Pinched (ouch) nerve

Pinched (ouch) nerve

Pinched (ouch) nerve 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

Thanks to a pinched nerve, my left arm feels like someone keeps sticking a red hot poker through it, so right now typing is about as much fun as major dental work. If I'm a little slower to reply to support questions than usual, please understand that it's nothing personal :)

Pinched nerve update

Pinched nerve update 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

Just wanted to let everyone know that the pinch ed nerve in my neck is slowly getting better, but it continues to make it very hard for me to type for any length of time. As a result, I'm way behind on my email, and there are a number of messages in my newsgroups that remain unanswered.

Unfortunately, given that I leave for SXSW tomorrow morning, it will probably be late next week before I'll be able to catch up with everything, so please be patient if you're waiting for a reply from me. Thanks :)

Ouch. Looks like I need surgery. 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

This morning I had separate visits with a physiatrist and a neorosurgeon, and both are recommending that I undergo surgery as soon as possible. Apparently, my cervi cal disk herniation is worse than I thought, and the pinched nerve is causing muscle atrophy and weakness in my arm. Left unchecked, it could result in permanent damage.

I'm still researching my options, but I'm fairly certain that surgery is in my future, possibly as early as next week. Man, it's hard to believe that a few weeks ago I was enjoying running 8-10 miles at a time, and now I'm flat on my back looking at surgery.

Google Censorship, Ouch 06/23/2004 01:25 AM
From Perrspectives, a fairly ordinary U.S. left-liberal political site (but with an above-average sense of humor), a shocki ng story of being cut off by Google AdWords for “language that advocates against an individual, group, or organization.” Earth to Google: that country you’re based in is going through a war and an election! A substantial part of the population is (quite properly) advocating like crazy against one political faction or another as a result of one or the other. The Perrspectives folks point out that the policy, on top of being, uh, wrong, is also broken, in fact lots of people are using Google AdWords for political rhetoric and polemic; the appearance is either of political bias or of incompetence. I’m not sure whether I’m saying Don’t be evil or Don’t be stupid but whichever, please don’t.

Nerve.com's "Future of Marriage" survey 06/07/2004 11:37 PM
Tomorrow, "Literate Smut" online magazine Nerve launches a two-week "Future of Marriage" special issue. Included: the results of a "future of marriage poll" which canvassed 2082 readers for some interesting trend data and pithy quotes ("A good marriage needs blow jobs."... "Have failed at it three times, but I am in love once again, so I still have hope." ... "Would rather not die alone.")
New trends among our readers (primarily educated urban men and women in their twenties and thirties): 32%, for example, think cheating begins with a raunchy IM session. Fidelity is a priority for them (close to 80% are pro-monogamy), but they're laissez-faire about the lifestyles of others (97% think having children out of wedlock is okay). There's just one thing on which they refuse to compromise: 59% think bad sex is grounds for divorce.

New Cochlear Implants Encourage Nerve

New Cochlear Implants Encourage Nerve
Growth
04/14/2005 01:25 PM

howard_cochlear_1_.jpgIn a move sure to encourage youth everywhere to keep their amps cranked up... to eleven, scientists working on a cochlear implant have developed a device that can actually help "reverse the death and degeneration of hearing cells that occurs after prolonged deafness." A small electric current releases specialized molecules that stimulate the nerve regrowth. Professor Gordon Wallace tells Australian ABC:

We inject small amounts of electricity into the structure and that causes the release of the molecules and makes them available to the nerve cells.

The polymer controls the timing of release, and where the molecules are released, to maximise interaction with nerve cells.

The implications in assisting people with severe hearing loss and nerve damage are obviously staggering, but even more importantly, the technology isn't limited to hearing cells and nerves—they mention spinal cord repair as well. Check the ABC article for more details.

First, a photo gallery with holiday-themed contributions from some of the online zine's regular contributors -- including a terrific X-rated cupcake shot from Siege (cropped thumbnail at left), whose work has been blogged here on BoingBoing before. The gallery is thankfully devoid of naughty Santas because, according to photo editor Whitney Lawson, the "treacly tradition... fall[s] into the same category as spiced rum and Kenny G's holiday album." Link (sorry, but paid registration or someone else's password required).

Next up, the latest experiment in Nerve regular Grant Stoddard's "I Did It for Science" series: "To attend a porn star's Christmas party." The party was an orgy in LA (yes, an actual orgy), hosted by a well-known adult entertainment biz couple. My dear BoingBoing readers, let it be known that I refuse to be outdone in the realm of party invites. I, too, received an Evite to this very same Christmas clusterfuck. I did not attend, but I can tell you (swear on a stack of mid '90s Wired Magazines) that said invitation included a very thorough FAQ with the line, "Q: Can I bang [female co-host's name]? -- A: Sure!" Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar
02/18/2004 01:19 PM
Growing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age. Gibson is getting ready to start selling a digital version of the guitar. It looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock our guitars.

Electrical Twitch Obtaining
Intramuscular Stimulation (ETOIMS) for
Relief of Muscle Pain and Discomfort
09/02/2004 02:09 AM
Electrical Twitch Obtaining Intramuscular Stimulation (ETOIMS) method is beneficial for patients with various nerve related muscle discomfort conditions such as fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, muscle tightness, aches and soreness. ETOIMS works by automated rapid insertion of a thin needle electrode into specific muscle-nerve junctions at different depths within the muscle. A small amount of electricity applied for 0.5 second, facilitates these areas to "twitch". The stretch and exercise effects of the twitch mobilizes and loosen deep muscle tissue. This is essential to relieve acute and chronic muscle pain and discomfort. [PRWEB Sep 2, 2004]

Hello Kitty Guitar

Hello Kitty Guitar 09/01/2004 09:36 AM

Although this Hello Kitty guitar is about four times the price of what I'd actually want to pay for it... hey, Hello Kitty guitar! The Fernandez-made electric has a built-in speaker and amplifier so you can plug a headphone right in and start writing your ode to ultimate adorability. And while the polka dot version is shown here, there is apparently a matching sparkly pink version the guy selling these can get a hold of. Now we're talking something worth $400.

What acolyte of rock wouldn't be proud to walk through a smokey club with a matching pink gig bag? None I would prefer to rock to, that's for sure.

JamPlug Guitar Amp

JamPlug Guitar Amp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

7jamplug.jpg imageDVForge's new JamPlug, an in-line (well, I guess most audio equipment is inline, but bear with me) amplifier that is billing itself as the "World's Smallest Guitar Amp," and for once a world's-smallest claim is probably on the money. The $60 piece runs on a single AAA battery and has a pair of strangely-familiar matching white headphones. The thumb wheel controls volume, and it even can be overdriven into some quality of distortion, which probably isn't the best sounding fuzz or crunch or whatever in the world, but if it can free the legion of pimply guitar noodlers from the curse that is the Rockman Metal Ace, then the amateur rock world will surely be a better place.

Won't ship until October, but you can get on the list now to be notified.

The Fretlight happens to be a MIDI guitar, too, so you can send signals to it from standard music applications, or even other instruments. That means your instructor could play a short riff, which would light up on your guitar. And with quoted prices around $600 or so, it's relatively affordable (compared to other MIDI guitars, at least).
