Bluetooth EDR: Triple Speed Bluetooth 06/10/2004 11:38 AM

bluetooth.jpgThe Bluetooth SIG, the group that controls the standards that define the short-range radio networking technology has announced a proposal for a new version of Bluetooth that offers data rates almost 3 times as fast as the previous version. Called Bluetooth EDR (for Enhanced Data Rate), the new specification claims data rates of up to 2.1Mbps and remains backward-compatible with the original Bluetooth spec. No word, however, if the enhanced data rate will causes a proportionate decrease in range, not unlike 802.11g compares to 802.11b.

Cars In The UAE Will Have IBM-Installed
Back Seat Drivers

Cars In The UAE Will Have IBM-Installed
Back Seat Drivers
04/15/2005 04:49 AM
In an effort to stem a rising tide of automobile-related accident deaths, the UAE has contracted IBM to install telematics "black boxes" in tens of thousands of emergency and government vehicles. The systems will be connected to a nationwide wireless network, making it the largest telematics network in the world. In addition to tracking vehicle speed and location, the system will also vocally warn the driver if they are speeding. While this is a huge win for IBM in its big bet on becoming the world's high-end services and business process vendor, will this system actually make the roads any safer? We've discussed numerous times here that speed cameras don't work. Also, in the case of traff ic light cameras, thinking that big brother is watching makes for some nervous, brake-happy drivers -- which, in turn, results in a higher number of rear-end collisions at camera equipped traffic signals. With the telematics system, the UAE could end up with a nation full of enraged drivers, not paying attention to the road because they're busy being nagged by their cars for driving too fast. Just because big brother is watching doesn't mean it's safer.

If you have PHP installed and you've

03/13/2003 10:22 AM

If you have PHP installed and you've loaded up 10.2.4 you've probably noticed that PHP no longer works. By editing httpd.conf in the following way I was able to get PHP back and running. Disclaimer: I don't really know what I'm doing here, I'm just a guy armed with BBEdit and some vague notions. Follow my lead at your peril. That said:

  1. Open httpd.conf in the text editor of your choice.
  2. Find the following lines and uncomment them:
    #LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so
    #AddModule mod_php4.c
  3. Find this line:
    Include /private/etc/httpd/users
  4. And add this line right after it:
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
  5. Save.
  6. Open your System Preferences, go to Sharing and restart your web server.
PHP should be running again. At least, it is for me ;-) Discuss
