Why 'Shared Source' Is a Lie
03/20/2003 01:05 PMMicrosoft is under a lot of pressure these days, mostly from Linux and
the open source camp providing attractive alternatives to the closed

up with a concept that would give its marketing forces some ammo in
their fight against Linux and open source.

P2P studies say that it's not hurting
music
03/28/2005 07:32 PMCory Doctorow:
Copyfight's Alex Wexelblat has a doozy of an editorial on the
pseudoscience behind claims that P2P is costing the music industry
money:
...[E]very study that has been done since Napster has shown that music
sharing has no negative effects on music sales (CD or downloaded). In
fact, some show a positive effect. If that message got into the public
consciousness the Cartel would be much worse off. Therefore, they've
done all they can to frame the debate in terms of their scares, not
science. So we have the scene - surely worthy of Beckett - in which a
certified class of 27,000 songwriters and music publishers will argue
against Grokster, as Tony Mauro put it on law.com "casting it as a
life-or-death struggle over theft of their means of livelihood."
There's just one eensy weensy problem here - NOBODY's livelihood is
being stolen. It's just not happening. There were no WMD in Iraq,
there was no cocaine on that boat (*), and music sharing does not cost
artists money.

The new issue of
the Journal for
Computer-Mediated Communication explores emergent language
practices in email, text messaging ,
newsgroups , and instant messenger (
IM ).
The multilingual Internet raises a number of practical and scholarly
questions, ranging from the distinctive features of email or chat in
languages with specific font-related requirements, to code-switching
in bilingual or multilingual online communication, to the effects of
the English language and global "netspeak" (Crystal, 2001) on
[computer-mediated communication] in local languages. Linguistic
research has shown that spoken languages vary in their structures,
meanings and usage—is this equally true on the Internet, where
speakers of different languages come into contact and influence one
another on a scale never before imagined?
Topics include
Arabic and
Greek scripts transformed into ASCII text by instant messenger,
the
spread of English , and
gender empowerment in chat .

And The Internet
More Misleading Studies About Children
And The Internet
09/07/2004 04:07 PMA group in the UK called NCH can't seem to put out a reasonable,
unbiased study to save their lives. This is the charity group that is
spending so much time worrying about children that they can't be
bothered with coming up with unbiased studies. Everything leans so
far in one direction, it's almost silly. First they
blamed
the internet for child porn as if it wouldn't exist otherwise,
followed by a survey using leading questions to make it look as though
parents
were afraid 3G wireless was dangerous to their kids. To top that
they put out a fear-mongering report about
11 year
olds gambling online, when all they had done was coax a single
16-year-old to sign up for an online gambling site. Their latest is
along the same lines. They start with the assumption that "the
internet is bad for children" and then absolutely freak out when
many
parents don't seem to agree with them. Rather than think that,
perhaps, many parents actually understand and appreciate the risks of
the internet -- knowing that a properly monitored and trained kid can
handle the internet -- NCH immediately says parents need to be
educated. In fact, the study shows that many who aren't worried say
so because they believe their child has been adequately taught about
the risks. Whether or not that's true is an open question. However,
this NCH study doesn't go down that road, preferring to simply freak
out that some parents might dare to trust their kids on the internet.

02/01/2005 08:42 PMOn Saturday I attended MaxItOut, a local charity event inspired by a
4-year old bacterial meningitis survivor whose parents are friends of
mine. Bradbury Software was among the event's sponsors, which led to
an almost surreal experience.
The fundraiser featured performances by country music stars, and
the logos of each sponsor were projected onto a screen during the
entire concert. For me, it was, well, very unusual to see the
"TopStyle" and "FeedDemon" logos appear behind Keith
Urban, Faith Hill and Wynonna as they played.
For the record, I've never been a huge country music fan, but I'm
so glad that I attended the event and offered a small contribution
through my sponsorship. Well over a quarter of a million dollars was
raised for meningitis research, and nobody left that night without
being touched by the dedication of parents whose children are affected
by the disease.

04/30/2004 12:16 PMIt turns out that not only did the feds
charge
some American spammers under CAN SPAM this week, but they also
went after some Australian spammers as
well. The article is unclear, but it sounds like they're not
using CAN SPAM for the complaint against the Australian spammers, but
are instead going after them for fraudulent advertising. Still, it
does raise the question about how far the arms of US law can reach in
going after spammers. I imagine it's not so difficult to go after
Australian spammers, since the two countries are closely aligned and
are likely to cooperate. However, as spammers migrate to less closely
allied countries, will the feds be able to do anything?
