Johnson and FDR

Johnson and FDR 07/16/2004 08:19 AM

I'm taking an audio course in the Presidency in the 20th Century, produced by Barnes & Noble. The teacher goes through each of the people who held the office last century, starting with Teddy Roosevelt, skipping William Howard Taft (other than to say he was TR's hand-picked successor, and a man with no vision), going deep on Woodrow Wilson, skipping the three Republican presidents of the 1920's, then going deep on FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and I'm now learning about Johnson and Vietnam, from the historian's point of view.

FDR understood that he couldn't enter World War II until the public was ready. He did all kinds of half-steps, cash-and-carry, lend-lease, and sold it to them and they bought it because he was so cheerful and reassuring. Finally, after Pearl Harbor, the public was engaged, and wanted to get even. "A date which will live in infamy." He fed the frenzy, interring American citizens of Japanese descent, as a way to give the public a sense something was happening as he geared up for war. (History remembers this as a terrible thing, and it was, but the context is often omitted.)

While LBJ wasn't the first President to escalate in Vietnam, he was the one who decided to go to war. But when he did it, he never tested the public's support for the war, was warned that they wouldn't support it, ignored the warning, at the last minute he offered Ho Chi Minh a billion dollars, his own Great Society, was turned down, and the war began, quietly, with no announcement, no great speech. He used the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution as his cover. We won World War II, which was a much bigger war, covering much more territory, with a much better equipped enemy; Vietnam was a disaster. In other words, try as hard as you want to be right, but if you haven't convinced the people to fund the war with their wealth and the lives of their children, it ain't going to happen.

I'm thinking of course of the great commander-in-chief of the Semantic Web, Tim Berners-Lee. Like Johnson, he had a vision for a great society, the HTML web, but let it languish while he fought a no-way-to-win war in Semantic Web Land.

Steve Johnson on 9/11

Steve Johnson on 9/11 07/05/2004 05:56 PM
Steve Johnson has a terrific review of F9/11. It's about 3 stars short of a rave. Steve reduces the movie to a silly conspiracy theory and an unreeling of images that we need to see if we are to be morally accountable. I agree that the movie is both those things, but I think it's also more than that. Moore blurts out conspiracy theories with alarming frequency, and I agree with Steve that they generally don't stick. (I do want to read the book about the Bushes' relationships with the Saudis, though.) But I didn't read the intellectual content of...

Vacation, As It Was

Vacation, As It Was 12/29/2003 11:44 PM
Except for most of my twenties, I've vacationed annually in York Beach, Maine since birth, in a rented cottage within sight of Nubble Light, on Cape Neddick. All of my first cousins can say the same. We don't call it York, we call it Maine, as in "Are we in Maine yet?" Whoever first slapped "Vacationland" on that state's license plates certainly saw us coming, for "Maine" and "vacation" are plainly synonymous in my clan. No other...

Take a vacation from your car 08/02/2004 03:20 PM
Having just returned to Paradise for a little visit, I am reminded just how cool this little place is (not that I needed much reminding *whimper*), and am looking for touristy things to do here without a car. While I was on my way up on the Pacific Surfliner train, a fellow rider told me about Santa Barbara Car Free. Awesome! Also props to CalTrans' alliance with Amtrak in California. The trains and service and overall quality of the passenger rail system is quite a bit different from what I've experienced thus far of the stuff handled by Amtrak alone.

So much for my vacation.

Steve Johnson on books and bl0gs 03/25/2005 05:17 PM
Steve Johnson has a brilliant post on why he doesn't blog his books as he writes them: The problem for an author is that books are not written the way they are read. They usually take years to write, from original proposal to final proofs; they are rarely composed in sequence; and by the time you submit a final manuscript, you've invariably read every page dozens of times, mostly out context. So for me at least, the trick of writing a book is somehow shedding all the layered, time-shifted contortions of writing, and somehow recreating what it would feel like...

Ribbon Dancer robot

Ribbon Dancer robot 06/05/2005 11:47 PM

At Gel, Bruce Shapiro, artist in residence at the Science Museum of Minnesota, talked about his notion of "motion control" as an "emerging medium for artistic expression". As his website explains, motion control is a "term used to describe a variety of techniques for orchestrating the movement of machinery and objects".

One of the machines he brought to demonstrate its artistic expression was Ribbon Dancer. The willowy one-armed robot performed a routine for us for a couple minutes to a classical piece of music. Near the end of the piece, the ribbon got hung up on the lower part of the apparatus while the arm kept going with the routine, tugging obliviously on the caught fabric. The crowd gasped. For a second there, we thought the arm was going to pull the whole thing over -- not unlike the robot-like AT-AT that got tripped up by a Rebel harpoon on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back -- but Bruce stepped in to stop the machine and free the ribbon. Despite the mistake, the crowd's emotional reaction to the dancer's potentially hazardous misstep demonstrated the potential for the acceptance of artistic expression by machines.

(And in a somewhat more disturbing demonstration of the dancer's representation of life, when Bruce stopped it at the end of the routine and began to walk off the stage, it began to twitch awkwardly from some stray electrical signals, a death rattle of sorts. Bruce leapt back on stage and pulled the plug; the twitching abruptly stopped and the arm fell slack atop the metal shaft, like he'd killed it.)

Innocent Love of a Dancer

Innocent Love of a Dancer 04/15/2005 04:40 AM

Dancer of Sunjung (sungung means innocent love in Korean) is a Korean movie currently in production which I am looking very forward to.  It's a story about a young dancer from Yanbian competing in a Korean ballroom dance contest and finding love.  I hope it's as enjoyable as the original version of Shall We Dance was.

Goonyoung Moon, the young leading actress with a thousand cute faces, is one of my favorite Korean actresses.  Here is one of the thousand that makes me laugh everytime I see it.

Yanbian, fyi,&n bsp;is a Chinese prefecture bordering Russia and North Korea which is heavily populated (~40%) by descendents of Korean origin called Chosun-jok.  Enough Koreans have lived there for long enough to even have evolved their own accent which is faithfully reproduced in the movie.

I would love to learn ballroom dancing but I've had only about 5 ballroom dancing lessons over the past 20 years because I just don't enjoy the way ballroom dancing is taught traditionally: too much focus on steps and not enough on how to weave them together into a dance.

As it is now, it's as bewildering as learning to program in assembly language although I've been known to spin girls confidently (and unfortunately uncontrollably) on the dance floor given enough drinks under the belt.

Nude phonecam pix put cops in a fix 03/31/2005 03:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: A police officer is accused of downloading naked photos of a suspect from her own cell phone after a DWI arrest, according to a report. The officer has been "reassigned" pending the outcome of an internal investigation, as has his partner on the force -- while the department looks into reports that he phoned the suspect's home to ask her out on a date.

Snip from a Houston Chronicle story, via Declan McCullagh's politech:

During the arrest, they discovered that the woman had stored sexually explicit photos of herself in her cell phone, and Green downloaded the images onto his personal digital assistant, according to the search request.
Here's a PDF of the warrant to search the officer's PDA: Link. Politech reader Scott H. says:
[This] sure seems beyond the pale of unreasonable search and seizure (small pun). Hypothetically, what if the phone had a picture of the woman in question standing over a dead person in back of her home? Is this a warrantless search and if they find the body in her home is this fruit from a poisoned tree? Do the police have a right to search through all the "data" a person has in thier possession at the time of arrest? What about a USB flash drive? Encrypt, encrypt, encrypt.
Link< /a> to EWeek story, and Declan recommends FileVault and PGPdisk as handy encryption utilities. Here are more.

Update: Looks like my blog-mate Mark Frauenfelder covered this item over at The Feature -- Link.
