Digital rights management standard
splits
04/09/2004 04:01 PM

Digital rights management ( DRM ) reached a milestone this week, with the promulgation of a major standard, but not without a problem. DRM technologies allow users to shape access to digital documents by building in usage restrictions, resembling copy protection for videotapes. Ideally, a user may set who can view a document, or who can edit it, and for how long.

The International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ) anounced its support for MPEG Rights Expression Language , or MPEG-REL. Many digital content and media giants have been involved in seeing this to fruition.

However, another DRM standard is already gaining ground. Open Digital Rights Language ( ODRL ) has been out since late 2002, and has won some business and academic support .

Due to the perceived widespread demand for DRM, both standards are potentially in a competitive relationship .

Because there are already too many competing digital rights management technologies floating around, such that the music you buy from one online store isn't compatible with the music player you just got for the holidays, Philips and Sony, via InterTrust (which they own) will be rel easing yet another digital rights management standard, which they believe will become the de facto standard that everyone uses. They expect it to be out within six months. Others expect it to be cracked within six months and one day. Once again, isn't it nice to know that these companies are spending so much time and money to make products less useful for consumers?

You use it to view and manage the tags within Apple Loops, such as Descriptors, Genre, Instrument, Key and other useful information as well as create Apple Loops for both ST and GB. DRUMS

DRUMS 05/04/2004 10:57 AM

I still haven't found the time to properly grok DRUMS - but here's a start....

DRUMS: Scott Mathews Proposes a File-Sharing Solution for Media Metadata.

DRUMS is here. Scott has been working on Andromedia, an MP3 server system for a while. c|net, PCUser, techTV, Macworld, ClearChannel, O'Reilly and more have all used and endorsed that system for streaming your MP3s. Scott's new idea, which stands for Digital Rights Uniform Metadata Service, is worth considering and while it's a work in progress, it's a great start. It's a "new centralized/distributed metadatabase of authored works."

Essentially, the idea is to create a central database, along with an authority (or a handful of authorities) that can add/update it. The root DRUMS database would likely include data such as author names, work titles, publication dates, types of work, file checksums, flags indicating which rights remain reserved and which rights have been granted, and so on. It would not contain the actual works themselves.

It would then be propogated across the internet, so that when people release works that are open for copying, systems will have a metadata reference to check this, and then maybe check for new releases as well. It would allow DJ's and others to find works that could be freely shared. Or find works that are licensed in some particular way, so that people can respond appropriately.

Send Scott suggestions as he considers this a group process.

[unmediated]

I'd be interested in what Brian Zisk, Robert Kaye, Ted Cohen, Lucas Gonze and other phosters think of this....

Drums of the bohicans 05/07/2004 03:43 AM
The great studio drummer Steve Gadd is of the most important musicians of the 1970's. Gadd brought bassist Tony Levin (Buddy Rich, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) into the business in New York 30 years ago, and that alone is enough to secure a place in history. You may remember his unforgettable groove on "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", one of many brilliant contributions Gadd made to classics of the 70's pop charts

DRUMS, a new P2P idea 05/06/2004 01:03 PM

Scott Matthews, of turnstyle web mp3 player fame, has launched a new project called DRUMS. It's slighty inspired by Creative Commons and the goal is to create a P2P network that is fair to both copyright owners and folks seeking content. If you have something to add to his proposal, pop on over and drop Scott a line.
