Rupert sez, "On May 4th, above the Greenwich Meridian in Greenwich Park, London, a cloud of a thousand radio-sensitive glowing balloons will monitor the airwaves and respond by changing colour and brightness. Everyone's invited to bring their mobile phones and make contact with the cloud, which will also listen to atmospheric phenomena and the cackle of the rest of London's radio users." Don Park's Fireside/Beachside Chats

Don Park's Fireside/Beachside Chats 02/12/2004 06:13 PM

Franklin D. Roosevelt made radio addresses by a fireplace called Fireside Chats which I always admired about.  I have been to a few Blogger's Dinners and Geek Dinners but never felt satisfied coming back home because, while I met many people, depth of the conversations weren't deep enough.  I could chat online with practically anyone on earth, but such virtual exchanges are not as immersive as face to face conversations.

So I am thinking about having a fireside chat once a month with a handful of guests.  I don't have a location picked out yet, but it should be a cozy location somewhere on the Penninsula, maybe a backroom of a bar or restaurant.  There was a nice little bar just off highway 92 at top of the mountain range I visited long time ago which would be perfect, but I am not sure if it is still there.

During the summer, it can be held during the day at a beach (Half Moon Bay?) on weekends with cold beer.  What do you guys think?

Pay To Have Your CDs Turned Into MP3s

Pay To Have Your CDs Turned Into MP3s 01/26/2004 12:42 PM
I've mentioned before that I'm still a bit behind on using digitized music, as it seems like quite a chore to rip all my CDs. It's been something of an ad hoc process. Every once in a while, when I want to listen to a specific CD and have the music stored on my computer, I'll rip that CD. However, ripping them all (over 1,000) seems like quite a process. That said, I'm still not sure I'd be interested in a service that would rip your CDs into MP3s for you. Still, it appears plenty of people are interested and are paying about a dollar per CD to have the process done. While the service was originally intended for DJs, many people are apparently signing up to have their personal collections ripped as well. Of course, you have to wonder how sustainable this business is. You certainly aren't going to have many repeat customers.

David Pescovitz: skull_stickerTransmedia artist Genesis P-Orridge has reactivated his seminal industrial/trance band Psychic TV to tour Europe and the United States beginning this month. Last winter, I was fortunate enough to catch a rehearsal and they sounded fabulous--tight, energized, and... happy. (Douglas Rushkoff was playing keyboards with the group for several dates late last year but will not be joining this particular "de-tour.")

Genesis is quite a sight these days as well. As part of the Breaking Sex art exploration he's immersed in with his other half, Lady Jaye, the two received identical breast implants on Valentine's Day 2003. Gen's new mantra? "S/he is Her/e."

Test-Driven

Test-Driven 07/05/2004 10:23 PM

I started reading Kent Beck's Test-Driven Development: By Example over the weekend.  Tim Bray menti oned the book a while back and his impression of TDD differed from mine so I figured I was overlooking something.  Boy, I sure was.

I thought TDD (Test-Driven Development) was just development with a strong emphasis on tests.  It's more than that.  What threw me off was the word 'development' which encompasses the entire development process including design, implemention, evolution, etc.  The core gem of an idea behind TDD impacts the design phase most heavily and it's uncovered in rather tedious detail by Kent Beck.  Tedious yet startling is what I felt.

The simple idea is this:

Design software by writing tests first.

By 'software', I mean services, frameworks, modules, components, and objects.

Since tests are written before the module being tested is written, the experience of writing of the test drives the module's designing process.  More importantly, you are looking at the API, of the module being designed, from the API client's perspective.  Net result is higher quality API design.

While TDD during the design process is enough of a benefit for engineers to put into use immediately, TDD has problems because test cases are software and there are maintenance cost associated with them.  Having a tool like Eclipse helps but much more is needed to help the engineers document the tests, keep track of them, and reuse as needed.

I think a visual tool that lets engineers drag and drop tests into test suites for various purposes like release testing, runtime testing, diagnostic testing is essential.  TDD also encourages refactoring through out the development process which calls for more flexible source control system than CVS.

How Amazon Turned A Profit

How Amazon Turned A Profit 01/28/2004 03:38 PM
The most amazing thing, to me, about Jeff Bezos was that he never (publicly, at least) took all the post-boom Wall Street naysayers to task for completely changing their minds in 2000 and 2001. For years, Wall Street was telling Bezos to grow faster and faster and not to worry about profits - and he did so. Then, suddenly, as the dot com bubble collapsed, they started yelling at him "but where are your profits?" even though they were the same ones who were telling him to forget about profits the month before. To his credit, Bezos (calmly) appears to have turned the big ship Amazon around, and is now meeting the profitability standard that Wall Street now values. While there are a ton of stories talking about Amazon's earnings announcement (yes, they were profitable for the year last year), the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has a much more interesting article talking about how Amazon has managed to change over the years to make all of this possible.

nonuser writes "MIT's Technology Review retracted two stories on reaction by HP rank and file employees to the firing of CEO Carly Fiorina, both written by a New York freelance journalist named Michelle Delio. The stories referred to a Hungarian immigrant, identified only by the initials G.S., who worked at HP's Imaging System Laboratory for nearly three decades before resigning in disgust in 2003. G.S. compared Fiorina's leadership with that of the Communist regime he had fled. The only problem was the employee apparently didn't exist, as HP officials pointed out to the embarrassed Tech Review editor." Delio (who also used to write articles for Wired News) apparently still insists that the guy is real -- but no one else can find any evidence of him. It's also not clear if this is a case where Delio made the guy up, or someone tricked Delio into believing he was real. The original Tech Review article was a bit strange. When reading it, it seemed that the guy put in enough information about himself that it would be quite easy to figure out who he was if you worked at HP Labs. Still, what may be most interesting is that HP actually did an internal investigation to figure out who the guy was.

First malware for OS X?

First malware for OS X? 04/09/2004 04:04 PM
One of the selling points of OS X has been, to date, the lack of any viruses, worms, or Trojan horses. Intego reports that it has identified a Trojan horse called MP3Concept.
Mac OS X displays the icon of the MP3 file, with an .mp3 extension, rather than showing the file as an application, leading users to believe that they can double-click the file to listen to it. But double clicking the file launches the hidden code, which can damage or delete files on computers running Mac OS X, then iTunes to play the music contained in the file, to make users think that it is really an MP3 file . While the first versions of this Trojan horse that Intego has isolated are benign, this technique opens the door to more serious risks.
Link

Meeroh sez: The Mac OS X mp3 trojan is being blown completely out of proportion. Quick review of facts so far:

1. It was pointed out in a Usenet thread that it is possible to embed arbitrary data in an mp3 2. It was subsequently suggested that the arbitrary data could be executable 3. An enterprising developer proceeded to then create a file which to any mp3 player will appear as an mp3 file, but the Mac OS X Finder sees it as an application 4. An anti-virus vendor published advertising for their product saying that it has a cure for this form of Trojan.

Some other relevant points:

1. This has little to do with Mac OS X vs. Mac OS 9. The exact same file will do the exact same thing on Mac OS 9 -- be playable by mp3 players, and act as an application 2. This has little to do with Mac OS X using extensions to identify file types. The icon shown by the Finder could be embedded in the file itself, in which case the file would look like an mp3 file regardless of its name. 3. This trick requires using the resource fork, and therefore the file has to be transmitted encoded. Any mp3 file that is transferred as a plain binary file (as opposed to a Mac binary file, with the resource fork), is harmless. 4. The fact that the file can be played in am mp3 player is irrelevant; if the trojan were malicious, the user would be doomed after double-clicking on it regardless of whether the file is a valid audio file.

To summarize, a Mac application can have any icon or name whatsoever, including a name and an icon that make it look like a document. Exactly what happens when you receive such an application (in email or by downloading it in your browser) depends on your settings, but I am not aware of any case in which it will be automatically launched.

Therefore, to activate this Trojan you have to either receive a Mac-encoded attachment and double-click on it in the Finder, or you have to download a Mac-encoded a file (which is then usually decoded to your desktop) and double-click it in the Finder.

The only reason that this is news is that a vendor of anti-virus software took it as an opportunity to generate some advertising, as far as I can tell.

Malware Inc.

Malware Inc. 04/04/2005 08:50 PM
In news that should surprise absolutely none of you, it appears that the people who used to write viruses for ego purposes are increasingly writing spyware for money instead. Basically, what the study (bias alert: done by a security company who's trying to sell you stuff) points out is that, just like with file sharing applications, spyware and adware have become a business model for virus writers. They're wrapping up their viruses with spyware; they still get the ego boost, but also some profit as well. No wonder virus companies are desperately trying to come up with decent anti-spyware offerings.
