Quote of the Day by Richard Clarke

Quote of the Day by Richard Clarke

Quote of the Day by Richard Clarke 04/09/2004 04:01 PM

All too typically buried at the bottom of a Washington Post story by Barton Gellman on Richard Clarke's new book, Against All Enemies : Inside the White House's War on Terror--What Really Happened, is a great quote summarizing all that is wrong with George Bush and his War on Iraq: "Any leader whom one can imagine as president on September 11 would have declared a 'war on terrorism' and would have ended the Afghan sanctuary [for al Qaeda] by invading," Clarke writes. "What was unique about George Bush's reaction" was the additional choice to invade "not a country that had been engaging in anti-U.S. terrorism but one that had not been, Iraq." In so doing, he estranged allies, enraged potential friends in the Arab and Islamic worlds, and produced "more terrorists than we [can] jail or shoot." "It was as if Osama bin Laden, hidden in some high mountain redoubt, were engaging in long-range mind control of George Bush, chanting 'invade Iraq, you must invade Iraq,' " Clarke writes....

Moore+Clarke+Fermi=?

Moore+Clarke+Fermi=? 05/10/2004 04:42 AM
It has been suggested that Moore's Law could hold for about 600 years before we hit the maximum amount of computability there is.

Clarke's Third Law says that "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".

Fermi's Paradox asks "where the hell are all intelligent creatures of the universe?"

You know, 600 years to take on the entire universe is not a long time. In fact, it is a laughably short time. And, if there's any intelligent life anywhere else in the universe, wouldn't they have discovered it already, meaning that we would already be a part of a gigantic supercomputer? And would we even notice, if we were a part of it?

And if we're the first sentient beings to succeed in building a supercomputer the size of the universe, will it all end in a massive Bluescreen of Death in the year 2604?

Now there's something to lose your sleep on...

Arthur C. Clarke on tsunami

Arthur C. Clarke on tsunami 12/27/2004 03:36 PM
Xeni Jardin: On his website, author and inventor Sir Arthur C. Clarke -- who lives in Sri Lanka -- says:
Thank you for your concern about my safety in the wake of Sunday’s devastating tidal wave. I am enormously relieved that my family and household have escaped the ravages of the sea that suddenly invaded most parts of coastal Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction.

But many others were not so fortunate. For hundreds of thousands of Sri Lankans and an unknown number of foreign tourists, the day after Christmas turned out to be a living nightmare reminiscent of The Day After Tomorrow.

More from Clarke... Richard Clarke terrorizes the White House The vice president commented that there was "no great success in dealing with terrorists" during the 1990s, when you were serving under President Clinton. He asked, "What were they doing?"It's possible that the vice president has spent so little time studying the terrorist phenomenon that he doesn't know about the successes in the 1990s. There were many. The Clinton administration stopped Iraqi terrorism against the United States, through military intervention. It...

After three days of hysteria that Whistling Straits might be the toughest test ever at a major, Clarke birdied the first four holes Thursday in the PGA Championship and didn't stop until he had a 7-under 65, setting the tone for an opening round of mild wind, shorter tees and scores that more closely resembled the Booz Allen Classic.

Ramez Naam, group program manager for MSN Search, declined to say whether or not search functions would be integrated directly into Microsoft's Internet Explorer. But a Microsoft executive, who asked to remain unnamed, told me that his company had recently reconstituted its browser development organization. "Microsoft effectively disbanded the Internet Explorer group after killing Netscape," he said. "But recently, they realized that Firefox was starting to gain share and that browser enhancements would be useful in the search market."

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel
by Susanna Clarke

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel
by Susanna Clarke
03/30/2005 09:05 PM

January was a rough month for me and I needed a break from all the "heavy" nonfiction I usually read, so I picked up Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, a well-received fantasy novel. I'm normally not much of a fantasy reader, but I was in the mood for something fanciful and besides, JS&MN isn't really fantasy. It contains fantastic things like magicians, Raven Kings, and faeries but belongs more to the 19th century British novel genre...more Jane Austen than JRR Tolkien. (Clarke lists Austen as her favorite author on the book's site.)

And it's just plain good, whatever the genre. The simple bold cover drew me in (it looks like the font used is a close cousin to Caslon Antique), but the plot kept me in "I can't put it down" mode until I had finished. A surprise was how clever and funny Clarke's writing was...I found myself laughing out loud several times at the book's cutting deadpan wit. The book weighs in at ~780 pages, but my only disappointment upon finishing was that the story was over...I felt like I'd just gotten to know the characters and wanted to follow them on all sorts of adventures. Luckily, Clarke is working on a sequel of sorts, according to the book's web site:

The next book will be set in the same world and will probably start a few years after Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell finishes. I feel very much at home in the early nineteenth century and am not inclined to leave it. I doubt that the new book will be a sequel in the strictest sense. There are new characters to be introduced, though probably some old friends will appear too. I'd like to move down the social scale a bit. Strange and Norrell were both rich, with pots of money and big estates. Some of the characters in the second book have to struggle a bit harder to keep body and soul together. I expect there'll be more about John Uskglass, the Raven King, and about how magic develops in England.

The first chapter is online if you'd like to read it and Metacritic has several reviews.

P.S. For fun, here are Amazon's Statistically Improbable Phrases for this book: new manservant, madhouse attendants, fairy roads, practical magician.

Richard Perle, Prince of Darkness,
strikes again

Richard Perle, Prince of Darkness,
strikes again
03/11/2003 06:17 PM
According to Joe Conanson of Salon, Richard Perle, the Prince of Darkness and head of the Defense Advisory Board, yesterday called Seymour Hersh a terrorist in an interview with CNN. This was because of an article that Hersh had written for the New Yorker detailing Perle's business dealings, where he has been taking "investments" from defense contractors ($20 million from Boeing alone) and apparently has been trying to extort money from the same Saudis he has been attacking publicly. Seymour Hersh is the journalist who broke the My Lai story almost 25 years ago, and he has been doing some of the finest post-911 national security reporting in the New Yorker. Not always what the Bush administration wanted reported, but I am not aware of any challenges to his facts. Talk about a despicable and cynical use of 911. Profit from your position as head of the Defense Advisory Board, then call people reveal your business dealings "terrorists." Add to that the damage Perle has already done to NATO, and you have to ask, how more damage will the Bush administration let this man do to our country? They should remember, it wasn't people on the left who nicknamed Perle the Prince of Darkness, it was his fellow Republicans in the Reagan administration.
