Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PMThe big discussion that I've been having with a few different people
over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the
email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious
extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone
agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that
Google is developing an
email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an
entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version
of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating
contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've
spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought
Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic -
which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out -
and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google
contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability
to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the
ability to better search through their own email. I could see a
certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their
email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the
email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well,
it could be a real hit.

No more free email?!
No more free email?!

Bill Gates proposes an end to free email If the U.S.
Postal Service delivered mail for free, our mailboxes would surely
runneth over with more credit-card offers, sweepstakes entries, and
supermarket fliers. That's why we get so much junk e-mail: It's
essentially free to send. So Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates,
among others, is now suggesting that we start buying
"stamps" for e-mail.
Email Free Fridays
Email Free Fridays
08/27/2004 02:00 PMTwo years ago we had the story of the Liverpool City Council who
banned
all internal email on Wednesdays. Last year, it was UK company
Phones4U that
banned
all internal email. Apparently, this sort of "trend" picks up one
organization a year. The latest is Veritas Software, where the
marketing department has
declared Friday
an email free day. The VP of marketing felt that email was
getting out of control, so banning it outright (on Fridays, at least)
seemed like a way to force people to figure out other ways to
communicate, and to cut out some of the worst abuses of email. To
make the ban stick, he even promised to fine those who abuse it $1
(and to give that money to charity). Some people can't help
themselves, but others have adjusted. The fine "pool" is apparently
up to $70, but it's growth rate has slowed (and that $70 includes $20
from a woman who "forgot" about the ban, and sent out 65 messages
before she realized her mistake -- but instead of paying $65, the VP
commuted her sentence to $20). What's unclear, though, is whether or
not there's any real benefit to doing this. It's clear that email can
become overwhelming at times. However it
is a useful tool.
Banning it outright, rather than encouraging good email practices
seems a bit extreme. However, perhaps this "email free day" helps to
force people to think about communications practices, and may actually
lead to better email management on the other days of the week.

North Korea offers free email on new gov
website
07/17/2004 11:19 AMBoingBoing reader
Roy
Berman says:
I went to check out the North Korean news wire earlier
today and noticed that they had heavily revised their web site since
the last time I looked at it a few months ago. The layout was still
kind of bad and the English a bit weird, but there were now buttons
for email, shopping, etc. I discovered that the North Korean
government is actually letting people sign up for free web based email
accounts. Their web page actually claims that they have an advanced IT
industry, but somehow after experiencing it's fruit, I am left
doubtful. One of the most amazing things about it was the selection of
password hint questions, which include gems such as 'How would Korea
change after reunification?'
link to Roy's blog entry with more details, and
link to North Korea's government
website, which informs me that "Korea Is One Homogenous Nation," and
that one of the three top-selling books in the northern nation is
"Butterfly and Cock."
