08/06/2004 08:11 AMHutchings Software announced on Thursday that a Beta of its
Bosco's Screen
Share is now available for download. The application provides a
cross-platform solution for sharing desktops between Mac OS X, Mac OS
9 and Windows computers over a network or the Internet. Company
founder Brad Hutchings told MacCentral that Bosco's Screen Share
eschews the open source multi-platform screen sharing technology VNC
in favor of a proprietary protocol, with graphics compression handled
in the JPEG format and graphics scaling accomplished by using his
Component X Graphics software. REALbasic was used to implement the
communications protocol, which operates over TCP/IP.

A Desktop That Will End The Desktop Wars
A Desktop That Will End The Desktop Wars
01/19/2004 01:46 AMThe problem why there are so many battles and wars on the desktop is
primarily due to lack of standards. Most of the desktop models
rolled-out nowadays contain vendor specific implementation that is
usable within the vendor definition. As a result, no interconnection
between dissimilar environments (brandwise) exists. One can see some
interfaces that work while others are only available on one, missing
on another.

Photo Sharing Gone Wild
Photo Sharing Gone Wild
06/25/2004 05:10 PM“Moblogs are weblogs that typically feature grainy, low-res
photos taken with cell phone cameras. People e-mail the images from
their phones to a site like Fotolog, Plogger, or TextAmerica, where
their pix can be immediately seen and ridiculed (or praised) by
complete strangers. Besides offering instant, if limited, celebrity,
moblogs provide a unique form of spontaneous photojournalism. They can
also be downright weird.”

07/13/2004 12:13 PMWell, it's not quite as big a deal as Yahoo buying Oddpost, but Google
has now
bought photo-sharing company
Picasa, which was already a Blogger partner. It's not a huge
surprise to see Google expanding their offerings in more of the portal
direction. The only question, of course, is how many spare Gmail gigs
are going to be offered for people storing photos. Also, will people
now complain that Google is scanning your personal photos in order to
put up relevant advertising?

"If youre really hardcore about traveling light, you might
want to become the ultimate road warrior and dispense with your laptop
or PDA altogether and get M-Systems Xkey 2.0, a USB key drive
with a 32-bit processor inside it that lets you run programs right off
of it. The idea is to have everything you need for work (email,
databases, Java applets) stored on the portable drive, and then you
can just plug it into any PC you can find (maybe hotels could even
offer loaner laptops to business travelers), and you have a fully
functional workstation, exactly like the one you use at work. Even
better than that? Unplug it from the PC and it leaves no traces of
your work behind the Xkey 2.0 even removes web browser cookies
and all temporary files." [Engadget]

Flickr , a
popular web site for publishing and sharing digital photographs, was
purchased by Yahoo .
This represents a connection between the worlds of search and
social software, recalling Google's
purchase of popular blog service
Blogger in 2003. Additionally, Flickr is well-known for
pioneering user-generated metadata, or
folksonomy , which may be significant for the larger world of Web
