Power Mac G5: Excellent

Power Mac G5: Excellent 01/07/2004 02:06 PM
“Power Mac G5 is Apple’s best work yet,” reads the headline on Tom Yager’s review in InfoWorld. The story summary continues the bouquet: “The Power Mac G5 desktop workstation presents the ideal balance of compatibility, performance, usability, and value. It has serious number-crunching capabilities, but this machine most clearly outshines Intel-based systems when performing complex operations on massive disk and/or RAM-based data sets.” Mac OS X 10.3 Panther and Mac OS X 10.3 Panther Server also are rated “Excellent” by Yager. The origins of the term "inside baseball" are in one writer's view of sports reporting during the 1980s. He's Bill James, now a famous scholar of baseball. The arguments he made then explain why the term migrated so easily to politics. The inside, said James, is a hall of mirrors.

Excellent article about Fantagraphics

Excellent article about Fantagraphics 09/16/2004 06:40 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: fantaguysComic book and book publisher Fantagraphics is an international treasure. I love their books and comics, and I love their production values. On those days that I feel that life is not worth living, I remember that Fantagraphics exists and I cheer up tremendously.
...Fantagraphics is more like Sub Pop—a well-known, highly regarded, but still relatively small publisher, most of whose best sellers wouldn't sell enough to stay on a major label for more than an album or two. For Fantagraphics, being put in charge of The Complete Peanuts is akin to Sub Pop being handed the Beatles' master tapes for reissue. And Fantagraphics has done the strip right, with gorgeous design (the art director is Palookaville artist Seth, aka Gregory Gallant, whose style was deeply influenced by Schulz) and ambitious outlay (Fantagraphics is planning two a year for the next 12 and a half years, 25 volumes covering 50 years of weekly strips, including Sundays).

04/01/2005 02:29 PM
Longtime Apple notebook carrying case maker, Brenthaven, has introduced a new shoulder case that offers users protection for a 12- or 15-inch notebook in one bag. Unlike other 15-inch cases that can easily fit a 12-inch notebook -- although not as snugly -- Brenthaven says the new bag incorporates the CORE protection system, which adjusts its grip to accommodate different size notebooks. The Brenthaven Pro 12/15-inch Shoulder Case has a twin compartment with a combination accordion file folder and multimedia pockets designed for notebook accessories, cables and files. There's also an all-new organizer panel with a special iPod protective pocket and plenty of space for a cell phone.

The War Against Cold Fusion. Are our scientists selling us short? Is there a conspiracy? Are we addicted to large, expensive and ungainly projects? Are our scientists blinded by the almighty dollar, the grandiose, the overtly kinetic?

If it seems too simple or too good to be true, are we even capable of accepting proof if it isn't? Is free - well, almost free - a dirty word? Are we getting screwed in the interest of profits yet again?

Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM

Of Cold Fusion And Perfect DRM 04/19/2005 11:06 AM
It's funny how every year or so, some company comes out with a claim that it has created the absolute perfect copy protection system that works perfectly every time, preventing unauthorized copying, but allowing authorized playback. The latest such claim comes along with amusing boasts such as its ability to "wipe out" file sharing. Beyond the fact that most content companies (despite their claims) don't want to wipe out file sharing, there simply is no way to make a perfect copy protection system. If the content needs to be seen, listened to or read, then there will be a way to make a copy and get it on a file sharing system. It's that simple. Of course, we're dealing with industries that seem to have no problems whatsoever in exaggerating claims -- so perhaps it's normal. Next thing you know, we'll find out that these firms are working on cold fusion and perpetual motion machines.

Have We Written Off Cold Fusion Too
Soon?
04/23/2004 01:32 PM
Fusion research is generally considered something of a pseudo-science in some circles as almost every major announcement in the field is later disproven or made highly questionable when the results weren't reproducible. However, some researchers won't give up, and some are saying that, while it may still be early, some of the experiments are showing reproducible results, suggesting that there may actually be something to the theories. After so many people have been burned by cold fusion claims, it makes sense to remain skeptical for now, but maybe the science isn't as pseudo as some believed.

Ford Fusion Web Site

Ford Fusion Web Site 03/22/2005 04:31 PM

Ford mines consumers' wants: This is pretty brilliant. Ford is using a Web site to let people outfit fantasy Fusions — a new sedan coming next year. But they're not just throwing away the data.

It's an attempt to more closely align consumer demand with actual production, which often can be difficult.

The company is letting virtual shoppers build their own Fusions on the Web, including pricing options and picking colors. At the end, people are asked to fill out a survey giving their thoughts on what else they'd like to see on the cars.

So if 60% of the people make fake Fusions in the color blue, guess what color the majority of real Fusions will be?
