1-Click, Short-Click, Long-Click,

04/27/2004 05:27 PM
theodp writes "Not to be outdone by Amazon's 1-Click patent, Microsoft snagged a patent from the USPTO Tuesday for a Time based hardware button for application launch, which covers causing different actions to occur depending upon whether a button is pressed for a short period of time, a long period of time, or multiple times within a short period of time. So does pressing car radio buttons for different periods of time to change or set stations constitute patent infringement?" What about double-clicking? Seems like a fair amount of prior art. I know my caller ID box requires a "double-click" to delete phone numbers. Also, I may not remember correctly, but I was under the impression that Apple's famous "one-button" mouse allows you to fake a right mouse click if you hold down the button.

Tab to select menus in Mac browsers

Tab to select menus in Mac browsers 06/05/2005 11:57 PM
I have repeatedly finding myself turning to the otherwise unused Windows box on my desktop for filling in online forms. The primary reason has been the Tab behaviour in Web forms: on Windows, you can tab between text fields, menus, radio buttons, et al; on Safari/Firefox on Mac, you skip the menus entirely and have to reach for the mouse and click. And this contextual switch is costly.

Now apparently this is "fixed" by enabling System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Full keyboard access: "In windows and dialogs, press Tab to move the keyboard focus between: "Text boxes and lists only." Mea culpa.

I thought I'd clicked that long ago to no effect and a double-check finds that I was right. Despite the label "...and lists," it's only when you select "All controls" that tabbing to menus actually works in web forms. Mea culpa. Label culpa.

Useful Applescripts for coding PHP in
BBEdit
12/12/2003 07:48 PM
At work I spend a lot of time coding, which means I also spend a lot of time using BBEdit . Thankfully it's a fantastic program with excellent Applescript integration. As a PHP coder, I thought I'd share some of the great Applescripts that are out there to enhance your coding experience, and hopefully save you some time. VoidFil lPHP This is a PHP code completion script. Type the beginning of function name, hit F1 (or whatever key you've assigned it to), and it provides a list a potential matches (e.g. type html and you can choose from html_entity_decode, htmlentities or htmlspecialchars). Search php.net for selection It does what it says on the tin. Highlight a PHP function or keyword, hit the assigned key combination, and it fires up a browser window and searches through the manual on php.net for the function or keyword. Very useful if you've not got a PHP reference book handy. PHP Syntax Check Written by John Gruber (a former Bare Bones developer, so he obviously knows a thing or two), this flexible script can scan your document for PHP parsing errors (highlighting the problematic lines). The script can also replace the built-in HTML Document Syntax command, so it can check the syntax of your HTML also. Pretty nifty huh? What other Applescripts make your BBEdit life easier?

Macromedia - ColdFusion Support Forums - Cold Fusion/SQL Server programmer needed: I agree with just about everything here:

Please DON'T respond [...] If we have a tense moment or we say that we don't like the way you did some work and that it's not absolutely perfect and you're not the greatest programmer God ever put upon the earth and/or, we don't constantly stroke your ego and reassure you that you're wonderful every 5 minutes, you go off and sulk like a baby and when we try to call you to discuss it, you let the answering machine get it, listen to our message and then respond seconds later with a nasty mean email. Be a grown up, pick up the phone and talk about it.

Very long, but a great look into the mind of many programmers. At one time, I was probably one of them. Here's to hoping I'm not anymore. Via Anil Dash.
