Online Casinos Advertising Over Gamblers
Anonymous Page
04/09/2004 04:04 PM

It's not entirely clear what's happening here, but people are saying that when they visit the Gambler's Anonymous website in Australia, they're receiving pop-up ads for online casinos. As you might imagine, this is not considered appropriate. However, I'm confused as to what's actually happening. The folks running the Gambler's Anonymous site say that they have no control over the pop-ups, which wouldn't make sense if it's their site. Also, I visited the site and there don't seem to be any pop-ups at all. About the only thing I can guess is that these pop-ups are being caused by the type of insidious adware that we've been talking about quite frequently today. It would be nice if the report had more details.

Online Gamblers Are Suckers For Online

Online Gamblers Are Suckers For Online
Ads
06/22/2004 12:09 PM
Online advertisers love online gamblers. Not only are they dealing with addictive personalities with money to spare and a poor understanding of math, it also turns out that (in the UK, at least) online gamblers are suckers for online ads. They notice ads, they read ads, they remember ads, and they like ads much more than non-online gamblers. Now we know why every other online ad these days seems to be related to a casino. How long will it be until the major online advertising companies in the US use this data to "convince" the government to legalize online gambling here?

Online casinos can't stop pokerbots

Online casinos can't stop pokerbots 09/22/2004 10:22 AM
Cory Doctorow: Ed Felten's posted a fascinating rumination on the impossibility of excluding bots from online poker games, and what that means for online casinos:
By reiterating their anti-bot and anti-collusion rules, and by claiming to have mysterious enforcement mechanisms, online casinos may be able to stem the tide of cheating for a while. But eventually, bots and collusion will become the norm, and lone human players will be driven out of all but the lowest stakes games.

But there is another strategy. An online casino could encourage bots, and even set up bots-only games. The game would then become not a human vs. human card game but a human vs. human battle between bot designers for geekly mastery. I'll bet there are plenty of programmers out there who would like to give it a try.

Online Advertising May Get Less Annoying
As The Market Improves

Online Advertising May Get Less Annoying
As The Market Improves
05/25/2004 11:55 AM
Since the online advertising has rebounded (quite a bit), one very good consequence might be the fact that we'll actually be seeing fewer intrusive and annoying ads. When the ad market was struggling, publishers were willing to go with ever more intrusive and annoying ads, because advertisers were willing to pay more for them (stupidly believing that the more they annoyed users, the more they may buy from them). Lazy marketers have been spending lots of time trying to come up with more intrusive ways to get around the various blocks people have put up to stop intrusive and annoying advertising. Of course, this is even more pointless than just coming up with intrusive advertising in the first place. Specifically getting around a requested block tends to bring out quite a bit of anger in users - which doesn't seem likely to lead to a favorable buying decision for the advertiser. However, now that the market has rebounded, and publishers are realizing they're competing for visitors, not ad dollars, they're able to be a lot more picky in the ads they'll offer. They are more focused on not annoying their users with such intrusive ads, and making sure the user experience is much more welcoming. Of course, this doesn't mean they won't be seduced by newer formats - but it does mean visitors should let sites know when they find the advertising intrusive and annoying.
