This web tool is designed to help teachers and students create RSS feeds for aggregating news stories from 4500 sites in Google News, that are related to curriculum topics and issues. The resulting feed addresses and utilizes a feed builder constructed by Justin Pfister and can be placed in your news aggregator such as Bloglines or your own RSS news aggregator software. Many thanks to Justin for his exceedingly useful tool. Also, this web tool was inspired by the work of Will Richardson, author of RSS: A Quick Start Guide for Educators. He's responding to an article explaining why start-up companies are missing an opportunity if they don't produce products for the Mac. He goes beyond the original argument, however, to explain how developers, especially fledgling companies, can leverage MUGs to build a foundation for their efforts, and goes on to detail two examples of such a strategy.

When Firefox add ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to choose an external RSS reader.

So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.

Michael Koziarski rose to the challenge and created F eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed: // protocol. Which means that even though the extension was designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon. Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the Mac.

Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR" icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon. Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel" wizard to subscribe to it.

A case of art imitating life, perhaps: Much as Rollie McFly has to square off against King Thorax in Pangea Software's game Bugdom, the PC conversion of Pangea Software's game at the center of a simmering David and Goliath controversy. Independent PC game publisher Ideas from the Deep alleges that PC and console giant Take Two Interactive is pirating the PC version of Bugdom. Rather than bringing a civil action against the larger publisher, has reported the situation to the FBI.

I finally got around to sorting through and captioning the photos I took of the How Berkeley Can You Be? parade and Art Car fest that was held in Berkeley at the end of September. Going through the pictures reminded me of some of the reasons I like living in Berkeley so much. Sure, people regularly overdo political correctness here, and there were a lot of "Only in Berkeley" groups and moments in the parade, but on the whole it was an amazing display of the diversity, creativity and sense of humor that make this a fun place to live. There were also a lot of self-mocking groups poking fun at Berkley. I love it when people retain the ability to laugh at themselves, and it is a highly desirable quality for living in Berkeley. Luckily, it is also a frequently displayed quality. One of the stars of the parade was the Sashimi Tabernacle Choir, an art car from Houston Texas, of all places. 5 miles of wiring that must have taken months of work to put together, all for a bunch of plastic fish and lobsters who sing while being conducted by large crustacean. It sounds silly, but it was wonderful. I could track its progress down University Avenue by the gales of laughter is spawned as it passed by. After the parade, people crowded around for hours and were treated to special performances by the Choir. I got some good photos. If it comes to your town, don't miss it.
