09/09/2004 02:31 PM
ILY Enterprise Inc. announced on Thursday that it will begin shipping its portable CD/DVD duplicator, dubbed SlimDVDup (US$699), in early October. The device, which measures 6 x 7 x 1.5 inches, can copy discs with or without a computer -- it plugs into a USB 2.0 port for the former. It can read data, video or audio and make an identical copy on CD-R/RW, DVD+/-R/RW or DVD-RAM media. ILY noted, however, that the SlimDVDup can't bypass copy protection, including the CSS encryption found on commercial DVDs. In addition, it can edit precise tracks for custom audio CD creation. The device also features quick-erase, full-erase and program/repeat modes as well as an audio stereo jack and digital volume control for playing back audio tracks. Mac OS X v10.1.2 is required.

01/06/2005 12:17 AM
Today at 2005 International CES, Microsoft Corp. announced broad, additional support for the PlaysForSure™ logo program - both for devices and upcoming services. In addition to many portable music players that are PlaysForSure-verified, there are now new televisions and DVD players designed for PlaysForSure compatibility that feature built-in connections to wireless or wired home networks for the easy playback of photos, as well as subscription-based music and video via a Windows® XP-based PC. At CES 2005, D-Link Systems Inc. and Digitrex debuted connected high-definition (HD) TVs, HD displays and DVD players designed to be part of the PlaysForSure logo program, and Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. demonstrated a concept plasma display. In addition, a range of new color-screen, mini-hard-drive portable devices supporting both music and photos are designed to be PlaysForSure-verified, including the Gateway MP3 Photo Jukebox, iriver H10 and the Samsung YH-925 and YH-820. First announced at Microsoft's Digital Entertainment Anywhere launch event in October, the PlaysForSure logo is designed to help consumers with Windows XP-based PCs choose devices and online music and video stores that work together, taking the guesswork out of compatibility.

Supernova: Social Spreadsheets

Supernova: Social Spreadsheets 06/28/2004 03:12 AM

Phil Windler has a report from an interesting panel at Supernova....

These are some comments and thoughts from a panel called "The Network is People." Esther Dyson, Ray Ozzie, Mena Trott, and Christopher Allen were the panelists.

Spreadsheets were amazing because they sit in the middle, between calculators and the corporate accounting system. They let people not just change the numbers, but to change the models and to build new models. The power of the spreadsheet is the power to persuade people (some might say "beat them into submission"). Spreadsheets are as much about group interaction as presentation software is.

Social networks have a problem in that they let you record relationships, but they don't give you power to control interactions. They provide too many opportunities for "friend inflation." They don't accurately reflect people's real social networks. What we need is a "wiki for transactions." We need a way for users to manage their workflow in a flexible way--a spreadsheet for social interactions.

Would you rather have ten networks with 700,000 people in them or 700,000 networks with ten people in them? This is an interesting question. Linked-In is the first. Blogs are the second.

[Phil Windley]

Esther's idea for a social software spreadsheet are right on. She wants someone to be able to author their own sequence of events to 'script' their own social software actions. Sort of like roll your own LinkedIn.

She said this right after folks were attacking the entire premise of explicit social networking - saying that it was too artificial for expressing real-life relationships.

But I say that without explcit social networking - we'll never be abel to deliver Esther's social software spreadsheet.

An error in a spreadsheet or Web page calculation sounds harmless enough, unless you're the person whose retirement funds, credit history or medical treatment rely on decisions based on that calculation. A six-campus team of computer scientists led by Margaret Burnett at Oregon State University is working to help exterminate the bugs that infest the spreadsheets and other "programs" created by millions of computer users. You may not think of yourself as a programmer, but that's just what you are if you've ever created a simple Web application that grabs data, such as current weather conditions, from another site, entered a formula in a spreadsheet or automated a repetitive task in your e-mail client or word processor. Experts estimate the number of these so-called "end-user programmers" to reach 55 million by 2005, and the same experts suggest that nearly half of the programs created by these end users have nontrivial bugs.

FCC allows mix-and-match antennae

FCC allows mix-and-match antennae 07/23/2004 12:48 PM
The FCC has a new and somewhat baroque regulation that legalizes plugging aftermarket antennae into your WiFi access-points. In a long post on WiFiNetNews, Glenn Fleishman takes apart the new regulation and explains in admirably.
The FCC rule doesn’t suddenly make all antennas legal for all systems. Instead, they have chosen a clever middle ground. For new devices—or, presumably for recertification of old devices—manufacturers will be allowed to test the system with high-gain antennas of each major type, like omni, patch, yagi, and so forth. Once the device is certified, the manufacturer can release the characteristics of the antennas they tested for both their in-band and out-of-band signal patterns and strengths. (Out-of-band transmissions are the inevitable but not intentional frequencies that are broadcast on at typically very low levels due to harmonics and other technical radio issues.)
