety of larger
than
life figures including Archduke Ferdinand, Elizabeth B. Anthony,
Buffalo Bill Cody and the
mostly forgotten master of self promotion
Citizen
Train.
Devil is also a biography of the man given credit for
America's first recognized serial murders, the self-named
H. H. Holmes. At the start
of the fair, Holmes changed his
modus operandi from marrying
and
killing women as part of insurance and real estate scams, to running a
hotel from which an unknown number of his female tenants never checked
out. Although information on Holmes's activities is scanty, he serves
as a mirror of the utopia of civic safety created by Burnham. Larson
makes the argument that the contrasts between optimisim and pessimism,
well-intentioned virtue and depravity, urban utopia with a few blocks
from slums, would set the tone for the 20th century.
