CNet Acquires EDventure

CNet Acquires EDventure

CNet Acquires EDventure 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

My old boss, Esther Dyson, just announced that she is selling her company to CNet.  Reportedly, she and her business partner Daphne Kis will stay involved.  Even for someone as prominent as Esther, it's tough to make it as an independent publisher.  I hope the merger works out well for everyone.  If nothing else, it will be a good topic for conversation at PC Forum, which starts on Sunday.

CNet and E3

CNet and E3 05/14/2004 01:49 PM

The Ziff booth were I stood for two days was kitty cat corner from the CNet/Gamespot booth - which is our biggest competitor.

Then along comes Shelby Bonnie - the CEO of CNet - who I've known for 12 years.  Adam Curry and I did the pilot for CNet - way back when (thank to Fred Davis) and we reminisced on old times.

But I knew why Shelby was there. He wanted to figure out what 1UP.com had - that Gamespot doesn't!

We also talked about MP3.com and.... well let's just say..... Shelby's a great guy, but......

I ran into lots of other old buddies at E3 too.  Stewart Alsop, Dick Lehrberg, Tim Mott.....

The joys of E3. Booth babes, goofy input devices and competitive ballroom dancing games compete for attention at the trade show. The booth babes win. [CNET News.com]

CNet to FCC: Die Die Die!

CNet to FCC: Die Die Die! 06/07/2004 12:09 PM

lg_mccullagh_d2.jpg imageIs that a pair of balls I'm sniffing over at CNet? News.com(.com)'s Chief political correspondent Declan McCullagh makes no bones about his hope for the future of the FCC: time to fucking die. He uses all those pesky facts and logic that isn't really my forté, but the essence is that the FCC has far outlived any supposed regulatory usefulness it had in the first place while continually overstepping its bailiwick to apply its foot-dragging moral judgements to everything from wiretapping, to broadcast TV, to fair use rights of Americans to enjoy their culture how they see fit.

Bye, CNet

Bye, CNet 06/03/2004 10:08 PM
CNet (“News.com”) has recently switched to headline-only feeds. I certainly don’t require (and don’t provide) full-content feeds, but the headlines just don’t tell me enough to make a decision whether or not to visit. So I unsubscribed. It’s a pity, because they are a good news source. Maybe I’m just looking in the wrong place?

CNET Buys MP3.com

CNET Buys MP3.com 11/14/2003 04:41 AM
Back in July we mentioned that Vivendi Universal was despa rately looking to sell of MP3.com (among other assets). Now, according to GnutellaNews, CNET has bought certain assets of MP3.com. This is a bit of a surprise, but could be a good thing. It's a bit outside of CNET's typical business lines, but not completely out of left field. Also, CNET has a history of not being evil about most of these things (they've never done pop-ups, and they don't lock up content or change URLs - and their reporting has always been some of the best in the tech world). However, it looks like CNET will be starting from scratch on this one, as the notice to subscribers says that MP3.com's servers will be wiped out, suggesting CNET just bought the domain (and possibly the subscriber list).

Confused CNET Article

Confused CNET Article 12/11/2003 02:32 PM
This article is theoretically about combo Wi-Fi chips but really is filled with a bunch of misguided jargon: For instance, the writer comments that VCs have soured on putting money into Wi-Fi startups. I suppose it's all relative but I continue to see investors put money into Wi-Fi startups. In fact, some investors worry that too much money is flowing into the sector. He also refers to the "growing multiplicity of wireless frequencies." Huh? The 5 GHz band just got an additional 255 MHz, but it's part of the overall U-NII band, which 802.11a and some proprietary and new standards use, including 802.16a....

CNET gives five reasons why not to buy
an iPod
11/07/2003 11:09 AM
Deliberately courting the ire of Apple lovers everywhere, Eliot Van Buskirk of CNET gives five reasons why not to buy an iPod: its battery life is too short, you can't/shouldn't jog with it, it's expensive, you can't use it to make high-quality recordings, and it doesn't work with any of the other online music stores besides iTunes. All true, but it says a lot about the excellence of the iPod's design that it has been able to make people overlook its shortcomings. Read...
