I just got a Google press release in e-mail, as the result of being on the google press mailing list. NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. & MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - March 10, 2003 - Walt Disney Internet Group (WDIG), and Google, developer of the largest performance-based search advertising program, today announced an agreement through which Google will provide several Disney web properties with Google's search technology and highly relevant sponsored links. (Emphasis mine.) So, they're not calling themselves the biggest, best, fastest,...

There's a community center in my town where you can do things like take classes for a variety of interesting things, play basketball, run on an indoor track, or exercise in the workout facility. Until recently I bought monthly membership passes to use the exercise rooms -- until, that is, someone in management decided to start collecting more information about the members and storing everything on a small, unmonitored, Internet-connected, Windows XP-based network. What were these clowns thinking?

MP3s of former slaves telling their
stories

MP3s of former slaves telling their
stories
01/27/2004 04:07 PM
Mind blowing recordings taken between 1932 and 1975 of former slaves describing their lives.
The former slaves discuss how they felt about slavery, slaveholders, how slaves were coerced, their families, and, of course, freedom. It is important to keep in mind, however, that all of those interviewed spoke sixty or more years after the end of their enslavement, and it is their full lives, rather than their lives during slavery, that are reflected in their words. They have much to say about living as African Americans from the 1870s to the 1930s, and beyond. As part of their testimony, several of the ex-slaves sing songs, many of which were learned during the time of their enslavement.

Ben Mezrich: the telling of a true story

Ben Mezrich: the telling of a true story 02/10/2004 02:57 AM
Ben Mezrich (photo) is the author of Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six MIT Students Who Took Vegas for Millions. I learned about the book first from his Wired article, "Hacking Las Vegas: the inside story of the MIT blackjack team's conquest of the casinos". I got the book this past Christmas and enjoyed it. It's an easy read. The story is engaging. However, in my review at Amazon (page back to 30Dec03), I questioned the book's veracity. To my surprise, I got an e-mail from the author: "Wanted to set your mind at ease... [T]he book is for real, as are the stories in it." Further correspondence resulted in his agreement to a phone interview. It's sad that when an author writes a book as a true story -- even with the backing of a respected publisher like Simon & Schuster -- in our times there are too many skeptics refusing to believe. But, then, they were also the publisher for Stephen Ambrose, confessed plagiarist. And The Old Gray lady tolerated fabricated stories for over four years. Yet American civilization has not fallen beyond redemption. Plagiarists and liars are, for now, the exception, not the rule. As this story turns out, Ben Mezrich rules.

Who is telling the truth, McBride or
Torvalds?
12/23/2003 01:06 PM
Who is telling the truth here? Logic tells us that both of them aren't. On one hand, we have Darl McBride, the man who apparently confuses threats to litigate with titillate, saying that a small number of files (less than 10, unless you count each multiple times the way SCO does) in Linux were copied from Unix. On the other, we have Linus Torvalds, the father of the Linux revolution, saying he knows firsthand that's not so.

What Is Web Accessibility?

What Is Web Accessibility? 04/30/2004 07:00 PM
While the methods we use to create accessible websites can be complex, the essential principles are simple: consider the obstacles your site presents to users who approach it differently than you do, then remove as many of those obstacles as you can. Trenton Moss provides a quick overview.
