NetNewsWire 2.0b10 and Atom 12/31/2004 05:04 PM
The Atom parser in NetNewsWire 2.0b10 is a complete re-write. It’s much improved. (The change notes page goes into detail, listing tests it passes and so on.)

Aside from doing the things it’s supposed to do—decoding base64, handling namespaces, etc.—it adds a feature that I really like: it presents alternate, via, and related links.

In case you don’t know what I’m talking about, I’ll explain...

An Atom item may contain multiple links. In the past, NetNewsWire just ignored the extra links. Now it parses them and presents them below the description.

For instance, Anne van Kesteren’s feed often includes related links and sometimes includes via links. Those links are displayed immediately below the description, as in the below screen shot:

Screen shot showing related and via
links

This is a pretty cool feature of Atom, that you have a specified way of adding these links.

If you’re interested in more about this, check out Mark Pilgrim’s How to make a linkblog in Atom.

NetNewsWire 2.0b10 includes bug fixes, a rewritten Atom parser, a bunch of small new features and enhancements—but the feature that will probably get the most attention is podcasting support.

Note: it’s still a beta. It still has bugs. In fact, one of the changes we made was that, the first time you launch it, a window appears that reminds you it’s a beta.

Some of the changes you were waiting for—they’re in there now. Some things you’re waiting for aren’t there yet—but we’re working on them!

The change notes go into more detail.

Screen shots

Before talking more about podcasting, here are a few screen shots, since the look of things has changed a little bit since the previous beta:

Podcasting

We weren’t originally going to add podcasting support to NetNewsWire 2.0—but after intense lobbying by a thousand and one podcast enthusiasts, we changed our mind.

Here’s the gist of how it works:

1. Whenever there’s a news item with an enclosure, NetNewsWire tells you, and gives you buttons you can click to download it to disk or to iTunes.

2. You can tell NetNewsWire to download enclosures automatically or not.

3. You can tell NetNewsWire to send audio enclosures to iTunes. You can tell it to use the name of the feed as the playlist name, or you can specify a playlist name. You can also specify a genre and you can tell NetNewsWire to delete downloaded files after sending them to iTunes.

4. You can create a smart list that shows all your enclosures.

(See some of the screen shots further up to see what all this looks like.)

This is all still beta, of course—there may be bugs, and the feature may still evolve based on feedback.

More features

There are a bunch of other cool things I want to point out—but I’ll save them for follow-up posts...

A New Butler For Jonas

A New Butler For Jonas 03/14/2005 05:06 PM
It has been two weeks since Jonas Luster fired his butler.  The primary reason cited was gross insubordination — an unwillingness on the part of the butler do as he was asked.  Perhaps the fact that the butler doesn’t help with of Jonas’s real needs — the ones behind the statement I am busy still trying to sift through all those advertisements — was also a factor. On the surface, it seems that Google’s AutoLink meets the letter of each of Yoz’s three rules for determining if such a tool is within the spirit of the Web.  However, upon closer examination, it turns out that there may be some wiggle room in the first rule.  Today the Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer is closed source.  The skills and techniques for creating such a thing are well beyond the abilities of most users.  Heck, they are black magic to most seasoned programmers. Simply put, if you can’t see the definition (and furthermore don’t trust the author to the point of being willing to write what amounts to a blank check), then how can a closed source toolbar ever pass the “completely understood” test? What if such a tool were open source?  Furthermore, suppose the tool were well commented, and structured in such a way that people who have even the most tenuous grasp on the concepts of HTML could reasonably modify it to remove the links and content that they don’t want, and add or reorder the links that they do want? Today Mark Pilgrim made available a new butler that is all this and more.  Made available under the GPL.  Share and enjoy. Now, Jonas, would you fire this butler too?

Rhett Butler, the NFL and Other
Charitable Causes

Rhett Butler, the NFL and Other
Charitable Causes
04/26/2004 05:31 PM

I don't normally publicize this fact, but a decent chunk of what I earn goes to charity. For example, in addition to several smaller donations, last year Bradbury Software donated $5000.00 to a local women's shelter, and earlier in the year I gave $1000.00 to a local children's hospitable.

The biggest problem for me isn't giving the money, but instead figuring out which charities are worthwhile. All too often I've donated to charities which sounded good but in fact did little to actually help people other than themselves. Or I've given to charities which were worthwhile, but circumstances beyond their control prevented their help from reaching those who needed it.

Finding out which charities are worthwhile can take a lot of time, so it's a blessing to discover a friend who has already done the work. Every year my good friend Kevin Carter hosts a "Waiting for Wishes" fundraiser dinner which raises money for charities he's researched, and I'm always glad to be invited.

I have to confess, though, that part of the reason I enjoy the dinner is because it lets loose the prankster in me. You see, Kevin plays for the Tennesse Titans, and he invites fellow teammates to be waiters. In order to raise money, those attending the dinner are supposed to pay these NFL players to sign autographs, sing songs, etc. Well, I figure I should get my money's worth, so I gave $1000.00 to see Kevin play the part of Rhett Butler in Gone With the Wind.

And of course Kevin had to choose another teammate to be his Scarlett O'Hara.

Without a moment's hesitation, Kevin chose linebacker Keith Bullock to play Scarlett. I'll tell you, watching these guys act out the final scene of Gone With the Wind was perhaps the most worthy cause I've given to :)

FireFox Extension Creates Stir

FireFox Extension Creates Stir 03/23/2005 05:18 PM

A new FireFox extension called Greasemonkey allows users to modify webpages as they view them. It gives users the capabilities to manipulate DHTML of a page to prevent ads from appearing, transform links, make a page more printable, change colors, ad your Amazon ID’s in links, change the way links open, and much more. There are literally hundreds of GreaseMonkey userscripts. This all sounds like a great idea, but news.com has some security concerns.

The trouble with Greasemonkey and user scripts in general is that scripts can be used for both good and ill, and end users scanning through lists of enticing scripts might fail to distinguish between malicious and benign code."A user JavaScript file can in no way harm your computer or stored data, but badly written files can slow down Opera, and malicious files can spy on your browsing," read the browser maker's caveat. "Never install and use a script library from someone you don't know and trust--if in doubt post in the Opera forums, newsgroups or mailing lists and ask if the script you would like to use is well written and exploit-free."

User scripts also could facilitate password-stealing schemes, said security consultant Richard Smith, who runs the Computer Bytes Man Web site."The bad guys could likely create a script for stealing usernames and passwords in login forms using this tool," said Smith. "They would still need to break into someone's computer to install the script, but the tool would make the theft process much easier."

Extension

When Firefox add ed RSS support, I had mixed reactions. On the one hand, I was excited by the boost RSS would receive by being supported in a popular browser. But on the other hand, for obvious reasons I wasn't wild about how Firefox built RSS into the browser without enabling users to choose an external RSS reader.

So, I was glad when several FeedDemon customers talking about building an extension to enable FeedDemon to take advantage of the new Firefox RSS features.

Michael Koziarski rose to the challenge and created F eed Your Reader, a Firefox extension that enables you to subscribe to feed in FeedDemon - or any other RSS reader that supports the feed: // protocol. Which means that even though the extension was designed with FeedDemon in mind, it's not specific to FeedDemon. Initial tests show that it also works with NetNewsWire on the Mac.

Once this extension is installed, you'll see an additional "FYR" icon in Firefox's status bar right next to the existing RSS icon. Clicking the FYR icon displays a menu of auto-discovered feeds, and clicking one of these feeds will display FeedDemon's "New Channel" wizard to subscribe to it.

Details on Feed Your Reader are h ere, and the project page is here. If you're viewing this in Firefox, the download link to the XPI (extension) is here .
