Hey, Your Library's Books Are in My
Google. No, Your Google Is in My Library
Books.
12/19/2004 03:36 PM

So the big< /a> news is about Google and libraries. I don't feel the need to comment on this right now, as you can find plenty of other places for that. However, here are a few angles I haven't seen discussed elsewhere in the library blogosphere.

  • Librari es and the Internet

"More broadly, the Internet can profoundly improve the relationship between libraries and society. For example, there are two major libraries in my town -- a college library, and a public library. My library card works in both places. I used to favor the college library, because there was open WiFi access there -- which meant, among other things, that I could use LibraryLookup from my laptop to find books in the stacks. Recently, though, the college shut down its open access point. And from an IT administrator's point of view, I can understand why. Not long after, the public library installed an open access point. So now it's my favorite spot, and lately I notice other mobile professionals congregating there too." [Jon Udell's Weblog
(Click over to read Jon's story about getting locked in the library, too!)

  • "A quick calculation using the figures above suggests an average scan rate of 3200 volumes per day (assuming 365 days/year for 6 years) at the University of Michigan site alone." [Tito Sierra on the WEB4 LIB mailing list]

  • "An even quicker calculation shows that they will need to digitize 2.25 books _a_minute_, 24 hours/day, 365 days/year to digitize 7 million volumes in six years." [Roy Tennant on the WEB4 LIB mailing list]

It's times like this when I wish Karen Coyle had< /a> a blog.

Let's start the lottery... 04/09/2004 04:09 PM
So, the Finnish blog awards ceremony is tomorrow evening. The board is set, and the pieces are moving. We are expecting a big crowd and a wonderful, magic-filled night.

But.

I booked myself a teleconference at 8 am on Friday - just because I calculated a timezone difference the WRONG WAY! And now it's too late to change it. ARG! Either timezones, or people who are bad at maths should be declared illegal. I really, really don't like this timezone lottery...

People who are not working for global companies do not know what they are missing.

Update: Luckily other people did also screw up with the calculations (I mean, out of like, five engineers, apparently only TWO can count!?!?), and so the meeting's off. Phew. Saved by a calculator.

How to Win the Powerball Lottery

How to Win the Powerball Lottery 04/25/2004 02:39 AM
Powerball is the poster child for the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL). It is currently played every Wednesday and Saturday in 30 states by millions of people who are dumb enough to think that they can actually win the jackpot. The truth of the matter is that somebody will win the jackpot... just not you. And it's not because the odds are against you. It's because you don't know how to successfully play the lottery. Inside, I'll go over winning techniques from "how to pick winning numbers" to "how many tickets to buy" and "which rituals have the best payoff". I also go over a sure-fire way to win the jackpot. Please gamble responsibly. If you decide to gamble irresponsibly, smoke while you do it so that you at least look cool.

Spam-A-Friend Lottery Tickets

Spam-A-Friend Lottery Tickets 08/12/2004 04:30 AM
Back during the first dot com boom years, the "email a friend" option was particularly popular with most new sites, until it quickly turned into the "spam a friend" offering. Most sites have worked to limit the spamming -- and many people have finally realized that their friends don't want to be bombarded by never-ending offers for things they don't want over email. However, the online lottery service LottoFun (based in South Africa) had a little glitch in their spam-a-friend system. Even worse, since they promised to pay people for each spammed friend that signed up, someone figured out a way to send out more than the 5 friend spam limit the site set up. He actually ended up spam ming 8,000 "friends" before the site shut him down. The best part, however, is that the man in question claims that all of those 8,000 people really are his friends, family or "people who have e-mailed him before," and therefore doesn't believe he's done anything wrong.
