Jumping On The VoWiFi Bandwagon

Jumping On The VoWiFi Bandwagon 12/17/2003 02:28 PM
VoIP is hot. WiFi is hot. So, why not combine the two into a VoWiFi service? At least that appears to be the thinking of a number of companies who maybe haven't thought through all the details. The latest is a Canadian company that is offering a softphone VoIP service for use at WiFi hotspots. That is, you get a piece of software that works as a phone on your computer. Then, whenever your computer is hooked up to the internet, such as at a hotspot, you can use your computer as a phone (assuming you have a headset). And they want to charge for this. They seem to be ignoring the fact that there are a number of similar VoIP providers that are offering free service (Free World Dialup, Skype, SIPphone, etc.). The big "difference" is that this new company, mobitus, already has a set gateway to a regular phone system. But, the others are all getting there, and don't charge at all for the ability to use the basic service. Also, you have to wonder why the focus is on both ends of the VoWiFi equation with this one. Since people don't tend to use hotspots all that often, isn't this a solution that's better pitched as just a VoIP solution, that you can use at the home, office or on the road - basically anywhere you have an internet connection? By pitching it as only useful at hotspots, they've cut down on their market quite a bit - especially since hotspot use is still very small. Besides, let's face it, if you're in a hotspot somewhere, is your first thought going to be to pull out your headset and use a clunky softphone interface, or to just pull out your trusty mobile phone?

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

washingtonpost.com - Plenty of tech experts have spent years trying to convince the general public that the Linux operating system is becoming more of a threat to Microsoft's Windows. With the LinuxWorld conference underway this week in San Francisco, there is finally a sure-fire sign that this may be the case: Microsoft won't be there.

Open source cracks publishing wide open

Open source cracks publishing wide open 06/17/2004 11:24 AM
Once upon a time, publishing was the domain of large corporations. Then came desktop publishing and the tools to produce a book shrank from the cost of an aircraft carrier to the price tag of a PT boat. Now, small publishers on the bleeding edge of technology are fomenting a revolution that may change the publishing market forever. Open source publishing tools, long derided as not being ready for battle, are proving themselves in the trenches of small publishing.

The White Rabbit has beckoned us down the wrong rabbit hole. Much has been made about the open source revolution, and with good reason. The open source development model produces superior software. But, in my estimation, the real promise of open source lies not in open source, but rather in open distribution. Here's why ...

Most of the attention and current criticism of America's e-voting infrastructure and technology is focused on the lack of a verifiable paper audit trail, but an equally prominent issue is the closed nature of election system certification, companies, and software.
