HP's iPod Killer To Be... The iPod
01/08/2004 08:41 PMWhile everyone else is scrambling around trying to design an iPod
killer, the folks over at HP figured why bother? They've
gone and licensed
the technology directly from Apple and will start selling their
own branded version of the iPod - complete with iTunes. This is a bit
surprising, because you'd expect HP to just sign up for a
Microsoft-supported product instead. Still, any bets on whether or
not this device will be called the HPod?

04/06/2005 12:37 PMSony showed off the latest addition to its line of Walkman digital
music players Wednesday, the NW-HD5. While it is the fifth hard drive
player to be released by the company, it will be the first to see
worldwide distribution. Unlike Sony's previous units, the NW-HD5 is
designed to stand upright, similar to Apple's iPod.

$50 Microsoft iPod Killer? Feh!!
$50 Microsoft iPod Killer? Feh!!
05/28/2004 09:39 AMMicrosoft is apparently preparing to battle the iPod. Not satisfied
with decimating the Macintosh with undercut pricing (and, admittedly,
a more sound distribution model) Microsoft wants the iPod to have a
more Apple-like 5 percent market-share. But will it work? Yes, and
no.
Yes, because there is a significant percentage of people out
there who simply don't appreciate the stunning combination of design,
technology, and usability that is Apple. These people appreciate a
cheap price, languish in the familiarity of all things Microsoft, and
don't appreciate good design.

Walkman portable music device to feature a hard drive (subscription
required to read the article). Already dubbed an "iPod killer" by some
industry wags, the Walkman fails to impress Mossberg on several
points, including "confusing" user interface, "tedious" song-loading
process that took more than two hours to transfer 416 songs, and less
robust companion music download service that also sports more
restrictive rules than the iTunes Music store. "The iPod wins this
round, and remains champion," said Mossberg.

So we heard about the Microsoft $50 iPod-killer rumors yesterday,
too, but held off posting anything because it just sounded so out
there, and wanted to get some clarification. Glad we waited, because
Engadget has dug up the transcript of Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi and it's
clearly being misinterpreted by the different sources. I mean, read
this. You've got to be trying really hard to sift a $50 iPod killer
from Microsoft out of this.
I’ve spent time with a bunch
of hardware manufacturers who will launch hardware products when we
ship our service that will look and feel as good as the iPod
product.
...
It’s for people who really want to sort of look at music videos and
not just music, which is very powerful, we’ll have that offering. And
then a bunch of devices in between, little ones that cost 50 bucks and
you can go running with.

Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
Killer Mobiles for Killer Apps
02/01/2005 08:35 PM
Continuing my series on mobile platforms, I now think killer mobile
apps need mobile
devices designed like game consoles, meaning that it has one
or two slots
for application cartridges. Each cartridge contains one or
more applications.
Cellphones would come with a built-in cartridge containing the
phone app as well as
others.
Adding a cartridge adds new apps. Applications have two
modes: running and stopped.
The Next-App
button (aka
Appy button) activates (brings to front) each running apps in
turn. Some apps
can activate itself when an event fires (phone call
received). To see the list
of available apps, keep the Next-App button pressed for a second.
Eventually, app cartridges will be advance to become platform
cartridges, taking over
the full functionality of the mobile device to offer better
application platform services
than the one that came with the device (i.e. easy to use app
download service that auto-configures
apps for your device). If you don't like the built-in
calender, just stop it
and run a third-party calendar instead.

works using Radio Frequency (RF) technology instead of infrared, so it
doesn't require a line of sight to the iPod and can operate up to 60
feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's
South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new
iPod mini in your pocket?
Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors
iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be
giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have
to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it
to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the
highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many
songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep,
it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

The Next Mobile Killer App
The Next Mobile Killer App
02/01/2005 08:35 PM
The first killer-app for mobiles is the phone calls. I
believe static downloadable
audio contents such as music, audio books, and podcasts will be the
next killer-app.
Only design problem is sharing one battery for both critical (phone
calls) and casual
(listening to audio) uses which calls for smarter power management
and more powerful
batteries.
Great user experience and clever hardware design is where Apple
excels at so I expect
Apple to introduce iPod phones within a year or two at the latest.
Unfortunately, screen-based applications and dynamic audio
contents, driven by voice
browser technologies, will continue to struggle in the near future
due to tedious
user experience. Mobile killer apps must be available at the
user's fingertip,
not hidden behind a wall of patience.
