Springer USV 04/09/2004 04:01 PM

The EPSRC announced funding for a research project that will build an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) called Springer to monitor pollutants in coastal and inland waterways. The autonomous robot boat will be electrically powered to avoid the possibility any possibility of adding to the pollutants it's trying to measure. The twin-hulled robot will be 3m long, 1.5m wide, and equipped with sensors able to measure conductivity, temperature, turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and other parameters. The robot will be built by the same researchers who developed the Hammerhead AUV which we've reported on before.

Autonomous Lawn Mower Competition

Autonomous Lawn Mower Competition 06/03/2004 12:31 PM
We just found out that the Institute of Navigation will be holding their first annual Autonomous Lawn Mower Competition on June 4th and 5th in Dayton, Ohio. With the competition just hours away, it's probably too late to get an entry together but you can still check the action at this year's event if you're in the area. In addition to looking for the faster autonomous lawn mower, robots will be judged on their construction cost and projected manufacturing costs of a production model.

MIT Press recently sent us their latest book on mobile robotics, Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots by Roland Siegwart of EPFL and Illah R. Nourbakhsh of CMU. The book provides a load of useful information on mobile robot locomotion and navigation issues. If you're struggling with the problem of how to make your robot get from point A to point B quickly and efficiently while avoiding obstcles, this book may have your answer. Read on for the full review.

No Autonomous Mining Robots, says Minsky

No Autonomous Mining Robots, says Minsky 04/16/2005 07:19 PM
According to a CNEWS story on the recent International Symposium on Mine Mechanization and Automation we are decades away from fully autonomous mining robots. Marvin Minsky, who addressed the conference, said that while it was possible such machines could be built, his forecast was gloomy: "There isn't anything in the laboratory right now that is very promising". He notes that one of the problems is that companies today are financially incapable of doing long term research and development because it doesn't turn a fast profit for the stockholders. On the upside, tele-operated mining equipment is feasible and may be a good intermediate step toward full autonomy.

Visual Searching by an Autonomous Robot

Visual Searching by an Autonomous Robot 04/20/2004 03:40 PM
When a robot needs to guard a region of space within a building, it's faced with solving geometric problems known as the Watchman Problem and the Art Gallery Problem. A new paper titled Online Searching by an Autonomous Robot (PDF format) describes the use of a KURT3D robot with a low cost 3D laser scanner to find realistic solutions to these problems. They test their work by putting the Linux-based robot through its paces in the great hall of Schloss Birlinghoven at Fraunhofer Institute for Autonomous Intelligent Systems. Video of the robot in action and 3D scans are available on the website.

Acon Power Runner PR-2500 iPod Battery 07/20/2004 02:29 PM

iPR-2500-and-iPod-A.jpg imageAlthough I don't see it on their website anywhere yet (and it may not even ever make it to the States), Taiwanese peripheral manufacturer Acon (makers of the "Cable Ass'y") has a new addition to their Power Runner line, the PR-2500, designed specifically for the Apple iPod. There are other external, rechargeable battery packs for the iPod -- and certainly ones that are better looking -- if anyone actually gets around to importing this one, it might be worth a glance. The 14-hour battery life and LED charge-state indicators are especially nice.

Female Mine Exploration Robot

Female Mine Exploration Robot 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "The grandmother of an engineering student at the University of Arizona has an old mine on her property. What could be inside? Would it be safe to explore it? She -- the student, not the grandmother -- decided it was better to send a robot inside and she teamed with another robotic enthusiast to build a radio-controlled rover to explore the mysteries of the old mine. The 18-inch-long and 7-inch-high robot can communicate with them via a 900 MHz radio modem and send them videos from inside the mine. Theoretically, the robot has a seven-mile range line-of-sight, but the team is not so sure. So the robot is also tied with a rope to pull it out of the mine if necessary, especially if it falls into a big hole. And did I mention this robot is a 'she'? They decided the machine was female "because the rover is independent, sometimes unpredictable and able to do the seemingly impossible" and they called her 'Green Meanie.'" You'll find more technical details and photos in Roland Piquepaille's blog. Jessica Dooley and Keith Brock, who built the robot, are both members of the UA Aerial Robotics Club.

David Hanson Speaks on Humanoid Robots

David Hanson Speaks on Humanoid Robots 11/19/2003 08:14 PM
The University of Texas at Dallas has announced that David Hanson will be speaking on the future of "Human-Like" Robots on Thursday, November 20 at 5:30 p.m., in Room 1.112 of the Conference Center on the UTD campus in Richardson, Texas. The talk is free and open to the public. David Hanson is best known for K-Bot, the human-like robot head that has prompted many a bad pun here on robots.net. Hanson's robot head is intended to be a duplicate of his girl friend's head. The head is so life-like that some feel it may be a good test of Masahiro Mori's "Uncanney Valley" theory.
