No One Will Take Down Microsoft But
Microsoft
04/09/2004 04:04 PM

Bob Cringely is back with his latest piece on the future of Microsoft where he predicts that no one will be able to "take down" Microsoft at this point. They've successfully outmaneuvered every real challenger and have enough cash to coast their way past any threats from open source offerings (why he thinks open source offerings will just fade away is unclear). However, he thinks that, because of this, Microsoft will grow arrogant and bloated (as opposed to just plain arrogant?) and will miss the boat down the road, leading them to their own destruction. This seems like it's all relative. If they miss the boat, it's because another company (or group or set of people) builds that boat and goes with it. In other words, Microsoft doesn't fail (or succeed) in a vacuum - though Cringely seems to think that maybe they've created one.

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-050:
Vulnerability in Microsoft Word and
Microsoft Excel Could Allow Arbitrary
Code to Run (831527)
11/13/2003 12:36 AM
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Word that could allow malicious code execution. This vulnerability exists due to to the way Word checks the length of a data value (Macro names) embedded in a document. If a specially crafted document were to be opened it could overflow a data value in Word and allow arbitrary code to be executed. If successfully exploited, an attacker could then take the same actions as the user had permissions to carry out, such as adding, changing or deleting data or files, communicating with a web site or formatting the hard drive.

MVPs keep bashing competition of
Microsoft (Linux, Symbian) and cajoling
users to get Microsoft products
01/28/2004 01:31 PM
Apparently Microsoft MVPs not only are helping users of Microsoft products, but are also officially bashing Microsoft´s competition: Robert Levy says that Windows Mobile from Microsoft is better than Linux, because operators will earn less money with Linux (and thus forgets one important factor: users don´t like to part with their money very much): Linux is proclaiming "Pick me! I´ll decrease your costs!" while Microsoft is getting right to the heart of the matter by boasting "Pick me! I´ll increase your revenue." One offers to cut the cost of each device by a few dollars. The other offers to increase the amount of money customers pay to their carrier each month by a few dollars. This doesn´t sound like a very difficult decision to me.
