Campus to create supercomputer by
smartmob, this Saturday
04/09/2004 04:01 PM

A class project is now coming to fruition. Many people with laptops are expected to arrive on the University of San Francisco campus to smartmob together a supercomputer. FlashMob I is based on an application and architecture created by a computer science class, along with a sense of distributed computing.

FlashMob I is the brainchild of a group of graduate students at USF studying supercomputers. Our hope at the beginning of the semester was to build a supercomputer that would make the Top 500 list of supercomputers. After some back-of-the-envelope calculations, we concluded that we were about 100 computers short of having a good shot. Someone raised their hand and said: "We could post a message on Craig's List and get a hundred people to just show up." Thus the idea of FlashMob Computing was born.

Canucks who arent chronically watching any of the cool programming on Teletoon might miss out on the promos informing us that we too get to join the rest of the civilized world and watch The Clone Wars on our very own televisions (yeah, believe it or not, we do have electricity in our igloos). Check out their site for scheduling information for the first ten episodes. Interestingly, the TV spots are advertising all twenty episodes, so we may actually see the second set along with everyone else.

WTF-2 in London this Saturday 05/24/2004 04:44 AM
The next WTFCon is in London this Saturday: it's a one-day convention devoted to hackery subjects.
* An open space gathering and conference of various groups, projects, people, and organisations active and interested in creating a better world.

* Action and not just talk. Too many social forums and gatherings result with little or no outcome. Come and propose and gain support for actions during Soho Summit, ESF, G8, GDR etc.

* An assembly of gifts and needs: tell everyone what your projects are all about, what they have to offer, and what they need. Together we have everything. Let's self-organise and share!

* About working together, many of us have shared principles despite our diverse goals. No more either or!

Saturday Night Linkage... 03/13/2003 10:16 AM

I'm still reeling from writing that last post in a blast of confused and desperate-to-get-it-out-there enthusiasm. And I still have no idea whether it's total bunk or not. So I'm going to throw out my linklog for the evening and leave it at that. Tomorrow I may write about any of the following things that have been going on:

  • Giving a statement to the police about my burglar;
  • Getting tickets to see The Bangles live in concert;
  • Spotting Jake Gyllenhaal in Chalk Farm tube;

But all that's for tomorrow. Tonight, you must simply accept limited microcontent votage with a little snide commentary. This is what's going down:

  • Google's Memory Upgrade
The relationship between Google/Blogger and the Memex as explored by Steven Johnson. And in the process, Mr Webb's t houghts are referenced.
  • Let them hate as long as they fear
"So oderint dum metuant it is. I could talk about the foolishness of such blatant bullying or about the incredible risks, in a multiethnic, multiracial society, of even hinting that one might encourage a backlash against Hispanics."
  • We blogs are all blah blah blah
From the people who brought you, "God, isn't it annoying how the world is still round?!" and "Don't you find it infuriating how light, you know, works?!"
  • Camino 0.7 is released
Only interesting to those of you with OSX of course. Camino is the new name for the browser-previously-known-as-Chimera.

Office work on a Saturday

Office work on a Saturday 04/17/2004 07:11 PM

I went in to the office today at noon, because I'm way behind on work. Way behind.

I started cleaning out my in-box. It had 998 emails in it, some dating as far back as January. (I don't file or delete emails until I've had a chance to act on them, if they require action, or, if I've had time to digest their import if they're just FYI messages). 998 emails.

Ugh...

As I was deleting and filing emails, I did a bunch of other stuff like adding contacts to my contacts DB, creating proposals and servicing accounts.

Update: been working for 5 hours, down to 740 emails in my inbox.

Update: been at it for 6.5 hours. Down to 668 emails in my inbox. Created 3 proposals, one contract, and two sales flyers. Time for a beer.

Eating on a Saturday night

Eating on a Saturday night 04/17/2005 06:52 PM
I've been doing a fairly good job of eating at lots of yummy places while here in Paris. Obviously I've been doing a fairly crappy job of documenting those meals, mostly out of sheer laziness. But last night we decided to eat in for a change, and to soften the repeated blows my wallet has taken during this trip. To turn the documentation tide, I present a photo of what we had for dinner on Saturday night. For our shopping, we decided we'd head to La Grande Epicerie Paris, the amazing food market at The Bon Marché -- one of Paris' grand department stores. We started in the wine section and being, in reality, poser gourmands and wine afficionados, we just grabbed two bottles that looked good and tried to escape before the woman started speaking to us in French about wine. My French class hasn't gotten to that level of interaction yet, and I wasn't up to the challenge. The take? A half bottle of Domaine Pradelle Crozes-Hermitage, 2002 (white) and a full size 2000 Saint-Joseph from Ferraton Père & Fils. Where they good? Seemed so to us. We're pretty much happy with anything from the Rhône. Next stop, the meat counter where we procured some mousse de canard. Somehow I managed to leave it out of the nice photo, so here it is just tossed on a plate. Then, on to the cheese counter! Here we were at a loss as there were just too many cheeses to choose from. Though I have French Cheeses: The Visual Guide to More Than 350 Cheeses from Every Region of France, it was no use among the vast selection (because I didn't have it with me and hadn't memorized it all, yet...). So I used my every-improving French to explain our predicament to Madame la Fromagière: (In French, sort of)Madame, we do not know the cheeses well of France. Is it possible that you make a selection of three cheeses for us to know more the cheese? Of course!, she replied, quite happy to be put to such a test. So she asked a few more questions and we ended up with a Brie de Meaux, a Comté Rivoire, and a bouton Charolai which was a button of a lovely aged goat cheese. They were all excellent, and Madame chose well for us. The Charolai was my favorite new cheese in a long time. We had also picked up a saucisson sec aux myrtilles, a dry sausage with a blueberry(!) coating. It was good, but didn't have much blueberry flavor. And of course, the requisite baguettes upon which to spread our yummy cheese and mousse. It was tasty and easy and I have to say, I want to do it again very soon!

Saturday is Cal Day (and bakesale day)
in Berkeley
04/17/2004 02:23 AM
This Saturday is Cal Day, when UC Berkeley has an open house all day. Although it is supposedly geared towards prospective students, it's lots of fun for everybody. For the autodidact, there are lots of free lectures and demonstrations. I'd recommend Professor Tyrone Hayes' lecture, Genetically Modified Weeds, Hermaphroditic Frogs, and Premature Babies, if you can get yourself to the Valley Life Sciences Building by 9 AM. Cal Day is also a great place to bring kids for the day. There are lots of fun hands-on activities for kids of all ages. We went last year (in the rain) and had a blast. Based on last year's experiences, I would especially recommend Activities in Archaeology at the Archaeological Research Facility, 2251 College Ave. for elementary school age children. The university students were very sweet, and they really set things up nicely for kids, with lots of interesting activities, and the kids get to take the home the "artifacts" they discover. The parents can watch hand tools being made from obsidian and flint, just as our ancestors did 10,000 plus years ago. Another good pick is visiting the usually pricey Art Museum or Lawrence Hall of Science, both of which are free for the day. It would be hard to go wrong taking a kid to Cal Day. As a final bonus, MoveOn activists are holding their Bake Sale for Democracy Saturday, and there are 6 bake sales being held within a mile of campus. Rumor has it that the founders of MoveOn will be at Kerry's Benvenue Bake Sale for part of the day. Highly recommended....

San Francisco: Saturday morning...

San Francisco: Saturday morning... 08/14/2004 01:20 PM

So I kind of slacked off yesterday, if truth be told. Not a lot of exploring, not a lot of drenching myself in San Francisco - just a fair amount of doing things I like to do that I don't really often get the opportunity to do. So I went to see two films (the other one was the Manchurian Candidate - much recommended), bought a couple of books, a case for my iPod, had a really nice Clam Chowder and portion of Fish and Chips at San Francisco's best American restaurant and sat in Starbucks for a bit (thanks Anil) starting to catch up on all the cool stuff that's been going on around the web in the million years since we started working on representing programming on Radio 3.

Today I think is going to be more about getting some of the flavour of the city - or at least starting to ramp up my mucking around with local geeks. Hopefully I'm going to go see Danah's kittens in the next couple of hours, go see Heather at Taco Bell around lunchtime, and then go see a movie with Leslie this afternoon.

But all of this is really preamble to the main event which should be happening this evening - a drink and catch-up with local geeks at San Francisco's famous Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar from 8.30 this evening. Come along if you can. It'll be fun...

Big WLAN on Campus

Big WLAN on Campus 01/06/2005 03:14 PM
Colleges are the bleeding edge of WLAN technology: I wrote this piece for Mobile Pipeline (my first for them) which started out as a more general best practices article for giant WLANs, and morphed into an article about college WLANs. Why? As I explain in the story, giant WLAN enterprises don't want to talk on or off the record about what they're doing. Academic institutions are happy to oblige. Schools also have the disadvantage of having to support many, many generations of equipment and operating systems. You can't tell a professor to take a flying leap, and some schools may still have five-year-old laptops and desktops that still have to be integrated. It's clear that 802.1X is the next big trend for both schools and enterprises. It solves many problems while adding tremendous policy flexibility. Using 802.1X and L2TP means that you can have smaller VLANs that are segregated by policy, group, or even randomly to balance users among VLANs....

Mass-deletion art show on Saturday in LA

Mass-deletion art show on Saturday in LA 06/17/2005 03:34 PM
Cory Doctorow: This Saturday, Monochrom (crazy Austrian net-artists) continue their rampage across the West Coast with "Experience The Experience Of A Magnetism Party" at Los Angeles's Machine Project:
Accompanied by contemporary alternative mainstream rhythms and using several heavy-duty neodym magnets, monochrom will delete all the data carriers that can be found. Naturally the public is invited to bring data carriers themselves.

The destruction of magnetic storage media is a form of destruction that can reasonably be called unspectacular. But it is important. Our society collects and collects and collects. The hard drives are full. However, we can also dispense with the bourgeois-humanist criticism of the "information flood", this maelstrom that is said to attack the printed word. The Magnetism Party is therefore an attempt to actively come to terms with one aspect of the information society that is almost completely ignored by our epistemological machinery.

Delete is just another word for nothing left to lose.

Saturday in LA: Robot Golem Voodoo Art 01/23/2004 12:10 AM
sixspace in Los Angeles opens a new show of robots-as-golems art this Saturday -- from artists Martin Ontiveros and Donovan Crosby. Gallery co-owner Caryn Coleman says:

"The reception for Risen is Saturday, January 24th, from 7-10 pm. The show continues through February 28th. Risen explores the themes in differing folklore: Ontiveros (Portland) depicts the deed-doer Golem from Jewish folklore with his signature-style robots in his paintings on wood and bottles while Crosby (Los Angeles) takes haunting tales from voodoo tales to create a little black magic in her lush work. The title Risen is derived from the rising souls in Golem's quests or the rising of evil, such as zombies or spells, in voodoo.

"Fifteen years after it first hit shelves, PRANKS! remains one of the most important and relevant books ever to emerge from RE/Search's outre publishing house. In today's current surreal political landscape, a well-executed prank can do much more than yelling theater in a crowded fire!

In that spirit, RE/Search and The Lab present The Pranks! Festival (Saturday, 12/6). The Pranks! Festival will celebrate ten Bay Area artists who appeared in PRANKS! Through art exhibits, panel discussions, and chaotic socialization, we will fete the fearless Situationist spirit that San Francisco's pranksters embody. This is a rare opportunity to engage with prankster pioneers Mark Pauline of Survival Research Laboratories (SRL), Monte Cazazza, Bruce Conner, Paul Mavrides, Mark McCloud, Mal Sharpe (yes, of Coyle & Sharpe), Fluxus anti-artist Robert Delford Brown, John Trubee, tattoo guru Don Ed Hardy and Jello Biafra (tent.)."

London on a Saturday = Hell on bloody

07/03/2004 04:39 PM

You go away for two days and all hell breaks loose. But then again, who cares - it's someone else's hell, right? Completely randomly and spontaneously on Wednesday I decided that I'd go up and visit my family for a couple of days to try and get some mental perspective. Two days with my brother and beautiful views and use of a car and some decent food and totally quiet sleeping environments. Terrifyingly calming. See if you can guess the common feature of the following photos:

That's right! They don't have any bloody fucking people in them! Arriving back in London on a Saturday afternoon in Midsummer was like being stuck in a bloody battery farm after being free range. I'm finding it harder and harder to deal with all .. the .. bloody .. morons .. milling around London at two miles an hour, holding hands while walking about three feet apart from each other, glancing in each other's eyes longingly and casually swinging their pastel shopping bags around while behind them fifty or sixty people are stuck at their pedestrian snail's pace - each and everyone thinking so loud it must be practically audible, "What the fuck is wrong with you people?! And would there be a jury in the land who would convict me if I pulled out a sword right now and ran you all through?!"

More on University of Texas Wi-Fi Policy 09/10/2004 01:01 PM
An association of university telecom administrators has already asked the FCC to clarify whether universities can ban Wi-Fi networks: The University of Texas recently banned students from setting up their own Wi-Fi networks, stating that the independent networks were interfering with a free university-maintained network. The FCC told the Association of College and University Telecommunications Administrators that schools can prohibit students living in campus housing from building wireless networks. But, if the school leases residential property where students live, they can't restrict the use of wireless networks. The right of the University of Texas to forbid students from using their own wireless networks will depend on who owns the building the students live in....

University of Texas Removes Wi-Fi Ban 09/16/2004 11:29 AM
The University of Texas at Dallas, which recently set a rule forbidding students from building their own Wi-Fi networks, rescinded the policy: The action of forbidding the networks created quite a buzz online. University officials referred to an FCC notice posted in June that makes it clear that the FCC is the only body that has jurisdiction over the airwaves. While universities have some control over what students do in student housing, in this case, the student building is not owned by the university. That means the university has less rights to control what students do there. [link via Frank]...

The University of Texas at Dallas has instituted a new policy that forbids students from setting up their own Wi-Fi networks: The university says the many independent networks cause problems for students trying to connect to the university provided wireless network. I'd like to know why so many students are setting up their own hotspots if the university offers free access--perhaps the university needs to improve their network so that students won't have the need to build their own. It will be interesting to see how students react to the new policy. As noted on Slashdot, this appears to be a case where an organization other than the FCC is attempting to regulate the airwaves. The FCC has recently clarified that it is the only body that controls the airwaves....

The Texas Miracle

The Texas Miracle 01/09/2004 09:57 PM
More on the Texas Miracle
It was called the “Texas Miracle,” and you may remember it because President Bush wanted everyone to know about it during his presidential campaign. It was about an approach to education that was showing amazing results, particularly in Houston, where dropout rates plunged and test scores soared. Houston School Superintendent Rod Paige was given credit for the school success, by making principals and administrators accountable for how well their students did. Once he was elected president, Mr. Bush named Paige as secretary of education. And Houston became the model for the president’s “No Child Left Behind” education reform act.
After yesterday's fund raising and self congratulatory orgy in Knoxville TN it seems appropriate that the record be examined more closely. No child left behind indeed.

Before Enron Houston, Texas had been the locus of a stock scandal of a slightly different sort. Growing up in Houston in the 80s and 90s, I never associated the word "Sharpstown" with anything but a mall, but the area underwent a development mired in scandal.

In the late 1960s Frank W. Sharp, a Houston businessman, negotiated a deal with a few Texas House Democrats; they would help pass a piece of legislation, and in turn, he would ensure that they would make a profit from his company's stock. In 1971, the dealings came to light. Most of the public officials connected with the scandal were run out of office, but somehow one man beat the resulting karma, even it was a a few decades later. But some good did come out of this, as the Texas Open Records Act was expanded in the aftermath of the scandal.
