(a) kicking ass; and (b) kicking my ass. Regular Lockergnome operations were suspended last week while we did a little spring cleaning. Turns out, there's more dust under the couch than previously anticipated. That, and we've decided to go out and buy new pieces of furniture. Oh, yes... and it's not spring. I've been so caught up in the maze of my personal and professional lives, that I completely forgot about the hour gain this weekend. I look out the window now and see California smoke, but those fires rival these which are burning in my own little world. "I'd drown apart from that which I learned to live without." My poetry is back with a vengeance....

Life Changes

Life Changes 10/29/2003 01:15 AM

So now it probably all makes sense why my posting habits here have declined to a mockable all-time-low.

If I had posted more frequently, my entries would have most likely been about the amount of stress I was under or how tired I was from working. And, if i posted that, I'm sure a number of you would have thought "what the hell is she talking about? Movable Type can't be that hard to develop."

And, if I had ignore the self-embargo I had placed on myself not to speak about work, I feared that not only I would have said too much but I would have also created a public record of my weaknesses -- something that I was sure would come to haunt me some day.

So I wrote the sort of posts that kept me in a pre-TypePad, pre-funding state of mind. What you see in my archives from the past few months represents almost all thoughts I've had that relate to my for-public-consumption life. The fact that I've forked has been incredibly difficult to reconcile in dollarshort.org and I'm so terribly happy that, with this announcement, I'm living an secret-free existence.

We write weblogging tools because we believe in the medium. At some point, the writer has to choose what they can and can not disclose in public. Some of this has to do with strategy and some of it has to do with legalities. Weblogging is amazing because you can read the thoughts of a newly-minted CEO and understand, with one post, what has been going through her mind for the past couple months.

That's a power that we can't take for granted.

Making life

Making life 04/28/2004 05:27 PM
The current issue of Scientific American features a mind-blowing article by W. Wayt Gibbs about "synthetic biology," the effort to create designer organisms from the bottom up:
"This nascent field has three major goals: One, learn about life by building it, rather than by tearing it apart. Two, make genetic engineering worthy of its name--a discipline that continuously improves by standardizing its previous creations and recombining them to make new and more sophisticated systems. And three, stretch the boundaries of life and of machines until the two overlap to yield truly programmable organisms. Already TNT-detecting and artemisinin-producing microbes seem within reach. The current prototypes are relatively primitive, but the vision is undeniably grand: think of it as Life, version 2.0."

Hollywood Zen: Still life on CBS lot

Hollywood Zen: Still life on CBS lot 07/23/2004 01:31 AM
I was working on the CBS lot in Studio City around sunset today. I had a digital camera with a few minutes and megabytes to kill, so I took some quickie snapshots of abandoned TV sets. Everything you see here is life-sized, but fake (not unlike my city). The trees are painted on drywall, the houses are 3 feet deep, even the ivy is two-dimensional. Vacant studio lots emit a strange kind of sorrow and character that's not there when they're full of humans. Like flat sketches that pop off the page when liberated from their daily human cargo. When the actors and crews go home, the lots wake up and live a moody, poignant, secret little dream life we humans don't know about. My city is full of promises and lies. Here, even the studio sets lie to you about being inanimate. Link

Matrix online game hires real actors to

Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Korean Online Game Market

Korean Online Game Market 06/26/2004 09:38 AM

Nice article at News.com on Korean online game market and how it's trying to expand into other countries.  This quote notes interesting differences between Korean and American culture:

Webzen's Kim said Asian game players, for example, like to beat each other up and try to kill each other's characters. But American players prefer the quest aspect of its games, so the company will amend its U.S. versions accordingly.

Sounds about right.  It's no wonder Lineage, a megahit in Korea, has unusually elaborate support for player-to-player wars.  Checkout Lineage 2 demo videos and you see amazing battle scenes not unlike the Lord of the Ring battles scenes.  Only differences is that it's players fighting players in large numbers.  Maybe the ever present DMZ makes young Koreans thirsty for battles.

Last Thursday, I got Freedom Fighters for PS2.  It's top rated and have been out for a while but I waited until the price dropped to more sane level.  More I get older, more budget conscious I seem to be getting.  I like to think I am setting a good example for my son.  I won't let him play this game though because it's too violent.  Heh.
