Windows Update v6 Released as Microsoft
Update
06/06/2005 12:13 AM
Thanks eXtermia for the heads up on this news, found at DriverHeaven

They are reporting that Microsoft have publically released Windows Update v6, now dubbed Microsoft Update. Users on Windows 2000, 2003 Server and XP have access to the web site after downloading an ActiveX update. The new update site supports both Windows and Office 2003 updates in one central location making it easier for customers to get a hold of the latest patches and updates available to Microsoft software.

Once at the website, you'll have to agree to download some new software which may take a couple of minutes, but once done you'll see the new version of the Windows Update website - although there don't seem to be any new updates on there at the moment. Windows XP users will have to have at least Service Pack 1 to use the site.

Interface designer Matthew Thomas rips into Ubuntu and GNOME. Most of these complaints can be summarized as "GNOME isn't Mac OS" (no, really?). He's in for some serious frustration if he thinks he can get 15-year-old conventions like menu bars inside windows changed; the GNOME project has had years to copy the Mac but they made a conscious decision not to.

AllTray 0.50 (Default branch) 04/18/2005 06:36 PM
AllTray is software that allows users to dock any application into the system tray. You can dock (for example) Mozilla Thunderbird, Evolution, and even terminals. A highlight feature is that a click on the "close" button of an application will minimize it to the system tray. It works well with Gnome, KDE, XFCE 4, Fluxbox, and WindowMaker.
Changes:
New release have special XMMS support: minimize to tray, "Play", "Pause", and "Next" in the menu, and a nice icon. Balloon shaped tooltips. Efforts to avoid a visible window before it is docked/reparented ("flash effect").

Ubuntu has been shipping free cd's of its distro for some time now - actually, sets containing a live (Knoppix-like - just boot, no install) CD and a 'regular' CD, for Intel, Apple, and AMD64 architectures. They're in fact shipping *loads* of such cd's - for free - if you go to their shipping page, the default number to order is 10. Probably not a bad way to introduce acquaintances to Linux.
