Still kicking, but not working

Still kicking, but not working

Still kicking, but not working 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

Sorry it's been so long since my last post, but I've been working hard at not working. For those that would like an update on my injury, a recent MRI shows that I have a herniated cervical disk which is pressing on a nerve root (English translation: it freaking hurts!). Early next week I visit a specialist who will either provide a steroid injection or, depending on the severity of the problem, recommend surgery.

In the past I've always loved the fact that I'm a "one man company," but I'm now seeing the obvious downside - there's no one to take up the slack when something like this happens. Typing for any length of time is next to impossible, so my inbox continues to overflow with email that would be easy for someone else to answer. Once I'm back to work again, I may look into hiring someone to help out.

As an aside, I'm bummed that this injury is preventing me from running the half marathon I've been training for since December. The last time I attempted a marathon I got sidelined by a running injury, so to be stopped this time by something completely unrelated to running is maddening. Maybe next year :)

Ass-kicking Computer Nerds

Ass-kicking Computer Nerds 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

Computer nerds are stereotyped by the public as a bunch of meek cubicle-dwellers who sit quietly staring at screens, taking orders from MBAs 6 levels up in a bureaucracy, until their jobs get outsourced to some villagers in India.  Though we might regret the U.S. government's decision to grant citizenship to people who hate Americans we can be grateful to Maher Mofeid Hawash, the Intel programmer sentenced today for his efforts on behalf of Al-Qaeda (Mr. Hawash was attempting to enter Afghanistan in 2001 and fight directly against American troops... imagine Rambo with a copy of K&R).  Mr. Hawash picks up the struggle to reform the public image of computer nerds taken up by Sami Al-Arian, the University of South Florida computer engineering professor who was, in addition to a naturalized American citizen and member of the American Muslim Council, a leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

A few more guys like this and Hollywood will start making films about action heroes with day jobs coding Java.

Kicking off the camping season

Kicking off the camping season 06/05/2005 10:49 PM

This weekend is the start of our camping season this year. This year, the first camping trip will be at the Pfiffer Big Sur State Park. We've been that five times or so but I have no problem with repeating a good thing. My wife, on the other hand, wants to try new camps. Sheesh.

My only worry is that my cigarette craving might get real bad during the trip. Last time I quit smoking for longer than a week, I stayed away for 6 months but I started smoking again while camping at Clear Lake. Oh boy, it was bad. I chewed through a full box of nicotine gum before throwing the towel in. I hope I fare better this time.

Video Without Boundries' MediaREADY 4000
Still Kicking
07/30/2004 07:07 AM

mr_4000single_unit.jpg imageThreebase is reporting that Video Without Boundries is still planning on releasing the MediaREADY 4000, a set-top media hub and networked DVD player with a variety of flash memory card slots, a built-in hard drive, and Ethernet (but no wireless?) It certainly looks full-featured enough, with FireWire and USB slots right up front (and hopefully on the back, as well), but when it ships Real Soon Now for $450 we'll be able to see what sort of boundryless video experience they actually intend on providing.

No mention of the VIA co-branding this time around, although Threebase's Noah Kravitz does mention VWB's plans to "license their technologies along the lines of a tiered, scaleable solution marketable to consumers and telcom providers alike."

Wild west themeparks kicking ass in

Steve sez, "It's not quite a fetish but clearly 'wild west' life is big and serious in parts of German and Czech life..."
Main Street features covered plank sidewalks, double-decker railings and cutout clapboard facades. Outside the sheriff's office, the town marshal, Big Joe - a Turkish-born character actor little more than three feet tall - obligingly poses for photos, pointing his six-gun at guests and ordering "Hände hoch!" ("Hands up!")...Pullman City, in fact, is one of more than a dozen Wild West theme parks and similar attractions in Europe, from Spain to Scandinavia. I visited several others, including two parks in the Czech Republic and one near Vienna.

They all form part of a multifaceted Wild West subculture in Europe that includes everything from country music festivals and cowboy saloons to an established rodeo circuit. Tens of thousands of Europeans study (or even live like) trappers, American Indians or other frontier archetypes as a hobby. They join clubs, dress up in elaborate costumes and often take to the woods on weekends to live in tepees or sleep "cowboy style" under the stars. "People dream of a free, beautiful country, of romantic campfires and heroes in the saddle," said Detlef Jeschke, a Nuremberg-born former champion European rodeo cowboy who is Pullman City's program manager.

So runs the headline on a current U.S. Navy recruiting ad. This may sum up current U.S. military philosophy pretty neatly, whatever the branch of service. No one from the Pentagon knows , or seems particularly interested in finding out, how many civilians we have killed in Iraq so far. I would guess it exceeds many times over the number who died here on September 11. One of the liabilities of conducting a military operation that is so heavily based on "death from above" is that, even with our surgical new targeting abilities, we are dangerously abstracted from the consequences below. I was put in mind of this today by this morning's Drudge Report, which contains an item about a video clip which a BarlowFriend with military connections sent me back at the end of January. I found it disturbing then and I continue to. I thought about posting it to this blog at the time, but it felt so much like war pornography that I was afraid I might be pandering. I still harbor scruples, but since this clip has just been broadcast on French television, the moral implications of "publishing" it seem less burdensome. Therefore, you will find it here. My friend described the clip as follows: "This is actual night-vision footage shot from a U.S. Apache attack helicopter engaging Iraqis, who allegedly were attempting to launch a Stinger missile at the Apache. The Apache responds with approximately one-hundred rounds of 30mm cannon fire, which is, ironically, the least powerful weapons system onboard the helicopter. The footage has been "dumbed down" to VHS resolution before conversion to MPEG, since the actual night-vision system on the Apache provides a much sharper and more detailed image." The clip speaks for itself. The three Iraqis are vaporized without much of what might be called due process. Perhaps they actually were preparing to attack the Apache, but they seem far too languid to have thought themselves in combat, particularly against something as lethal as an Apache less than a hundred feet away. Had I been in their situation, I would have been far more eager to launch and split. I can hear some of you snorting at my squeamishness. This is war, Buddy. Suck it up. But war has rules. Those who abide by them don't shoot the wounded, as we do in the clip. It's simply wrong. It's also impractical. These three Iraqis almost certainly have family members who are now bound by inarguable duty to avenge their deaths. In this video you can see us planting the seeds of terrorist retributions that will bloom for years....

Kicking it up a notch: Microsoft's open
source message gains subtlety
04/07/2005 05:06 AM
VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Barnaby Jeans, an IT Pro Advisor at Microsoft Canada, has a new approach to Microsoft advocacy. In the past, Microsoft executives have been reported as describing GNU/Linux as a cancer or communism. Other reports include warnings that corporate users risk being sued, and that the "Pac-Man-like nature" of its licenses may make interoperability between applications harder. The Get the Facts Web site continues these direct attacks, although with greater detail. However, Jeans has a subtler message for corporate customers. In fact, his message is less in what he says than how he says it.
