Public Knowledge party 04/09/2004 04:03 PM

Public Knowledge, a public interest organization that works on intellectual property and related issues, is holding a party/fund-raiser in San Francisco on April 21.  I strongly support the work Public Knowledge is doing to create reasonable solutions to thorny issues around digital content.  If you're in the Bay Area, I encourage you to attend the event.

Chicago's public sculpture can't be

Chicago's public sculpture can't be
photographed by the public
02/07/2005 02:07 AM
Cory Doctorow: Chicago spent $270 million on its Millennium Park, placing a big public sculpture by Anish Kapoor in the middle of it, bought with public money. Woe betide any member of the public who tries to photograph this sculpture, though: it's a copyrighted sculpture and Chicago is spending even more money policing Chicagoans who try to photograph it and make a record of what their tax-dollars bought.

If I were them, I'd ask for my money back. What kind of jerk sculptor sells the city a piece of public art for a public park and then demands that no one take pictures of it? Christ, they should run this guy out of town on a rail and melt the goddamned sculpture down for scrap. Then they should fire the politician who signed a purchase contract that reserved the photographic rights and run him out of town on the same rail. Between the artist's greed and the procurement officer's malfeasance, this is about the vilest display of human venality I've heard of all day.

The copyrights for the enhancements in Millennium Park are owned by the artist who created them. As such, anyone reproducing the works, especially for commercial purposes, needs the permission of that artist.

Democratic Party party

Democratic Party party 04/27/2004 11:36 AM
Quite an action-packed day yesterday. I did two keynotes, at two separate events. After the second one, I went back to the first event, a gathering of about 125 people who run libraries and museums, because I'm trying to write some stuff about metadata and taxonomies. I learned, for example, that one well-known art museum has had to create over 300 new Dewey Decimal categories for illustrated manuscripts ... and one for astrology. Afterwards, I went to a cocktail party put on by the hosts of the second event. It was quite the power party. I got to chat for...

thing My friend Alex at University of California Press gave me a review copy of the book Thing Knowledge: A Philosophy of Scientific Instruments by Davis Baird. Sounds heavy, but on first glance it seems that Baird has balanced deep philosophy with fun machine history! The illustrations and vintage photographs are a treat too. I'm looking forward to digging into it. From Peter Galison's blurb on the back:
"Grappling with a wonderful assortment of objects--from antique orreries to modern spectrographs--Davis Baird draws the reader deep into fascinating questions about the nature of knowledge. As lucid on the semantic account of theories as it is on the inner workings of the cyclotron, this book that brings the laboratory to philosophers and philosophy into the laboratory."
Warning: At $65, it's a pricey book, probably due to a limited print run. Link

Strengthening The Knowledge Economy

Strengthening The Knowledge Economy 02/12/2004 01:20 AM
As Congress considers the fiscal 2005 federal budget proposed by President Bush last week, our elected representatives face difficult choices among many competing priorities. One of the most important priorities, essential to ensuring America’s future economic vitality, is sustaining the nation’s commitment to research and development in science and technology. Federal support for R&D drives a cycle of innovation that fuels the economy. Since World War II, tens of millions of jobs have resulted from government-sponsored scientific breakthroughs that industry developed into world-changing technologies such as today’s personal computers and the Internet. These commercial advances accounted for more than one-third of United States economic growth during the late 1990s, and they continue to stimulate renewed growth today.

I put little messages and pictures in the sidebar! Come back to the lovely old HTML megnut.com!) that I'll be attending the 4th Annual O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference later this month in San Diego. I've been to every Emerging Tech conference and am once again looking forward to the trip and the experience. I'm especially looking forward to hearing New Yorker columnist James Surowiecki speak (Independent Individuals and Wise Crowds, or Is It Possible to Be Too Connected?), as he's one of my favs from the magazine. And there's a hardware hacks (Hardware Hacks from the Far Side) session that piques my interest as well. I always find I go to the sessions about hardware and then envision myself soldering things and building my own army of robots once I get home. Alas, I have yet to build one robot arm or leg, so there's nothing even close to a company or regiment of robots in my apartment. But maybe this is the year! Of course, my army of robots would be a peace-loving type of army, tasked with feeding the cat while I'm out of town and emptying his kitty litter. Maybe they'd do some dishes too. In summary, in case you had trouble following that crazy post: I'm going to the Emerging Technology Conference. And: yay!

Online Divorce Getting More Respectable

Online Divorce Getting More Respectable 01/22/2004 12:48 PM
Everyone seems fascinated by the idea of getting a divorce online. After all, these days, most wedding planning is done online, so why not divorces? We first mentioned the idea two and a half years ago, and it's become incre asingly popular. However, there were some concerns last year that many online divorces were really scams. Now, however, it sounds like the whole online divorce thing is going mainstream with new companies trying to get in on the market. Of course, there are still concerns about both scams and whether or not getting divorced should be so easy. Considering the ease with which a couple can get married in the first place, I guess it makes sense to make it just as easy on the other end. If people are really concerned about the "easiness" of the process, perhaps they should focus on the marriage side before they worry so much about the divorce.

On my way to sunny San Diego 02/10/2004 02:56 AM
I'm writing this on the plane to the O'Reilly Digital Democracy Teach-In and Emerging Technologies conference in sunny San Diego. Sitting just behind me on the plane and reading news on paper is Tim O'Reilly, whose generosity made it possible for me to attend the conferences. I infer that he must have a lot of confidence in Rael and the smooth workings of the whole O'Reilly organization to wait to show up until the night before a 4 day conference he is putting on. I'm excited about learning more about new technologies, and encouraged that technologists are thinking about how they can improve our badly wounded democracy, as well as catching up with a lot of people that I know only from email and their writing. Unlike a lot of other people, I'm not particularly good at writing while people are speaking -- I find that it distracts me from thinking about what they are saying, so I probably won't write much during the conference. I leave that up to the usual suspects, who can type faster than I can speak, and who manage to add decent commentary as well....

I've snapped a photo from my phone so you can get an idea of my new "look" and how tired I am from flying so very far in a horribly old cramped 737 that felt like taking a pick-up truck through the sky for six+ hours.

First impressions of San Diego

First impressions of San Diego 02/10/2004 02:56 AM
I arrived in San Diego fairly late, and went straight to my hotel. In the interest of economy, I had decided to stay in the local Hostel. I wouldn't recommend it. Speaking politely, it is grimy. They sell ear plugs at the front desk. I don't mind spartan, but I like clean. I've stayed in $12 hotels in Central America that were cleaner and had more amenities. And there is no net connection, not even dial-up! I would happily trade the old TV in the room for a phone line, and both of them for a good cleaning. Oh well, I don't expect to spend much time in the hotel, and luckily I used HTTrack Website Copier to mirror the O'Reilly Conference website before I left Berkeley, so at least I have conference resources locally. After getting settled in my hotel room, I decided to go for a walk before going to bed, and I wandered over to the Westin where the conference is going to be held. Not having a clue as to what the neighborhood was like late at night, I decided not to bring my computer with me. The sight of a Hooters a block away from my hotel didn't fill me with confidence about the security of the area. I had never seen a Hooters before - I thought they were a mythical chain, equivalent to unicorns. Guess not. I suspect I have some culture shocks coming, on my third trip to Southern California in my 20 years living in California. I had a lovely walk over to the Westin. The air was balmy, and it was comfortable walking in shirt sleeves. The streets in the Gaslamp district were mostly empty, except for a few straggling partiers, drunks, and homeless folks. I wandered into the lounge in the Westin, and found a number of geeks taking advantage of the free wireless in the bar. I had a drink and watched the digerati arrive and gather. Many of the same people who I always see at these conferences -- the dour Dan Gillmor, the ever polite Doc Searls, the bubbling Cory Doctorow, plus the crew from O'Reilly -- the mysterious Rael Dornfest, and the earnest Schuyler Erle, had gathered around the tables. There were also lots of people I've never met, like Jon Lebkowsky and a group of young European hackers swapping jet-lag stories. After my drink...

On the plane to San Diego

On the plane to San Diego 02/10/2004 02:47 AM

Back before all this weblogging stuff, I used to work as a consultant. Every Monday I had to get up and fly off to some city (Newark NJ, Bloomington IL by way of Chicago, Atlanta, etc.) where I'd spend the week working on-site at the client's office, and then I'd fly home on Friday afternoon, often barely arriving in time for dinner. I'd have two days home, and then be off again bright early Monday AM. It was fun and grueling, and this morning I got a little taste of my old life.

I woke up at 4:45 AM to catch a 7 AM flight to San Diego for the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference. At the gate I noticed my former compatriots, the Monday morning business travelers. During the pre-boarding, I was the only woman, surrounded by men with suits, briefcases, and trench coats. It was just like the old days, and yet it wasn't, thanks to the amazing technology advances in the past six years. In the past it used to take me two laptop batteries to make it across the country, and even then, I'd often run out. And as for music, I was pretty much limited to the amount of CDs I could carry with me. So far today I've been flying for over three hours and I've got nearly 50% of my battery left on my iBook. My iPod also still has half its charge, and over 4 straight days of music sit at my fingertips. Pretty incredible, it sure makes for a more pleasant trip. Now if only they could do something about speeding up the flight, and warming up the plane!
