Turned commenting back on

Turned commenting back on 04/09/2004 04:01 PM

I spent several hours trying to install James Seng's CAPTCHA comment spam reduction MT hack, but didn't have any luck. Seng isn't answering questions any more about his hack, but apparently (undocumented), it requires a newer version of GD.pm than the antiquated 1.38 version that my webhost, phpwebhosting.com, has installed. I tried convincing my webhost to upgrade their version of GD, but they declined, and when I tried to do a private install, I found so many other packages that also needed upgrading that in the end I gave it up. The problem with comment spam is that I always feel like my site has been defaced, and I wonder why someone would go to all the trouble when I remove the comment spam on a daily basis. I have to remind myself that it isn't anything personal, the spammer hasn't even been to my site, it is just a script. So back to the old Spambad system until MT 3.0 ships. At least it has sharpened by SQL skills, devising a new SQL statement every day to erase the 90 spam comments while keeping the two valid comments. In any case, please feel free to comment again....

RSS & Commenting

RSS & Commenting 02/17/2003 12:16 PM

I have this idea for adding commenting information to RSS feeds. This would allow the writers of news aggregators to have forms built into their software where readers could send comments to the site their reading without having to visit the site. Below is an example of what I'm thinking.

<comments:method>XML-RPC</comments:method>
<comments:uri>http://yoursite.com/comments.php</comments:u
ri>
<comments:fields>
 <comments:field value="name" isRequired="true"/>
 <comments:field value="email" isRequired="true"/>
 <comments:field value="url"/>
 <comments:field value="body" isRequired="true"
maxlength="1024"/>
</comments:fields>

Messages could be sent any number of ways, including (in order of my preference): XML-RPC, HTTP-POST, POST, and HTTP-GET. There would have to be a standardized naming of fields. For instance, in the case of the above example, the user is asked to enter their email address. The standard would have to specify a singular name that would be understood to be email address, like email, so that code writers don't have to be sniffing for email addresses if the aggregator program decides to send it as contact instead.

The implementation could be as simple or as complex as the site owner wanted. Error checking in the aggregators could alleviate some headaches on the blog's end. If a site wanted to require registration, they could require a username and password field in the <fields> section above.

Of course, now that people could comment through their aggregators you would need to have a way getting your comments back to the aggregator. This could be done in three ways as I see it.

  1. The blog could run a seperate RSS feed containing their comments. Some blogs already do this (Phil Ringnalda, for instance).
  2. The RSS Commenting specification could include a method of showing comments inline in current RSS feeds (this would be best, I think).
  3. More tech-savvy sites could allow aggregators to set up connections to them (XML-RPC client/server perhaps) and request all the comments for a particular post. I think this method would be more work than neccessary.

Please leave me a comment below or drop me an email and let me know if you think this idea is good, or even if you think it's stupid. Also, if you know of the best way to propose such a thing to the RSS Working Group, let me know. I'm going to write up some more ideas and specifications, maybe even a DTD or Schema.

Revamps to Commenting and RSS

Revamps to Commenting and RSS 02/15/2003 08:39 PM

In my previous post, I asked that users who requested my old RSS file in news aggregators update to the new link. Phil left a comment which raised a good point. From what he said, I have changed my error handling to return an HTTP message of 301 Moved Permanently and redirect to the new RSS feed when the old feed is requested. I've tested the results with Syndirella and it worked. I could tell it worked because my access logs showed my request as one for the new URL, and not the old URL, even though I requested the old one. In the past I would have received an error code as well. However, let me know if you have any problems.

Also new, I completed the non-dynamic commenting system. Most of you will never see it because your browser supports the dynamic version, but this will affect a few people.

I have been getting some negative e-mail on us locking down our commentng system, we now require you to register with Typekey. I want to explain why we had to lock down the comments. I was spending 20 to 30 minutes a day removing spams that contained adult or inappropriate content. The spammers where using commenting programs that would put several 100 comments per spamming run places throughout our 2500 articles. We had a tool to help us clean those comments up but it took entirely to much time.

The new system is enable through a service called Typekey. Once you are registered with Typekey you will be able to post comments on any Movabletype 3.0 or greater webllog. They have a very clear policy that they will not disclose any more information than what you allow in your profile. If you look at my profile you will see that I have opted to allow you to see a variety of information about me. All of that information is OPTIONAL.

No they do require you to divulge a minimal amount of information when you signup but the main point is to verify posters identities. We do not require your e-mail address be posted on the website. This is to keep spam out of your inbox when spammers come harvesting e-mail address's.

I encourage our readers to forward me any concerns you have directly to geek at geeknewscentral.com

Pay To Have Your CDs Turned Into MP3s 01/26/2004 12:42 PM
I've mentioned before that I'm still a bit behind on using digitized music, as it seems like quite a chore to rip all my CDs. It's been something of an ad hoc process. Every once in a while, when I want to listen to a specific CD and have the music stored on my computer, I'll rip that CD. However, ripping them all (over 1,000) seems like quite a process. That said, I'm still not sure I'd be interested in a service that would rip your CDs into MP3s for you. Still, it appears plenty of people are interested and are paying about a dollar per CD to have the process done. While the service was originally intended for DJs, many people are apparently signing up to have their personal collections ripped as well. Of course, you have to wonder how sustainable this business is. You certainly aren't going to have many repeat customers.

Psychic TV turned on again 09/06/2004 05:23 AM
David Pescovitz: skull_stickerTransmedia artist Genesis P-Orridge has reactivated his seminal industrial/trance band Psychic TV to tour Europe and the United States beginning this month. Last winter, I was fortunate enough to catch a rehearsal and they sounded fabulous--tight, energized, and... happy. (Douglas Rushkoff was playing keyboards with the group for several dates late last year but will not be joining this particular "de-tour.")

Genesis is quite a sight these days as well. As part of the Breaking Sex art exploration he's immersed in with his other half, Lady Jaye, the two received identical breast implants on Valentine's Day 2003. Gen's new mantra? "S/he is Her/e."

How Amazon Turned A Profit

How Amazon Turned A Profit 01/28/2004 03:38 PM
The most amazing thing, to me, about Jeff Bezos was that he never (publicly, at least) took all the post-boom Wall Street naysayers to task for completely changing their minds in 2000 and 2001. For years, Wall Street was telling Bezos to grow faster and faster and not to worry about profits - and he did so. Then, suddenly, as the dot com bubble collapsed, they started yelling at him "but where are your profits?" even though they were the same ones who were telling him to forget about profits the month before. To his credit, Bezos (calmly) appears to have turned the big ship Amazon around, and is now meeting the profitability standard that Wall Street now values. While there are a ton of stories talking about Amazon's earnings announcement (yes, they were profitable for the year last year), the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has a much more interesting article talking about how Amazon has managed to change over the years to make all of this possible.

Earthlink Wireless Gets BlackBerry 7250

Earthlink Wireless Gets BlackBerry 7250 04/13/2005 08:26 PM

Earthlink Wireless is now offering the BlackBerry 7250, probably most notable for being one of the few BlackBerries with Bluetooth. It's still weird to think of Earthlink as a wireless carrier, but I was checking it out to see whose services they are reselling (it still doesn't say, although it's got to be Sprint or Verizon since the 7250 is listed as CDMA) and they've apparently been doing it to some extent since 2000. They didn't really get serious about it until this year, though, when they partnered with SK-Telecom.

In fact, since Verizon just got the 7250 a couple of months ago, I'm betting they resell Verizon. This post is short on facts but rich in the process of discovery.

Siemens SK65 With Blackberry Email 08/02/2004 08:31 AM

seimens_sk652.jpg image

Seimens has unveiled a very interesting phone design, aimed at business users, but certainly appealing to the IM- and SMS-heavy set. The SK65's defining feature is a central swivel with reveals a QWERTY keyboard, made all the more appealing with the inclusion of Research in Motion's Blackberry push email, making the unit a potentially very effective corporate communication device (it even makes phone calls!)

Keeping its business-friendly target in mind, though, there is no camera, MP3 player, or the like. The SK65 is all-business, but sort of naughty secretary business, if I do say so myself.

Ogo Vs. Blackberry 09/15/2004 03:20 PM

ogo_vs_blackberry.jpg imageSo the AT&T Wireless Ogo isn't coming out today - I think we can chalk that up to an overanxious rep - but it should be out soonish, from what I can gather. In the meantime, check out this comparison shot. It's a little bigger than I was hoping, but if it really just costs $100 I'm not going to complain about a little extra size. Besides, that might make the keyboard more useful.

And if AT&T lets people install their own software on it, it's got an even better chance to give Danger a run for the Sidekick money. I have my fingers crossed, which made typing this really hard.

BlackBerry Thumb 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

blackberry_thumb.jpg imageFor now, you can file the 'Blackberry Thumb' issue along side the folder where you would have kept your worries about cellphone radiation, had you not forgotten them since that tumor pressed too firmly into your hippocampus. Sure, dinking around on thumbboards probably isn't exactly the optimal use of your opposable digits, but it's likely no worse than the dreaded "Nintendo Thumb" that struck down a whole generation of good typists, who now are cursed with occasional involuntary run-ons of 'ABABSELECTSTART.' Until this doctor in the UK can actually point to a documented case of someone suffering from tendentious, I think I'll keep promoting the thumbboard as one of the best mobile input devices we have ABABSELECTSTART available. Om Malik writes......

Amdist all the hoopla around Motorola' new products, one news which got little mention was the deal struck between Moto and Blackberry for MPx. By now, Blackberry has signed-up most major phone makers, and has worked out plans to embed its software/service on all sorts of SmartPhone OS platforms. We are looking at a defactor wireless email platform? Perhaps!

But this clearly is not good news for well, Good Technology! Motorola's MPx was supposedly going to be an exclusive Good deal, but I guess not. And those smart VCs who have pumped in nearly $250 million into wireless email must be reaching for their large box of Tums! Good alone accounts for $146 million of the total.

My theory on this is, that by launching an aggresive marketing/hype campaign, Good galvanized those meek canadians into action. Had that not happened, RIM probably would have kept doing what they were doing - selling devices and service and growing at a nice Canadian pace. Threatened, they went on and signed up all these people. Voila! They are in good place, Good in not!

[gigaom]

I totally agree with Om.

This is an example where patents and VCs have really FUDed the landscape and all of a sudden a sleeping Tiger has been clued in and appears to grok it now.

I just hate the concept of the mini-keyboard being patented - but let's just get on with making sure it's baked into all sorts of devices - as my chubby fingers will NEVER learn to thumb type, graffitti or whatever.

I'm a QWERTY keyboard guy - till I die - I got no choice about it. And there's no way in hell I'm typing SMS messages with a phone pad....

Anyway - congrats to Blackberry - not let's get on with it.
