No More Free FTP for Uncle Sam

No More Free FTP for Uncle Sam 09/05/2004 09:42 AM

Ipswitch yanks free FTP software from government market: I've used WS_FTP faithfully for years. At work, I've paid for the professional version (v9 is just out and it's quite good — they finally updated their sorry user interface), but at home I use the Limited Edition that they're talking about here.

Ipswitch has pulled WS_FTP Limited Edition, its free FTP software, from the government market.

Agencies no longer have the license to use the free utility program or the right to distribute it, according to company officials.[...]

Shawn McCarthy, program manager in government and education at IDC, said that although the free utility has long been popular, "the need for increased security — including secure connectivity, encryption for greater file security and key matching technology — is now driving government users in a new direction."

Nothing in this article says it's not still free for personal use.

Uncle Sam Through Saudi Eyes

Uncle Sam Through Saudi Eyes 03/15/2003 05:14 PM
Colin Powell and the Marketing of Uncle Sam is an idiosyncratic rant by Afnan Fatani, professor of stylistics at King Abdul Aziz University, in the English-language Saudi journal Arab News, arguing the sinister implications of Colin Powell's employment of advertising experts to put the American message to the world. Starting with Nelson Mandela's recent comments, among them that the U.S. is disregarding the U.N. because its leader, Kofi Annan, is black, Prof. Fatani achieves some rhetorical fireworks from the observation that "Uncle Ben is not Uncle Sam."
During the days of slavery in America, white men discovered the powerful singing voices of their black slaves. Today, judging from the sleek performance of Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, American leaders have apparently discovered and successfully utilized the articulate skills of their black citizens. Too bad the message these black politicians are promoting is Zionist war and destruction, and not Christian peace and goodwill. Too bad that Powell and the Bush administration have between them tainted the white wholesome goodness of Uncle Ben’s Rice.
According to a December 2002 story in Salon, Powell had sa id, upon hiring ad mogul Charlotte Beers at State, "Hey, she got me to buy Uncle Ben's rice." Interestingly, Richard Lyons posted an op-ed based on a very similar conceit in February 2002 — though without the bizarre racial overtones. Didn't German soldiers taunt black GIs with the fact of their second-class citizenship during WWII? Stylistic it is, a mishmash of apocalyptic scriptural interpretation and Internet antiwar rhetoric. Fellow Netizens, I give you our Saudi allies on this, 12 Muharram 1424, the eve of war.

Sony to create "iTunes for movies,"
release 500 films digitally within a
year
03/31/2005 11:46 PM
Xeni Jardin: At a conference in Santa Monica today, Sony Pictures Digital Entertainment SVP Michael Arrieta said:
"We want to set business models, pricing models, distribution models like (Apple Computer CEO Steve) Jobs did for music, but for the film industry," [said Arrieta], "I'm trying to create the new 'anti-Napster."

To that end, Arrieta said, his group plans to digitize Sony Pictures' top 500 films and make them available for the first time in various digital environments within the next year. He said the distribution for films like "Spider-Man 2" will go beyond just Movielink, the video-on-demand joint venture of Sony Pictures and several other major studios, which to date has hosted a limited library of Sony's movies.

For example, Sony plans to sell and make films available in flash memory for mobile phones in the next year, Arrieta said. It also will further develop its digital stores for downloading and owning films on the PC, he said in an interview. Sony's plans--and similar moves by other studios--are likely to avoid empowering any one technology company--such as Apple in the music equation--and allow studios to pocket more of the profits. The philosophy in Hollywood is "Define your own agenda or someone else will for you."

Download-To-Own Movies: Get Less For
More!
01/16/2004 01:03 PM
You may recall CinemaNow - the major studio backed online movie downloading company - from the review in the NY Times last year which included such great quotes as: "How CinemaNow stays in business is a marvel. The site is so marred by typos and poor programming, it could have been a high school sophomore's first Web design project." and "CinemaNow stand[s] out primarily for [its] puny selection, poor video quality and overly rigid copy protection." A ringing endorsement. Well, now it looks like they're trying to adjust their business model, and instead of just allowing people to watch movies for a limited time, they're starting up a "download-to-own" feature complete with annoying copy protection (of course). As with the download movie rentals, you get less for more. Now, instead of actually owning a DVD that you can play anywhere on any machine (and which comes with extras and perhaps a booklet with more info), you get a digital copy of the movie that is completely clamped down on the machine you downloaded it on. Also, the prices are more expensive than buying a DVD. A quick look at their featured choice for "download-to-own" shows that you can get the same movie, brand new, on DVD at Amazon for $3.75 less. They're also claiming that you can now start watching a movie 30 seconds after it begins downloading. If it really works well, that's great, but if it includes typical video buffer loading pauses, I imagine it's not going to make many movie renters happy.

People Don't Like Going To The Movies
Any More

People Don't Like Going To The Movies
Any More
06/17/2005 03:33 PM
The movie industry has been on this crusade lately, with MPAA head going on and on saying that the reason people aren't going to the movies is becau se they're at home downloading movies. However, most people recognize that's unlikely to be the leading cause of problems for the industry. Instead, it's that movies are now compe ting with a lot of other entertainment options and the experience of going out to the movies isn't very much fun any more. The theaters all seem crowded. You have to sit through what seems like half an hour of commercials. The prices just keep getting higher. And, of course, you have to deal with rude and annoying people in the theater who seem to have no problem annoying everyone else. So, is it really any surprise at all that a whopping 73% of people surveyed say they prefer watching movies at home? Is it any wonder that so many in the industry are scared to death of DVDs being released at the same time as the movie itself? The theater industry (not the movie industry as a whole) is facing something of a crisis -- but it has nothing to do with people downloading, and everything to do with theater owners inability to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience, and working on ways to make that social experience a lot more enjoyable. Theater owners in China reali zed this, and saw their box office take shoot up to record levels. Theaters in the UK are starting to recognize this and are addin g extra incentives to go out to the theater. If the movie industry would stop rushing to blame downloading and look at the advantages they offer while minimizing a lot of the things that annoy people, perhaps they wouldn't be having so many problems these days. Of course, rather than do that, they're trying to becom e even more hated while begging Congress to come up with ways to protect their business model.
