iTerm
12/16/2002 11:12 AMiTerm was released
12/08/2002 but somehow I missed it. iTerm is a Terminal Emulator
for OS X. It supports tabbed windows too. I really like it. It seems a
ton snappier than Terminal.app.

04/14/2004 02:20 AMSome of my posts have been getting kind of long, so I figured I
might as well move the wordier pieces over to the feature section (and
I could finally rid the world of Anil's mug). Piece
s of the Future is a collection of thoughts I had tonight after
watching Pieces of April for the first time. It was pretty good as a
film, but I think it could be a milestone in filmmaking.
VoIP is a Feature
VoIP is a Feature
01/07/2004 02:27 PMVoIP is one of the exciting dark horses of the new Internet
landscape -- and as broadband penetration grows, quality improves and
costs come down to the $20/month range, it will emerge as one of the
recovery drivers in the communications services industry.
Also, people are now finally understanding that "Voice" is just an
"application on the Internet", rather than it's own whole
infrastructure universe. But just the same, "voice" is just a
feature of broadband communications and collaboration. Adding
presence to voice is also interesting, with services such as Skype and
some specialized SIP implementations doing this -- and of course
consumer IM clients have gradually been adding more voice and video
communications to their services, though are still somewhat dogged by
quality issues, lack of cross platform or cross IM communications, and
often firewall issues.
Further, it's all great that we now have a dozen end-points where
we can be contacted by text and voice, asynchronously and in
real-time, but we still haven't solved the problem of gathering the
right people, when they are needed. The problem of convocation
management is central to Convoq's ASAP online service (in free public
trial). It flexibly supports multi-mode (text/audio/video)
multi-party (1:1, groups of several people, or 1:100 seminar
format) communications and conferencing, but with great tools for
handling the process of getting people together.

what Adobe’s aiming for with the latest InDesign.

Macworld feature: From VHS to DVD
06/04/2004 09:09 AMSomewhere in your house is a drawer full of videotapes -- aging home
movies shot with a big, bulky camcorder that may not even work
anymore. You haven't watched these movies in years, but all this talk
about the digital hub and iLife has got you thinking, "Why not
transfer those old videos to the Mac and burn them to DVDs?"
Transferring old film and video to DVD can be a time-consuming process
-- but it's well worth the effort. This step-by-step guide will show
you how to get set up and what to do with the movies once they're on
your Mac.

Feature in search of a DLA
Feature in search of a DLA
08/02/2004 04:24 AMOh yes did I forget to mention that OpenEvents needs to happen? -
soon!
I'm so tired of these single feature supposed products - without
social networks, personal publishing - just sitting there, all by
themselves. Do they think that by including RSS - they're hip and
tuned in?
I wonder?
Without friends - this product is absurd.
Anyway - here's Roland's post that I found out about this lovely
feature - I mean product.
Now if only this would work seamlessly with iCal it would be
even better.
From RSSCalendar
.com - Product Overview:
QUOTE
RSSCalendar is an exciting
new way for individuals and organizations to share their calendars
with family, friends, and colleagues - utilizing the latest in
"Really Simple Syndication" (RSS) technology, including RSS channel
creation and aggregation. Not only is RSSCalendar easy to use but it
is also easy to administer, and setup is a
snap.
UNQUOTE
[
Roland Tanglao]
Roland's right though - it certainly needs to support iCal and it
certainly is simple.

Unsung new feature
Unsung new feature
09/26/2004 01:27 PMOne of my favorite new features in NetNewsWire didn’t get its
own page or make it as a bullet point on the what’s new page.
It used to be that if you have a group selected and it has unread
items—but they’re all above where you are in the headlines
table—then going to the next unread item would (annoyingly!)
expand the group and take you to a feed inside the group.
There was a logic to this, but it was totally annoying anyway. And it
was reported often as a bug.
In talking to NetNewsWire users and testers, we discovered that people
really want three distinct behaviors for going to next/previous
unread:
1. Always respect the expansion state of the Subscriptions list.
That is, if a group is expanded, it’s okay for next-unread to
select a feed in that group. Otherwise it should move on to the next
group.
2. Stay at the top level of the Subscriptions list.
That is, don’t ever automatically expand groups, and don’t
select feeds if they’re inside a group.
3. Always expand groups and skip to feeds.
Some people like to group their feeds, but they prefer to have a feed
(rather than a group) selected when they’re reading.
So these options are available at the bottom of the General
preferences pane.

ADO.NET 2.0 Feature Matrix
ADO.NET 2.0 Feature Matrix
07/13/2004 12:25 AMADO.NET 2.0 comes with a plethora of new features. This includes a new
base-class–based provider model and features that all providers can
take advantage of, as well as changes that are specific to
System.Data.SqlClient. Because the .NET Framework 2.0 is being
released in conjunction with SQL Server 2005, some of these features
require SQL Server 2005 to be usable. This article is meant to serve
as an overview and roadmap of the new features, give examples of their
use, and includes a chart of which features are provider-neutral and
which are SqlClient-specific. In future articles in this series, I'll
be going over some of the features in greater detail. In addition,
there are many new features of the DataSet and friends; these will be
covered in future articles.

05/03/2004 03:02 PMOverheard at work today regarding the number of mail accounts on our
system: We've got more email groups [eg. marketingteam@example.com]
than we do user accounts [eg. jim@example.com], by a factor of more
than 2 to 1. Bit of a lesson in that statement for software
developers, I think. If you've got N users on your system, those N
users can form ~N^2 groups. For example, a system containing 50

12/18/2003 02:25 PMOne of my favorite NetNewsWire features is not new in 1.0.7, but I
suspect many people don’t know about it.
When reading the new-headlines feed or a group, you can delete read
items by typing the letter d. (Just d, no modifier.) (Or choose Delete
Read Items from the News menu; or type option-cmd-K.)
It’s just a little thing, but I find it very useful.
You can find more keyboard shortcuts like that by choosing Keyboard
Shortcuts from the Help menu.

Gmail feature surprise
Gmail feature surprise
04/22/2004 01:28 PMLast night I left my desktop PC's browser open to my gmail account
and took my laptop to the library to do some writing. I read some new
mail on the powerbook, responded to a few things, then came home and
slept. Today I came back to my desk to see gmail running, with all the
messages I had read and responded to shown as read and responded to.
Since gmail just refreshes the page in your browser every so often,
if you read your mail at one location, other locations are updated
automatically. This is something POP3 mail rarely gets right and why I
used to use IMAP when I would check mail from multiple machines. It's
nice to see a web app get this key feature right from the get-go. If
you read email at work and at home, gmail will work perfectly fine,
even if you leave your mail windows open in both places.
