Treo all better!

Treo all better! 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

As suddenly as it appeared, my Treo problems have suddenly stopped.  I brought it into my office this morning, and when I took it out to call the replacement service, it was working fine.  I'll keep my fingers crossed that whatever happened has corrected itself

Well, it was a close call between the PalmOne Treo 600 and the Sony Ericsson P900, but I've gone with the Treo. The P900 has a much better Web browser, a better camera, better multitasking and in many ways a better user interface. But the Treo has a thumb-keyboard, which for me is essential, and zillions of Palm OS applications that run nicely and enhance the device.

Video to Go on the Treo 600?? 01/07/2004 04:53 PM

USER THOUGHT: Watching a TV program on a Palm device is fun.

"Watching a TV program on a Palm device is fun! I record a program up to 1 hour long on my Mac using EyeTV, I edit out the commercials with the same program. I then use Kinoma producer to convert the MPEG file to a .PDB file, and finally I transfer the file to a 256MB SD card using a card reader. The show can be viewed entirely with Kinoma player. This is great when I’m on the go, and want to see a show – or show someone else a show - while away from a TV. For me, this is the next best thing until an SD card/TV tuner is made. :-) " [Daily Palm]

Oh, suh-weet! I hadn't even thought of this! I could take shows I've recorded on my ReplayTV, download them to my PC, convert them to MPEG and then PDB, and watch them on my Treo 600! Is there anything this puppy can't do?? And the screen on it is bigger than the one on my Archos Jukebox, while negating the need to mess with multiple programs and formats just to get the video onto the device!

I feel a test case coming on this weekend....

Treo 600 Review

Treo 600 Review 01/05/2004 01:08 AM

I've finally gotten around to posting about my experiences with the Treo 600 in an essay called Life in the Treo Lane. The great thing about this device is that it confirms most of what I've been writing about for the last two years. I am truly shifted now!

Of course, this has brought home to me even more how woefully lacking library services are in a shifted environment, and I'll be doing a second write-up of how they look on the Treo. In fact, I'm thinking of submitting it as a presentation at the ILA Conference this fall because too few librarians have actually seen how their services look on a smartphone, and this is one way I could show them, even taking URLs from the audience. See, I could do that at ILA because I wouldn't have to rely on the conference center for internet access! (Assuming I can get a strong enough signal in the conference room....)

I've also updated the list of What's on My Treo 600, and I'm pretty close to maxxing out the memory on it, both internal and external. Hopefully I'll get a 256MB SD card for my birthday....  ;-)

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600?

RealPlayer Comes to the Treo 600? 01/08/2004 07:20 PM

There were lots of big announcements today but as far as I'm concerned, the biggest is Real's new software plus music store. Not for the music store itself, because after I download the first song for $.10 I don't envision locking my music up in AAC + Helix encrypted files, but because RealPlayer 10 brings with it a new Palm component. The line that specifically caught my eye is "support for over 50 portable music devices, including the iPOD and the Handspring Treo 600."

Naturally my fingers tripped over themselves to get to the Real site and download the software to my T600, but I couldn't find a download link for it anywhere. The key turns out to be this little phrase: "For the next 10 days, U.S. consumers who download RealPlayer 10 will be able to purchase their first track for only $0.10. Consumers can transfer tracks purchased in the RealPlayer Music Store to the Creative Zen Xtra as well as seven models of PalmOne devices, including most of the Tungsten models, the Zire 71, and the Treo 600."

I didn't realize I had to actually download the main player and create an account at the music store just to get the Palm piece that I want, but of course Real is going to make this as difficult as possible (I don't use Real anymore because it's become more and more annoying with each iteration). PDA 24/7 spelled it out in the following post:

"Email from Galley- 'As I write this, I am listening to Night Ranger's 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me' on my Zire 71. It is a 192Kbps DRM-enabled AAC file! RealPlayer 10 was released today, and it features a music store. Tracks are 99 cents, or $9.95 per album. All files are RealAudio 10 (192Kbps AAC), so the sound quality is very good. Persons who have signed up for a Music Store account can get version 1.5 of RealPlayer for PalmOS.' "

So despite my dislike for the software, I've been anxiously awaiting a new version of RealPlayer that would work with the T600 because I really, really, really want to be able to access Live365 streams. Even better, I'd like to finally be able to access Rhapsody on it, and I'm guessing this is the first step to making that a reality.

By the time I realized what I needed to do, I was home reading my aggregator for the night. Every day I carry my sync cable to work and back in order to keep my data and programs up-to-date at both home and work (yes, I need to buy a second charger/sync cable, but they all seem to be sold out). Naturally, I forgot my sync cable at work tonight, so I can't test this and install the Palm program. Argh - my kingdom for a sync cable!!

So until I have a chance to go through all of this myself, has anyone else installed the new RealPlayer 10 on a Treo 600? Can you do more than just listen to purchased Real music files in it? Can you hear live streams from other web sites? Enquiring minds want to know!

Treo Ace: Please Be Legit

Treo Ace: Please Be Legit 06/25/2004 10:32 AM

treo_ace.jpg imageSo I've been waiting to get some additional confirmation, but as nothing else is panning out, there's no need to hold back the news. TreoCentral has a boatload of information about a very-legit looking Treo 610, which they are calling the "Treo Ace." The short list is very appealing: slightly smaller form factor, 320 by 320 screen, working Bluetooth, context-sensitive "soft buttons," more phone-like red/end, green/send buttons, a 312MHz processor, and a 1.3-megapixel camera, all running on top of Palm OS 5.4 (Garnet). Which is to say, yes, we are aroused in a humorous but unoffensive to sensitive readers way. Making it sound even more legitimate is the mention that the new Treo will have only 32MB of RAM, an egregious shortcoming that most tricksters would be too hesitant to pepper their fake with, even if it does season it with some needful reality. Anyway, hot.

Here's a little blurp: Cingular's rebate form for the Treo 600 has a check box for the Treo 650 even though it expires January 31st. If that doesn't mean it's going to be out that month, they mean it's going to be out real soon now.

I'm a fan of both the Sidekick and the Treo 600, so when Levi Wallach wrote to tell me about his in-depth comparison article featuring the two keyboarded messenger devices, I immediately did what any sane person would do and read it and then forgot to post about it. Fortunately for you, that was only like last week, and the information is no less pertinent. In fact, with the Sidekick II and the Treo Ace/610 just around the corner, bargain-minded shoppers would do well to pay extra attention to the two devices that are still plenty capable and about to get plenty cheap.

Why the Nokia 6600 Might Be Better Than
a Treo
12/19/2004 03:01 PM

nokia_6600slate.jpg imagePaul Boutin has a nice write up of the Nokia 6600 over at Slate, putting that relatively staid phone up against the Treo 650 and explaining why the generally less-impressive Nokia might be a better choice for many. It all boils down to the beauty of Series 60, to me. Nokia may be a heartless ice queen running down freedom on her iron, lawyer-pulled sleigh, but she makes an amazingly polished operating system for phones. It's not as PC-like as Palm or Windows Mobile, but it puts the phone functions first, instead of hidden behind layers of intelligent abstraction. That's worth a lot—especially when the phones are essentially free.

Plus there's still plenty of whiz-bang to be had from a Series 60 phone. People still marvel that I can get to a terminal on a Nokia 3650 and that phone is like two years old. (Thanks, John!)

IE6 SP1 Small Image Loading Bug

IE6 SP1 Small Image Loading Bug 01/07/2004 04:37 PM

Ever since I installed IE6 SP1, I started seeing web pages with missing images.  Usually missing images were small in size but used multiple times in a page like the XML icon you see in my blogroll.  Well, I am seeing it now somewhat consistently after changing blog software.  I used to see it with permalink icon and day icon which is why I removed them yesterday.  Looks like I'll have to replace the XML icon with text.  Urgh.

Update:

I replaced the XML feed icon with CSS-based text anchor as Richard Soderberg suggested.  I did reduced the font size to 6px and adjusted the border colors because larger version was causing too much distraction.  It's still distracting but this will do until I replace the blogroll with something that takes up less space.  Thanks Richard.

If you use really old hardware with an old bios with early generation x86 serial console redirection, it might be sufficiently broken to not allow grub to take over the serial console with linux starts booting. The result? grub hangs with the "stage2 loading" message ... Solution: Disable the bios console redirection; it probably sucks anyway. The only case I can think of where you would want it would be if you net boot with PXE and need to configure...

FastMac has announced a G4 processor upgrade for Apple’s slot-loading iMac G3 computers. The upgrade replaces the original G3 CPU with a G4 CPU operating at 550 MHz and doubles the backside cache from 512k to 1 full MB, resulting in a 3 to 4 times boost in speed & performance. After the upgrade, the machine will be able to run programs it could not run before, including GarageBand, iChat AV with iSight, and others. The upgrade is 100% compatible with OS 9 and X, and is warranted for one year.

The <a href="http://fastmac.com/products/processors/tl_imac.php" target="_blank">iMac Tray-Load G4/466MHz upgrade</a> from <a href="http://fastmac.com" target="_blank">FastMac</a> has a Motorola 450MHz G4 7400 processor running at 466MHz, an upgraded 1 MB backside cache, an AltiVec Velocity Engine and a 1 year limited (defect and workmanship) warranty. Though only beginning to sell its products under the FastMac name to consumers in 2003, the company has been creating and selling upgrade products for Macintosh computers since 1998. The upgraded machine was a Grape 333 MHz iMac with a recently upgraded 80 GB hard drive. Installing the FastMac processor upgrade is fairly straight-forward when following FastMac's provided instructions. After removing the cables it is advised that the computer be left for five minutes in order for the components to cool. Following the five minute wait, the next step was to remove the screws at the top of the logic board/mass storage chassis. That step was followed by disconnecting the audio, RGB, main power and IrDA cables, then removing the logic board/mass storage chassis. Later the processor card top shield was removed, then the heat sink clip and heat sink. The processor card was then removed from the logic board connectors by using the heatsink clip. An important piece of information to note when replacing the processor card is that it is important to firmly seat the processor in the logic board connectors, as the connectors are not located in the center of the board, pressure has to be applied in just the right spot for proper installation. If the processor card is not seated correctly (as I found out after putting all of the parts back together), the iMac will not boot. After the processor removal, the RAM was then transferred from the old card onto the new FastMac card, then the process was reversed. {_pic} The FastMac upgrade performed extremely well. After the processor upgrade, overall performance increased, with speeds nearly doubling that of the original processor. Booting Classic from OS X was about twice as fast, as well as ripping a song from CD, and exporting using Photoshop. Screen redraws were also faster and scrolling was quicker. The $199.95 upgrade might not be worth the price if there are any features offered in a new iMac or eMac that might catch your attention. To sell the old machine (for around $300) and then adding that amount to the money saved for <i>not</i> buying the processor upgrade ($199), would leave the purchaser with only spending an additional $300 to get a new <a href="http://www.apple.com/emac" target="_blank">1.25 GHz eMac</a>; a machine that is significantly better than the old iMac. eMac's offer the same all in one design of the 333 iMac but a new eMac would give an extra 2" of flat-CRT display area, a better resolution, faster processor, a combo drive, FireWire ports and a larger hard drive. Though the FastMac upgrade is an "incredible boost of speed and power, allowing you to enjoy the next generation of Macintosh products without burning a hole in your wallet," a small wallet hole might not be that bad if looking for a significantly better machine. For consumers who may not have the extra cash to spend on a new machine, the FastMac upgrade is a cost-effective way to upgrade a machine and is recommend if more processing power is needed.
