Bid for your next apartment?

Bid for your next apartment? 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
Get your next apartment through eBay? Well, if the idea of fighting for a cool new pad is not your bag, not to worry. Apparently eBay’s circle of influence has inspired Rent.com to take their approach to apartment rentals. Personally, I am not too sure about this. It should prove interesting though….

The Apartment Phone (No, The Actual
Building)

The Apartment Phone (No, The Actual
Building)
07/09/2004 05:12 AM
Well, if this isn't a Friday "Too Much Free Time" story, I'm not sure what is. An eccentric Australian millionaire nicknamed "Crazy John" for a popular chain of mobile phone retail shops (Crazy Eddie should sue -- though after his problems with the law, he may not want to go anywhere near a court room) now wants to use some of his millions to build an apartment building in the shape of a mobile phone -- complete with number buttons, "end" and "send" buttons, and a "rooftop" antenna. He hasn't chosen what phone the building will look like, but is hoping that a handset maker will pop up and sponsor the project in return for the landmark advertising. Of course, at the rate handset designs go out of style, this certainly could be risky. Who would really want to live in an obsolete mobile phone shaped building? Also, what would happen if the eventual sponsor wanted it in the shape of a clamshell flip phone?

Worth reading. A NY Times writer threatens to sic the paper's legal dogs on the Apartment Therapy blogger.
Yesterday the phone rang towards the end of the day and when we picked it up the voice on the other side of the line said, "This is Marianne Rohrlich." It was like getting a call from Elvis. Marianne Rohrlich?! Who we have been reading obsessively and PROMOTING obsessively for the best home section coverage IN THE COUNTRY? She is, however, not happy with us. "Did it occur to you that it is not right to just LIFT other people's work?" she asks me. ("Do you know what blogging is?" I want to ask.) "Our legal department is going to be calling you."

Why TV Providers Are Tying Up Condo And
Apartment Complexes

Why TV Providers Are Tying Up Condo And
Apartment Complexes
03/31/2005 03:11 AM
Earlier this month, we had a story about how cable providers were having a blast signi ng deals with new condo and apartment complexes which would force all residents to buy TV and broadband services from them -- even if they didn't use it or if they signed a deal with another provider. The NY Times has now written basically the same story, but has a little more analysis about why these sorts of deals have become so popular lately. The basic idea is that the market for pay-TV is saturated. Everyone who wants it, has it. So, rather than focus on creating better deals for customers (better prices, better services, etc...), the companies are looking for ways to force people to subscribe to their services. Apparently, they have no faith in their own ability to sell the service competitively.

Apartment Building Offers Free But Not
Permitted Wi-Fi to Residents

Apartment Building Offers Free But Not
Permitted Wi-Fi to Residents
05/19/2004 01:26 PM
An apartment resident worked with his landlord to build out good Wi-Fi coverage for free Internet access--but did he read the Comcast contract?: The page documents how "JC" worked with his landlord to build out ubiquitous coverage for the complex, incidentally benefitting himself by eliminating his personal monthly broadband bill. But he notes they're paying $60 per month to Comcast for their Internet feed, and at that rate, Comcast isn't offering shared Internet access in this fashion. Comcast clearly only allows use by people in the same household, and used to charge extra per machine and try to restrict sharing by locking down use to a single Ethernet adapter address. Given the promotion that JC's story has gotten, how long is it before either Comcast shuts them down or Speakeasy Networks steps in and offers free access in exchange for promotion? Speakeasy remains the only ISP that I'm aware of that encourages the shared use of personal or business DSL and T1 connections at all prices. [link via BoingBoing and Nigel Ballard]...

Working Hard, Hardly Working

Working Hard, Hardly Working 06/15/2004 10:07 AM
Three years ago, I was working at a small company as the unofficial IT director / all-purpose computer bitch. I was laid off in early 2003, but to this day, the job presents me with difficulties; namely, that of telling prospective employers what I did, and for that matter, what the company itself did. I have virtually no idea what this company's function was, despite working there for over a year and a half, although I did learn how to spew an amazing amount of marketing jargon without thinking. As for my role there, it was essentially vast tracts of doing absolutely nothing, punctuated erratically by moments of panicking and crisis-defusion, usually involving something truly earth-shattering like the CEO not being able to print her email. When asked by interviewers "What did your company do?" I am forced to mumble vaguaries about consulting and hope they leave the issue alone.
