Josh and danah at M2M

Josh and danah at M2M

Josh and danah at M2M 04/09/2004 04:02 PM

Over at Many-to-Many, danah boyd, Social Software Extraordinaire, has joined us on a full time blogger. Whoo hoo! Also, guestblogging is Josh Schachter, creator of such socialwonderhunkies as GeoURL, Memepool, del.icio.us, and LOAF....

This is a GrokNews Entry: (what is grok?)

6A buying LJ could really fuck things up there.

danah boyd has pointed out that 6A is about blogging, while LJ has created it's own unique form of social computing - in a hyrbid balance between real-time status and messaging with community activity tracking and publishing.

The community and unique interaction that has grown up around LJ - has spawned look alikes (like Dead Journal) but also been hailed as (danah puts it so eloquently):

Live Journal is a culture, not simply a product or commodity that can be bought. From an outsider's perspective, it might appear as though they are similar properties - they are both blogging tools, right? Wrong.

Jump inside LJ culture. People who use LJ talk about their LJs, not their blogs. They mock bloggers who want to be pundits, journalists, experts. In essence, they mock the culture of bloggers that use Six Apart's tools. During interviews with LJ/Xanga folks, i've been told that MovableType is for people with no friends, people who just talk to be heard, people who are trying too hard.

LJ folks don't see LJ as a tool, but a community. Bloggers may see the ethereal blogosphere as their community, but for LJers, it's all about LJ. Aside from the ubergeek LJers, LJers don't read non-LJs even though syndication is available. They post for their friends, comment excessively and constantly moderate who should have access to what.
.
.
.
Movable Type is a product; LiveJournal is a community. Six Apart is seen as a community that provides tools, not culture.

I couldn't agree more.

The idea of Barak and Andrew Anker running LJ puts shivers down my spine. Oh my god - this is gonna be fun to watch.

Sort of like the social experiment we're doing with Marqui, or what's about to happen at aSmallWorld (both our clients.)

I'm reminded of a song:

"Something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear...."

The divide between 6A and LJ is more than just cultural. It's symbolic of the different approaches of technology, business models and ultimately digital lifestyle aggregation.

Will 6A evolve Typepad into a DLA or LJ? Will 6A build their own DLA platform or just buy us?

:-)

dAnAh is upset - again

dAnAh is upset - again 03/14/2005 05:09 PM

danah.gifSo it was about a year ago - that danah boyd got real upset at me for posting an image of a host of a party (we were putting on) having fun. She felt as though it wasn't a very professional way of promoting a 'professional' party.

I stated at the time how full of shit I thought that was - and I even caught danah herself - teh next night - having plenty of fun at some party - so I'm not sure how she differentiates when people can have fun and under what circumstances. Suffice is to say my definition ain't the same as hers. But it appears that she's mapping all her feminist hostility towards me - I guess cause I'm some loud mouthed, large MALE.

So first let me apologize for having a penis.

Now a year later here's danah - all upset at the guidelines for speakers at SXSW. It seems that "Culturally enforced etiquette has never been my thing".

marcCartoon.gif My - how the tables have turned.

So what's the difference between using my friend's photo to promote a party and "culturally enforcing" YOUR view of what YOU think is appropriate?

I say let SXSW do their thing, you do your thing and let's all just get along together!

But at least danah is getting caricatured. That's pretty dam coolio.

I've been caricatured - too.

Why danah didn't come to the party

Why danah didn't come to the party 02/12/2004 03:20 PM

Here's the picture that offended so many of the leading bloggers. Man these people are seriously uptight. Marc says he never pulled it. Right on. [Scripting News]

The cool thing about being at a conference where many of the people attacking you are here in meatspace - is that you can clarify and find out "what the hell it was that offended people do much?"

So when I talked to Cory (just now) he informed me that what really ticked off danah - was that the photo didn't necessarily present an appealing an environment for women to go and party.

The funny thing is that when I brought up danah's complaints to these women who were at the party (admittedly NOT from our industry or world) they broke out in laughter!  "What sort of hangup does she have?" they asked.

I expalined that danah was a young, brilliant researcher - who had worked with V-Day and other women's issues - folks understood why danah night be upset.

But that doesn't mean that women don't have fun at parties doing all sorts of crazy things.  In fact I could have SWORN I saw danah last night...... [oooops I'm telling no tales....]

I'm just saying I posted that photo for folks to 'think' that the party would be fun. If danah didn't, then guess what? - she didn't have to come.  And she didn't.

:-)

Danah calls the NYT out for pissing on
DNC bl0ggers
07/27/2004 05:51 AM
Danah boyd has written a fiery response to yesterday's NYT article on bloggers at the Democratic Convention ("Web Diarists Are Now Official Members of Convention Press Corps"), which began poorly by equating journalling with blogging, and went downhill from there:
By framing bloggers as diarists, the NYTimes is demanding that the reader see blogs as petty, childish and self-absorbed. They further perpetuate this view by pasting a picture of a youth on the front of the article to suggest that bloggers are all inexperienced and naive, further implying that their reports will not have the value of the more "adult" perspective of "real" journalists.

The entire spin of the article focuses on how bloggers are like children in a candy store - naive, inexperienced and overwhelmed by what is now available to them. The article focuses on the minutia of blogging, emphasizing that bloggers won't really cover the real issues, but provide the "low-brow" gossip. (I somehow suspect that the NYTimes is far more likely to cover what various attendees are wearing than the bloggers.) The article does proceed to share its stance on bloggers through the voice of one subject: "I think that bloggers have put the issue of professionalism under attack." (Not Jason Blair?)
