Invisibility, not just for Sci-Fi
Invisibility, not just for Sci-Fi
06/14/2004 01:12 PMSusumu Tachi has invented an ‘invisibilty’ cloak and is
moving onto making invisible walls. This could be used to see outside
in rooms without windows. “This technology can be used in all
kinds of ways, but I wanted to create a vision of invisibility,”
he said. The cloack works by projecting an image generated by a
computer onto itself of what is behind the person who is wearing it.

MS Patents Paying Bills, IM Invisibility
MS Patents Paying Bills, IM Invisibility
01/05/2005 02:19 PMtheodp writes
"Apparently Microsoft's resolved to leave no stone unpatented,
starting out the New Year with patents for Paying Bills ('the consumer is in direct control of the amount
to be paid and the payment date') and IM Invisibility ('users may not ever even know that they are
viewing inaccurate presence information'). Coincidentally, IM
invisibility was the subject of a quip
made by MS blogger Robert Scoble a day before the patent was
issued." The paying bills patent is a little more involved -- as
it's more about "managing" how you pay your bills to avoid overdraft
problems. Not sure that's really patentable, but it's not just for
paying bills. The IM one is amusing, and you can bet Yahoo will have
something to say about that, considering they already have selective
IM invisibility enabled on their client (which is also the answer to
Scoble's question).

Another Portable NES: Game Axe
Another Portable NES: Game Axe
08/16/2004 12:41 PM
So
apparently that Pockefami portable NES machine we were talking about
is far from the first portable NES player. In fact, the GameAxe, from
Taiwanese grey market manufacturer Redant was created way back in '95.
Although never released in the US for obvious reasons, the GameAxe is
essentially an NES in portable form, with a 3.8-inch LCD screen and a
screaming 1.8MHz 8-bit CPU. They fetch high dollars, though, from
retro freaks; this one on eBay is probably going to go for well over
$200.
There was another portable unit that could play NES carts, as well,
called the "Top Guy." It reportedly had a general suck to it, but it
did have one cool feature: an FCC-be-damned low-power VHF transmitter
that made any TV within a few feet display the game you were playing.
(Thanks, Myron!)

Portable and off the grid
Portable and off the grid
12/03/2003 04:55 PM Necessity Is the Mother of Invention. (NY
Times, reg. req.) Amy
Smith teaches MIT students about the politics of delivering
technology to poor nations and the nitty-gritty of mechanical
engineering and helped start the
IDEAS competition; she herself designed
(among other things) a screenless
hammer mill suited to third-world conditions and using
"materials available to a blacksmith in
Senegal."
Smith's entire life is like one of her
inventions, portable and off the grid. At 41, she has no kids, no car,
no retirement plan and no desire for a Ph.D. Her official title:
instructor. ''I'm doing exactly what I want to be doing. Why would I
spend six years to get a Ph.D. to be in the position I'm in now, but
with a title after my name? M.I.T. loves that I'm doing this work. The
support is there. So I don't worry.''...
Likewise, the inventors who most inspire her will never strike it
rich. ''There are geniuses in Africa, but they're not getting the
press,'' she says. She gushes about Mohammed Bah
Abba, a Nigerian teacher who came up with the pot-within-a-pot
system. With nothing more than a big terra-cotta bowl, a little pot,
some sand and water, Abba created a refrigerator -- the rig uses
evaporation rather than electricity to keep vegetables cool.
Innovations that target the poorest of the poor don't have to be
complicated to make a big difference. The best solution is sometimes
the most obvious.
A rare optimistic story for these
downbeat times.

Pockefami: Portable NES

From the Japanese company
that brought you bizarre products such as the Gameboy Advance TV tuner
and USB battery recharger (that also works from the Playstation 2 USB
port) comes the "Pokefami," or a portable version of the Nintendo
Entertainment System. Though this reeks of vaporware, I guess because
of the renderings rather than photographs, the specifications are,
let's say, "realistic."
It features a 2.5" LCD screen, meager 3 hour battery life, video
out for connecting to your TV, and even a port for plugging in another
controller. Cost? 13,000 yen, about $117 USD. Quite steep, considering
a sizeable flash cart for a normal GBA SP can be had for that price.
Not that I would encourage anything as quasi-legal as emulation, but
hey, just saying.
