Israeli Mini UAVs Fight Terrorists

Israeli Mini UAVs Fight Terrorists

Israeli Mini UAVs Fight Terrorists 04/09/2004 04:01 PM

BBC News posted a small article today on several tiny UAVs that were revealed recently by Israeli Military. There are two "mini-drones", called Birdy and the Spy as well as two "micro-drones", the Mosquito and the Mosquito 1.5. The Mosquito UAV, the smallest of the group, has a wingspan of 33 cm and weighs just 250 grams. The UAVs are already being used by ground units to gather aerial intelligence on terrorist activities in the Palestinian territories. A Haaretz News article mentions these UAVs and there's also a Slashdot article on this one with the usual well-informed user comments. And, last, a mention of a planned, 100 gram UAV the size of a credit card can be found in an AFP press release from earlier this year.

Sliding Autonomy Demonstrated in UAVs

Sliding Autonomy Demonstrated in UAVs 07/27/2004 10:47 AM
A single human fighter pilot and a swarm of UAVs could work together to carry out a single mission according to a NewScientist.com story. The scenario has been simulated by QinetiQ in the UK. The human pilot supplies a goal, such as searching the area for enemy targets, and the UAVs carry it out autonomously. The system is a real-world example of the use of robots with sliding autonomy described in our July 23rd story

UAVs Tested for Border Protection 05/24/2004 03:52 PM
Officials at the US Homeland Security Department's Bureau of Customs and Border Protection want to use unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to patrol the US/Mexico border. Starting in June, they'll get their wish when their first two UAVs start partolling the Arizona border with Mexico. While they haven't decided on a UAV for wide deployment yet, their testing will begin with two fully autonomous Hermes 450 UAVs manufactured by Elbit Systems Ltd. in Haifa, Israel. More details are available in a recent Federal Computer Week article.

Autopilot is an open-source firmmare for autonomous model aircraft:
We're building a system for autonomous aerial vehicles for the hobbiest. The entire design and all software is available as Free Software, licensed under the GPL. The goal is to produce a do-it-yourself autopilot kit that anyone can build and fly.

Our initial target is 60 sized model helicopters and less than $500 in parts. So far we've been very successful -- one of our 2.2 boards has hovered a Concept 60 for several minutes at a time under attitude command from the safety pilot. It isn't totally autonomous yet, but the demonstration has proven that the inertial measurement unit (IMU) and Kalman filter approach work well.

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PM

Apple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.

Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times. Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the mini-guide.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts, check out our guide.

Iraqi women beg to be killed as American soldiers sodomize their children (link is an .rm file, the bit about mothers and children starts about 1:31), according to journalist Seymour Hersh who reports seeing unrele ased footage from Abu Ghraib. The question remains unanswered as to why he'll talk about it in a speech, but not publish it in the New Yorker. It's also worth asking, if these allegations are true, who else has seen this footage and why is it not being reported?

Mark Frauenfelder: Vice President Cheney is making bizarre threats about a possible terrorist attack unless he and President Bush are relected.
Vice President Dick Cheney on Tuesday warned Americans about voting for Democratic Sen. John Kerry, saying that if the nation makes the wrong choice on Election Day it faces the threat of another terrorist attack.

"It's absolutely essential that eight weeks from today, on Nov. 2, we make the right choice, because if we make the wrong choice then the danger is that we'll get hit again and we'll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States," Cheney told about 350 supporters at a town-hall meeting in this Iowa city.

Philippine Bows to Terrorists

Philippine Bows to Terrorists 07/12/2004 09:03 PM

First Spain and now Philippine.  Are they out of their minds?  At least South Korea managed to hold steady despite all the noise from the selfish peace and justice loving liberals.  They are selfish because they are ruining the country to satisfy their emotional and ideological needs.

I believe that the war against Iraq was unjustified but it's insane to give in to terrorists' demands regardless of circumstances.  Even if Philippine was going to pull out troops anyway, it should have waited to avoid appearing as if they were pulling out because of the terrorist's demands.

As to saving the lives of kidnap victims, I wonder what the Philippine government would have done if the terrorism and kidnapping took place within Philippine?  Give in?Rewarding terrorists will only encourage more terrorism.  What will they do when terrorists start popping up everyewhere because terrorism offers better result than demonstrations?  What?  Tell them to stand in a line so you can service them properly?

Is a civilian's life more sacred than a solder's life?  Bullshit.  On war against terrorism, everyone is on the frontline.  I am on the frontline of war against terrorism alongside my 10 year old son, my wife, my parents, my friends, and collegues.  We are fighting in our homes, neighborhoods, freeways, shopping malls, restaurants.  And the war is on 24 hours a day every day.  Terrorism can step in anywhere and any time if they think they can scare people into giving them what they want.

Giving in to terrorist demands, even if it's just for an ice cream cone or a few dollars, amounts to feeding a beast that can breed like rats.  Giving in to demands of terrorists far away amounts to thinking that one can run away from terrorism.  What a silly idea.  It's as silly as trying to build a wall around Middle East or banning Islamic religion.

In a disgraceful decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit has held that the detainees at the American base at Guantánamo Bay have no right to any due process or any relief from the judicial system. The ruling is based on the legal fiction that Guantánamo Bay is sovereign Cuban territory -- if that were actually true, the United States would have been expelled by the Cubans a long time ago. I predict that this set of rulings will come to be be seen as the Dred Scott rulings of the 21st century. The prisoners, most of whom have been in pens for over a year, remain officially "disappeared." They are not Prisoners of War, even though some of them were fighting with the government of Afghanistan, because that would confer too many rights on them. And they are not charged with criminal acts, because we don't have evidence that would stand up in a court of law. As the NYT said in an editorial today, they held incommunicado, in legal limbo, indefinitely. Everybody is entitled to have their claims heard by an impartial party. As the NYT suggests, it doesn't have to be the same rules and formality as the U.S civilian court system, but there have to be some rules, some process, and an impartial judge. Otherwise, it is tyranny. Power corrupts. This is not the American way. This is totally at odds with our traditions. If we let America act this way, the terrorists have won. They have turned us, into them.

Remember back in June when Barbara Streisand filed a lawsuit against Ken Adelman for photographing her home as part of his effort to photograph the entire west coast of the US for environmental purposes? Despite the fact that it was one of many thousands of photos, shows very little detail and was taken from public airspace, Streisand claimed it violated her privacy. Well, now a judge has looked at the suit, scoffed, and tossed it out, saying that the lawsuit actually infringed on Adelman's right to free speech. Once again, this is an example of trying to hide something online - and in the process drawing a lot more attention to it. If Streisand hadn't spoken up, very few people would even know the photo existed. Now, millions do - and it's all completely legal.
