The Death of a Room-Mate... Tony Meilandt (1957-2004)

The Death of a Room-Mate... Tony
Meilandt (1957-2004)
04/09/2004 04:01 PM

I didn't intend this blog to become a death trip, and I'm determined that it won't be in the long run, but right now I have another obituary to write. I'm at the desk in my New York apartment. Right here, sitting in the same chair I now occupy, surrounded by the same mementos and miscellaneous layers of human deposition, my angel-hearted room-mate Tony Meilandt dropped dead a week ago last night. He was only 46 years old. I'm not sure what killed him. The New York Coroner's Office has not rendered an official opinion and, based on my previous experience with that great bureaucratic sphinx, is unlikely to do so any time soon. As we have seen, mysterious death in New York City often remains mysterious for many months. It might have been the flu that got him. For maybe ten days, Tony had been very sick with the same predatory virus that's been berserking around the planet all winter. When I talked to him on the phone four days before he died, I could hear an alarming whistle in his lungs. I told him to go to a hospital. He told me he had, but that they had sent him home. Figures. Last time I went to an emergency room in New York, the "John Doe" in the cubicle next to me died unattended. He might have been cut down by that strange scythe that sometimes slices through the re-ascending. After a long season in hell, Tony's life had just been paroled. He had been something of a legend once in the music business, having taken a major production role in much of Herbie Hancock's best recorded output and worked closely with Bill Laswell, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman, and many other jazz greats. But then he got lost in a blizzard of the bad powders that often snow on success in the music business. He wandered in that white-out for about a decade and managed, by all accounts, to piss off just about everybody in the industry during that time. But, by the time I met him, a little over a year ago, he'd gone through rehab, had been clean for a good long spell, and was rebuilding his career very rapidly. In short order, he put together a record album for the Olympics, began managing Bill Laswell's career again, and had entered into a partnership with East End Management, which manages a number of artists, including Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac. He started sharing rent on my Chinatown pad last summer. Though he was in residence as sporadically as I was, I was always happy when we coincided. There was something pure in him, a radiative sweetness that made his abundant appreciation capable of penetrating even its most skeptically armored targets. Not everybody liked Tony at first, but everybody liked him eventually. A lot of people loved him. I certainly did....

P-Mate

P-Mate 06/23/2004 10:52 AM

p_mate.jpg image

In Gizmodo's continuing quest to bring full equality to the sexes, let me direct your attention to the 'P-Mate,' a urination device for women that allows the ladies to experience the singular biological advantage that men have over women -- the ability to pee standing up. Essentially a disposable funnel that cups around the vagina, like a little genitalia shoe, the P-Mate directs the waste stream into anywhere you might fancy urine to go. Say, a men's urinal, a filthy gas station toilet, or onto one of your by-the-hour clients. Then simply toss the "fully recyclable" unit into the appropriate garbage bin and be on your way. But remember, as P-Company, the makers of P-Mate, recommend: practice makes perfect. I would add a bit of sage gadget advice that we men have adhered to for millennia, or at least since the 1980s: whatever you do, don't cross the streams. (Thanks, Chris!)

PHP History 05/27/2004 03:13 PM

PHP programming language: Some interesting history on PHP. It used to be a Perl wrapper?

PHP was originally designed as a wrapper around Perl by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994 to display his resume information and collect some data, such as how many hits it was generating. Others first used "Personal Home Page Tools" in 1995, which Lerdorf had combined with his own Form Interpreter to create PHP/FI.

Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, two Israeli developers of the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology rewrote the parser in 1997, forming the basis of PHP 3. They also changed the name to its current recursive form. After months in beta, the development team officially released PHP/FI 2 in November 1997.

John Allsopp: Message To The Messengers - Props to the old school:

Of late, with the latest version of Style Master released, bedded down, and well received, I've been a little nostalgic about the old days of CSS. So I thought I might try to ride that wave a little, cast my mind back over my experience of CSS, and talk a little about some people you really should be grateful to if you work with CSS and web standards. Particularly some you might not have heard of.

There follows a tribute to some of the unsung heroes of the early history of CSS. And if that's piqued your interest, Lauren Wood's recent post about DOM Level 3 becoming a W3C Recommendation has some insights in to the early days of the DOM Working Group, which she chaired up until November 2001.

The reporter, George Weller, who worked for the (defunct) Chicago Daily News, was prevented from reporting on a mysterious “Disease X” out of fear that the stories of radiation poisoning would horrify the world and shift public attitudes regarding the bomb.

Weller died two years ago. Carbons of the articles were discovered by his son, Anthony.

History of Podcasting!

History of Podcasting! 06/17/2005 03:51 PM

Seems someone with an agenda is over on Wikipedia making changes to the History of Podcasting. Specifically removing Dave Winer from all mentions. This is beyond a travesty, and even though the majority of us that have been in the space for a while know the real history, it upsets me to see people using the WiKi to make changes that attempts to write people, that contributed to the success of Podcasting out of existence.

RSS is the Glue that makes Podcasting a unique audio delivery vehicle, and "Dave Winer" is the man behind RSS 2.0, Granted others in the space made significant contributions, but to remove Dave's part from the history of podcasting is wrong and a injustice.

Getting the History right in my book was important, people will be hard pressed to alter what is on paper. [Scrip ting News]
