07/27/2004 09:30 PMI interviewed CEO Rod O'Connor about some of the ideas in yesterday's

post. I've been trying to understand the
thinking behind the convention-as-television-show. Figured I'd bring
the puzzle to Rod, CEO. This is my first try at audio blogging, and
so it's rough. His answers I will weave into another post. Listen
for yourself as O'Connor defends--and ably explains-- the logic of the
made-for-TV convention. And he reveals why the party decided to
invite bloggers. They're an "internet property," which, like a
broadcast property, is a way Americans "get their information" these
days. It's fifteen minutes that will help you understand what you are
watching this week.

Mark Frauenfelder:

I'm starting to get interested in
podcasting, so I interviewed Matt Webb, the co-editor of the new book,
Mind Hacks, just published by O'Reilly. It's 25 minutes long, and I
even created a cheesy Garageband theme song for what I hope is the
first of many interviews.
Note: Matt wrote me with the following info -- "This is the McGu
rk video I was talking about. Just proving that I'm nothing
without my notes, I incorrectly remembered the
McGurk sounds! It's a visual 'ga' and an aural 'ba' that combine to
the
perception of 'da.' No 'va' at all (that's a variation on the
experiment)."

Claim of P2P's demise highly overstated,

06/22/2005 01:49 AMCory Doctorow:
Entertainment Media Research's bogus study on music downloading
concluded that "35% of music listeners are using legal download
services, and that the percentage will soon surpass illegal downloads,
currently at 40%." A Slashdot reader trashes the bad statistical
comparisons here, with remarkable acuity:
This is a classic example of bogus statistics. The two figures have
absolutely nothing to do with each other. The 30% of people using
legal downloads might be mutually exclusive or totally overlapping
with the 40% that use illegal downloads. The numbers need not total to
100% (and could total to more than 100%). At best we can conclude:
1. No greater than 70% of music listeners download music (legal or
illegal) -- i.e., as much as 30% of music listeners simply don't
download music.
2. No fewer than 40% of music listeners download music (legal or
illegal).
3. At most, 30% use both legal and illegal downloads.
4. It's possible (based on this limited data) that no one does both
illegal and legal downloading.
In next month's survey, both numbers could go up or down since the
survey does not ask "do you ONLY download music from legal/ illegal
sources." Moreover, the survey provides no estimates of volumes --
illegal downloaders could be downloading 10X or 10X less than their
legal-downloading counterparts. Or people that download legal music
could be the biggest "pirates" and this survey would be none the
wiser.
