Tainted love: proprietary drivers and
the Linux kernel
04/28/2004 08:55 AMAs reported on Slashdot and elsewhere, Linux kernel hackers have
discovered that some proprietary modules running on the Linux kernel
have been "lying" about their licensing. Doing so allows those modules
to pass the automated license test done when they are loaded and thus
escape the "tainted kernel" messages the loader would otherwise
produce. NewsForge has gone behind the scenes and spoken to Linus
Torvalds and the CEO of one of the firms providing proprietary modules
for Linux to learn more about this story.

Robotics: Grow Up!
Robotics: Grow Up!
06/17/2005 07:12 PMLance Ulanoff of PC Magazine says, "Robotics:
Grow Up!" and then tells the robotics industry to gets its act
together. Lance does a great job in bringing to light what's wrong
with the robotics industry by recollecting his experiences with a
recent robotics trade show. Sadly, a lot of his points are completely
correct. The robotics industry appears to be mired in myopic, over-
schooled robotic geeks making piddly wall-detection robots that no one
wants nor can they sell. His solution? Simplify your robot and run a
cost-benefit analysis to see if it will sell. He says the Roomba
meets that cost-benefit criterion. Check out the article to find out
more about Lance's interesting observations.
IBM on Wireless Robotics
IBM on Wireless Robotics
12/31/2004 09:07 PMIBM has posted a new developerWorks
article on wireless robotics. The article explains some of the uses
of wireless robotics - either human control of non-autonomous robots
or
for inter-robot communication between cooperative autonomous robots.
It
further breaks cooperative robots in marsupial teams where there is a
mother-child relationship and competitive teams such as RoboCup soccer
robots. A list of pitfalls that may be encountered when using WiFi for
wireless robotics is also provided.

RadioShack's Vex robotics system
04/05/2005 07:03 PMMark Frauenfelder:

Today, Sam Mahserjian, a marketing manager for
RadioShack, came by today to show me the new Vex robotics design
system. I don't know much about hobby robotics, but I was really
impressed by what I saw here.
The $300 kit, which is already starting to go on sale at RadioShack
retail stores, has wheels, spin motors, gears, a programmable
microcontroller, servos, a radio receiver, a 6-channel radio
transmitter, and tons of Erector-set style hardware for building
robots. I like the fact that you are encouraged to cut and bend the
metal structural pieces to build you bots. They'll be selling sensors
and effectors in the coming months, and the platform will be open
enough that lead users will be able to develop and sell aftermarket
sensors and components for it.
I want to find out what my garage roboticist buddy, Gareth Branwyn thinks of Vex. I'm
going to ask him to write about it for Make.

New Robotics Group in Massachusetts
New Robotics Group in Massachusetts
03/28/2005 01:42 PMPete Gray is forming a
new robotics group in Massachusetts. If you're in the area and would
like to get together with other homebrew robotics people, visit the
Yahoo! Groups MassRobotics page
and sign up. At present they haven't settled on a name for the group
or
an initial meeting date. Pete says,
"At the moment, the group is
just
an 'online' entity, created just this month...although if enough
people
join up, I'm sure we'll become a 'real world' entity." You may
recognize Pete from his work with New
Micros on C compilers and
assemblers for the Motorola DSP56F80x that's used in the IsoPods.
Behavior-based Robotics and AI
Behavior-based Robotics and AI
08/17/2004 01:32 PM
David P.
Anderson of the Dallas Personal
Robotics Group has written a
combined review of two books recently added to the DPRG library,
"Cambrian
Intelligence The Early History of the New AI" by Rodney A.
Brooks and "Introduction
to Autonomous Mobile Robots" by Roland Siegwart
and Illah R. Nourbakhsh.
One of the books is based on the traditional
artificial intelligence approach to robotics while the other presents
Brook's behavior-based
subsumption approach.
This difference makes them ideal for a comparative review. Readers may
also wish to read the review of the Siegwart and
Nourbakhsh book posted last month here on robots.net. Readers
wishing to learn more about Brook's ideas should visit his online
archive of papers. Read on for the full review.

Zero-g Robotics on an Air Hockey Table
Zero-g Robotics on an Air Hockey Table
05/28/2004 03:48 PMWei-Min Shen and other
researchers from the USC Polymorphic Robotics Lab have been
looking for a way to simulate zero-g robotics so they can develop
autonomous robots that can assemble orbiting solar power stations and
do
other useful work in space. Their solution? Small robots called
"pucks"
that hover on a conventional air-hockey table. A new Nature article
summarizes their work. The USC PRL website offers video of the puck
robots at work including pucks assembling
scale girders (MPEG), docking with each
other (MPEG), and autonomously
navigating (MPEG).
Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics
Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics
02/01/2005 10:05 PMIBM DeveloperWorks
recently posted an article titled, "Migrating
from x86 to PowerPC: Robots and networked applications". The article
compares the PowerPC (or "Power Architecture" as IBM prefers to call
it
these days) to traditional Intel x86 and ARM processors. Migrating
from
one of these architectures to another is actually not too difficult if
the software is based on Linux which runs well on all three platforms.
Ultra-cheap methods of getting started with PowerPCs are mentioned,
such
as cannibalizing a Nintendo GameCube
console or using a Kuro Box. The
author, Lewin A. R. W. Edwards, has
published a book with more
information on the topic, called A
Cookbook for Open-Source Robotics and Process Control.

04/09/2005 06:21 PMDan Roganti writes,
"I'd like to introduce our new Robotics club here in Pittsburgh,
the
The Pittsburgh Robotics
Society. We're simply a group of people, mostly with engineering
backgrounds, that find this hobby rewarding and fun to do. I've
been involved with this hobby ever since high school, about 30yrs now.
Since we are still rather new, we haven't a competition planned for
this
year. Although, we do have an exhibit planned for SciTech
(Sep.30-Oct.9,2005)
at the Carnegie Science Center
You can read more about us on our website. We have monthly meetings on
the first saturday of the month." The group also has a mailing
list
based on Yahoo!.
