salvation after all. Small companies, some publicly traded, are
burning cash trying to turn Wi-Fi into viable business. Some have
already shut down.

latest security features planned for the next major Windows XP
software update, known as Service Pack 2.Executives also faced
persistent questions from customers about whether the latest features
will interfere with other security technology. Speaking at the
company's monthly Executive Circle webcast, Mike Nash, corporate
vice-president of the Security Business and Technology Unit (SBTU)
showed off features to simplify the management of security technology
like anti-virus and desktop firewalls, and to protect users from

Linux desktop viability myths exploded
Linux desktop viability myths exploded
08/05/2004 03:43 AMIf you look on the Web you can find many examples of experts claiming
that Linux is not ready for the desktop. Headlines like Why Windows
still beats Linux and Why Linux isn't ready for the Desktop are all
too common. In some cases, the commentators have valid points, but
often they perpetuate myths that simply are no longer true -- namely,
that Windows is easier, and that Linux application software is
lacking. The problem is, the pundits are comparing apples and
aardvarks.

Interfacing’s Charter Standard Add-on
06/25/2004 02:16 AMInterfacing today announced the availability of the latest version of
its award-winning BPM software Charter Standard Edition, a Microsoft
Office Visio Add-On. Charter Standard provides business users with a
low-cost, low-risk, dynamic and integrated process modeling
environment. Charter utilities are integrated directly into the Visio
engine, which effectively enables it to become a process data
repository where data can be captured and referenced. The new Charter
Standard offers an easy-to-model framework of process hierarchies,
activities, linked resources, flow entities, organizational units and
related content. Charter users benefit from standardized process
models, automated generation of “swimlane” views of all model aspects,
and more. [PRWEB Jun 25, 2004]

Linksys Network Storage Link, Turn Any
USB Harddrive Into Network Storage
06/15/2004 11:54 AM
While they're promoting it
with Maxtor, there's nothing stopping you from using Linksys's new
Network Storage Link (NSLU2) with any external USB hard drive to turn
it into a network storage device (not unlike the Mirra or other backup
units). Storage Link even provides passworded web-access to files and
multiple users (although they don't get into the details of how
multi-user sharing will work). Since the Storage Link works via RJ-45
(regular ol' Ethernet), there's nothing preventing you from attaching
it to a wireless router and using it over WiFi, either (albeit at
lower speeds than a wired network, of course). Even better, it sounds
like you can continue to add additional USB hard drives to the device
to increase storage as you go along. Not bad for $100.
