Depressed over Daisy

Depressed over Daisy 06/22/2005 02:54 AM
You know, seeing open source projects like Daisy make me just want to stop JSPWiki development altogether. It's simply just too good, and I feel like there's no way I can compete.

Daisy will be a winner.

Update and a bit of soul-searching:

Heh. Thanks for your kind words, Steven. FWIW, I'm not quitting JSPWiki development, but frankly, I was in awe while looking at what Daisy has accomplished. It really fills a gap that has been in the software space, and it has learned quite a few lessons from Wikis.

The thing is, Daisy being Java makes it far more interesting to corporations. Individuals prefer to deploy PHP or other light-weight apps that can be easily installed on web hotels, and so far the JSPWiki niche has been in corporate intranet deployments. Something like Daisy will surely eat into that niche, and it makes me think if I should refocus my attentions elsewhere. Find perhaps a new focus for JSPWiki, or something.

The other thing is that I have quite a lot of ideas I would like to put into reality. JSPWiki's code base is (still) pretty healthy, and there's much life still in it - in fact it seems that jspwiki.org is finally running on its own without my constant watch. There are some professional developers contributing very good quality code, and many people seem to like the whole project. But since nobody is paying me to work on it (any volunteers? :), I am using something like two hours a day on it. Which amounts to quite a lot of work over the years, but I still know that I can't match the power of professionally employed developers working 8/5 on an OSS project. And that sort of makes me sad, because I would like to match the quality - to have an even race, so to speak.

It's kinda like seeing your neighbour buy a new, powerful Ferrari, while you still drive an old, crumbling Fiesta because you don't have any money. You kinda feel happy for him, but you also feel jealous. You kinda want to deride him for it, and want to say mean things, but at your heart you still know that you would do the exact same thing if you could.

Daisy's really good. I'm just a bit jealous at the people who get to work on something like that full-time. In my current dayjob I get to do little hands-on stuff. I mean, it's interesting in every possible way, and I like many things about it, and the people I work with are some of the smartest people I've ever met, and I would have the opportunity to drive many things, but still I find that my heart is not completely into it.

After all, I'm a tinkerer at heart. I get delight on the beauty of code; I enjoy the feeling of making things 'click'. I like to simplify things so that other people find use in them - maybe because that solicits feedback. The beauty of open source for me is that you can't hide anything: when you put it out there, people will see it for what it is really worth. It's like a painting, or sculpture: it's naked and visible for anyone to see and judge - you don't hide parts of it under a blanket and just show the good bits. And getting positive feedback on something like that is one of the few things that can really make my heart tick.

Wayport to be Replaced at SeaTac

Wayport to be Replaced at SeaTac 02/10/2004 02:40 AM
The new Wi-Fi network that AT&T Wireless is building at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will replace the existing network which is owned and operated by Wayport: Wayport appeared unaware of the new network or the impending cancellation of its relationship with the airport. The airport will own the network that AT&T Wireless is building and AT&T Wireless isn't charging the airport for the equipment or installation. The Wi-Fi network comes for free as part of AT&T Wireless's contract to install cellular equipment that will improve cell coverage inside the airport. Airport officials have not decided who will operate the new Wi-Fi network but they are clear about the future of Wayport's network. "Wayport will depart," said Bob Parker, a SeaTac spokesman. Wayport has operated the network at SeaTac for over four years. Its contract ended last year and since then it has been on a month-to-month contract with the airport. "Wayport owns those hotspots. We imagine they will come in and remove them," said John Faulkner, aviation business manager for SeaTac. He hopes that the Wayport network can be shut down at a time that will correspond with the completion of the new network to avoid a breech of service. The new network should be finished by early 2005, though an AT&T Wireless spokesman said he expects it to be completed before then. Wayport seemed unaware of the changes taking place at SeaTac. "We know they're talking to AT&T. We haven't heard anything official," said Dan Lowden, vice president of marketing for Wayport. "We look to continue to work with SeaTac in the way we are." Wayport could be in the running to operate the new network, though it's more likely that if Wayport is involved in the future network it would be through roaming deals with the company that ultimately will operate the network, Faulkner said. As part of the request for proposals to build the cellular and Wi-Fi networks, the airport gave participants the option of bidding on the Wi-Fi operations business as well. AT&T Wireless was one of the bidders that expressed interest in operating the network but the airport has not yet decided who will operate the network. "We want to do the business planning to figure out how to parcel out the network and structure the revenue model," Faulkner said. SeaTac wasn't unhappy with the service from Wayport but the decision to build a cellular network...

Local Lines May Go Away... But Could Be

Local Lines May Go Away... But Could Be
Replaced By VoIP
07/01/2004 03:46 AM
When the FCC was discussing what to do about requiring RBOCs to offer regulated access to local phone lines, one thing many were arguing was that if the regulated pricing was taken away, it would help jumpstart other technologies like wireless and VoIP offerings. Of course, the FCC ended up not going that far, but once a federal court went over their heads many started predicting the end of competition in the telco market. They seemed to get a lot of support for that idea in the last couple weeks as AT&T announced they were killing local phone service in seven states. However, many people ignored the other side of the equation. This move may harm local phone service... but does local phone service matter that much? Just days after announcing those plans to cut back on local phone service, AT&T announced plans to expand their CallVantage VoIP offering to new locations - including some locations where they're ditching local service offerings. In other words, exactly as some predicted, cutting out RBOC line sharing may have cut down on local phone service competition, but is pumping up alternatives.

At what point did the muse disappear and become replaced by the dramaturg? "Scripts aren't written, they're rewritten", goes the cry from all the script gurus - all the literary managers, editors, producers, dramaturgs - not just in theatre but film, too. Why do they say this? Because their jobs depend on it. If scripts were left alone, what would they do? Dominic Dromgoole writes about playwriting in the UK.

Monster App

Monster App 12/17/2004 06:43 PM

I love these new "timed team event" shows like Monster Garage, Monster House, and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. In these shows, a team has to build or convert something in a set time limit, usually five days. There's usually a lot of drama, yelling, and screaming, but they invariably end up with something beautiful at the end that just blows everyone away.

Why not Monster App? Pick a charity organization that needs a new Web site. We could start the show by sitting at the old Web site and laughing at how inept it is. Then we'd get to work.

We'd have five days to build a complete new Web site incorporating all their requirements (which wouldn't be allowed to change — ha!). I can see the late nights, the frayed nerves, the screaming matches when the app starts throwing parse errors 10 minutes before the red countdown clock reaches zero...just before we unveil a cool new Web site that just makes everyone realize how wicked awesome we all are.

I think you could make a show out of this. I'd watch it.
