Ms. Jardin, Though you might be intereested in this tidbit. I got a
phone call from International Communications Research (ICR) for a

services, political affiliation, and consumption of coffee, tobacco,
and fast food products, I got this series of questions.
"Do you have an Internet connection? Have you ever visited the website
subservientchicken.com? Would you visit it again?"
These were followed up by questions about the BK Tendercrisp Sandwich
and their low-carb menu. Looks like they're looking to evaluate the
potency of their stealth marketing campaign.

aeon points us to a
bizarre marketing move by junk-food empire Burger King:
...For when "your way" calls for an enslaved chicken,
Burger King invites you to "have chicken your way" by offering you the
newest in ads even veteran AdBusters won't want to bust: The
Subservient Chicken. He "riverdances", he "throws pillows", he "builds
forts" and he even takes "bonghits". He's technically a rooster, but
let's not worry about that when we can tell him to "play air guitar",
"moonwalk", or "grab crotch like michael jackson."
The Subservient Chicken: more than a furry's dream come true, more
than a timewaster for stoned college kids; this method of advertizing
just begs to be copied like so many memes. Plus, you can tell him to
"die".
How very interesting. I wonder if
the ad execs who came up with this
realize (a) the Internet is so weird that genuine furry submissive
fetish poultry sites with live webcams already exist, and (b) (this is
absolutely true) legendary porn magnate Larry Flynt claims to have
lost his virginity to a chicken? If so, the new Burger King campaign
is extra-creepy, hold the fries. And if not, they really ought to be

An R-Rated Trademark Dispute?
An R-Rated Trademark Dispute?
04/19/2005 04:16 AMThe MPAA really does get a little crazy when it comes to over-reacting
on intellectual property issues. Their latest move is to send out
cease-and-desist letters to sites that host fan fiction -- not because
those made up stories use characters, places and themes from real
movies -- but
because
they use the (trademarked) MPAA movie rating system. That's
right, if you happen to label your story as rated G, PG, PG-13, R or
NC-17, you'd better watch out, the MPAA might come after you. Of
course, they seem to ignore the fact that this system has become
common around the world, is
hardly taking anything away from
the MPAA's own system (if anything, it
enhances it), and also
is useful in keeping age-inappropriate stories off the screens of
those who shouldn't see them.

Object relational mappings are
over-rated...
01/01/2004 06:18 PM... At least according to Tim Bray:
Lots of architects have learned, painfully, that you usually can't
magick relational rows away behind object/class abstractions. The
right way to think about a database is as a set of normalized tables
that are designed to be addressed with SQL strings.
This brings in to focus something I've been thinking about for
quite a while. I always try to abstract away the details of the data
storage layer behind some kind of interface, so that none of my front
end code ever has to make a direct database call, instead calling
methods on my application objects with names like "get_user_by_id" or
"get_blog_entries_for_date". The idea is that I could, if I wanted to,
completely switch out the underlying data source. I should also be
able to write new front-end functionality that calls the existing
application layer methods without having to change anything in the
data access code.
There are a couple of problems here. Firstly, I've already
got a data abstraction layer in the form of SQL. Although there are
many discrepancies between implementations, basic SQL statements such as
selects and joins should work on pretty much any database.
Additionally, in my three years of building web applications I can't
think of a single time I've needed to change the data layer for an
existing application.
Modern database features such as stored procedures and constraints
allow you to move huge chunks of application logic that relates to
data coherency in to the database itself. In fact, PostgreSQL even
allows you to write stored procedures in third party languages such as
Python or Perl. With carefully written stored procedures, much of the
important application logic could live in the database along with the
data itself - a concept comparable to object oriented programming
where the data and the methods that can be run on the data are
encapsulated together.
I certainly haven't made up my mind one way or the other, and at
the end of the day the best approach is the one that gets a project
completed in a reasonable time frame and that results in easily
maintainable code. Plenty of food for thought, in any case.

Trillian Vulnerability - Security Flaw
Found in Trillian IM
Trillian Vulnerability - Security Flaw
Found in Trillian IM
03/27/2005 05:55 AMCNet news is reporting today that a potentially serious security flaw
has been found in the Trillian instant messaging client.
Trillian is an instant messaging (IM) software which allows users to
interact with people using many different IM services, such as AOL
Instant Messenger and MSN Messenger, using just one instant messaging
client (Trillian) instead of having to run each instant messenger
software for each service separately.
A large number of people use Trillian, and not surprisingly, as it has
been estimated that at least 25% of home users instant message with
people on at least two different IM networks at the same time.
The security hole discovered in Trillian will allow a malicious hacker
to shut down programs running on the target machine, and even to take
control of the entire computer.
Trillian’s CEO, Scott Werndorfer, played the flaw down as being
“extremely low risk", stating that the hacker would need to
create a fake instant messaging software, then send a message to the
Trillian user, and then have the user accept the message. More at
Source.

Wired -- Larry Flynt: Life, Liberty and
Pursuit of Porn
02/19/2004 11:34 AM
For today's edition of Wired News, I
interview
Larry Flynt. As
Hustler magazine nears its 30-year anniversary, the adult
entertainment magnate reflects on how technology has changed his
business, the Justice Department's new "porn czar," the
f
irst major federal obscenity prosecution in over a decade, how the
Patriot Act relates to porn, and why online anonymity matters. I also
asked him about some recent
allegations regarding George W. Bush that were attributed to
Flynt, and published by
New York Daily News. His response: a
new book he's releasing on July 4 will document a year-long
investigation into those claims. Snip:
Larry Flynt: [Technology has] had a dramatic effect. In the
1980s, publishing was 80 percent of my business. Now it's about 20
percent, and the rest is Internet or video. I don't think many people
anticipated how the Internet was going to revolutionize the way we
disseminate information. Now everybody does -- but some did in time,
and some didn't. That's one of the reasons Penthouse filed for
bankruptcy. They were relying totally on publishing. We knew in the
early 1990s that we needed to diversify and branched out into a lot of
different areas. Technology still has many surprises for us down the
road, particularly in the wireless area. It's going to be absolutely
phenomenal. In the next two to five years, you'll see the computer and
your home television set merging. You'll have one remote control, and
they'll effectively be one device.
WN: Do you ever get tired of having to answer for the actions
of some of your more extreme colleagues in the industry?
Flynt: No. I let them do their thing and I do mine. I try to
set an example for them. But I've been to prison, and I don't think
some of them have. Let them try it, maybe it will change their
attitude.
