2004-07-20T23:47:11 My laptop
replacement system

2004-07-20T23:47:11 My laptop
replacement system
07/20/2004 05:54 PM

After trying (without success) to get my laptop to play nice with my wireless card for about 10 gruelling hours, and hearing I'm getting a nice tax refund, I've decided on plan B: using my laptop replacement system.

Every few years, I buy a US$900-ish consumer laptop (using the best deal I can find), and sell it about 2 years later for about US$400. Then I buy a new one. This way, I always have a decent model, while paying very little (about US$300 a year). It's a much better strategy than buying the latest new fancy model for US$2500 and keeping it 5 years. First of all, you'd be paying more per year. And second, on average, you'll probably have a less powerfull system during those 5 years, since after 2 years my latest new laptop will be at least equally powerful to your older laptop, and after 4 years I'll have a laptop that's much more powerful than your old one.

So that's been my system, and it has worked pretty well. An additional (and not to be underestimated) benefit is that you get a fresh Windows install every 2 years. One of the biggest factors in slowing down a Windows machine is simply the amount of time you've been working on it. And there's really not much you can do about that, even with obsesive cleaning up of your computer. Installing a fresh Windows copy on a laptop yourself is an experience I can't recommend.

I don't spend too much time comparing laptops. I know I need a consumer model, I just look around for good deals (there are always a few good deals with rebates and such floating around) and then compare tech specs to check if there are no snafus. For example, on the laptop I decided on this year, you have to take out existing 128M memory cards (and pretty much throw them away) if you want to add memory. Not nice, but I can live with that.

So this year I'm selling my Compaq Presario 715US and buying a
HP Pavilion ze5730us Notebook. Pretty much the same computer, but more powerful. The harddrive is 40Gig instead of 20Gig, the processor is about twice as fast, I can install more memory (up to 1024 M RAM compared to up to 465 Meg on the Compaq) and it has built-in wireless. And a fresh XP install, of course.

Additionally, I'll sell the old laptop in Belgium instead of here in the US. Laptops are about 20-30% more expensive in Europe compared to the US.

T-Online Buying AOL?

T-Online Buying AOL? 11/13/2003 01:36 PM
The Register is reporting that T-Online, the ISP part of Deutsche Telekom, is talking to Time Warner about buying AOL, though they also get a T-Online person to deny the rumor. Time Warner has repeatedly said that they have no plans to sell AOL, but there certainly are executives there who would love to see it go. Of course, a more likely discussion would be more informal discussions to see if T-Online would want to buy AOL's German (or European) operations, and not the whole thing. However, the article doesn't suggest that at all, and seems to indicate they're looking at the whole thing.

Six Apart Buying Live Journal?

Six Apart Buying Live Journal? 01/04/2005 10:51 PM
Om Malik claims to have it on good authority that Six Apart is in the process of buying Live Journal. If it's true, it's an interesting move. Many people have been wondering exactly where Six Apart fits into the market. While they offer software for your own server, it's clear that they've been paying much more attention to the TypePad hosting service -- which faced some form of competition from the various free sites, including Blogger and Live Journal. TypePad has been able to get more users by offering additional features and more control than free sites, but still at cheaper rates than hosting your site separately and installing the software yourself. Faced with some amount of competition from Google, MSN and AOL (and, probably Yahoo at some point), it looks like Six Apart decided they needed to get into the numbers game to show that, somehow, they had more bloggers than the others -- and Live Journal gives them that point. However, it's not clear how much Live Journal users have in common with TypePad users. The two seem to attract very different audiences. While that might mean they've just expanded their market, they've expanded it mainly with people who aren't interested in paying, and who seem less likely to move up the scale than users from other blogging services. Either way, it looks like, as we kick off 2005, we're already facing "blog consolidation." If this deal does happen, it will be interesting to see what Six Apart does with all those Live Journal users. With the growth of contextual advertising (see what Google has done with Blogger for reference), it wouldn't be surprising if they hope to leverage all those sites for advertising rather than pushing them towards subscription services.

Mac buying advice needed

Mac buying advice needed 12/15/2003 08:08 PM

I'm in the market for a new laptop, and I'm almost 100% certain it's going to be a Mac. I'm going to be using it as my primary personal computing platform, but the vast majority of what I do with a computer is browsing, using email and messing around Python, Apache and other geeky toys. I'm sorely tempted by one of the 14" iBooks. Since I'll be using this thing a lot (and I've never been a huge fan of laptop keyboards) 12 inches seems to small, and I'm not convinced that the extra cash for a PowerBook is worthwhile now that iBooks go up to 1 GHz.

One major concern is that this is likely to be my only computer purchase for the next couple of years, and will likely be the machine that gets me through my final year of University. With this in mind, I'm not sure if shelling out the extra for a PowerBook is a better investment than I think it is.

I'm hoping that a fair number of Mac users will read this, so here's a whole bunch of questions that have come up during my research:

  1. Buy from Apple, or buy from some other place like MacMall? Is it worth shopping around for a good deal or does Apple fix the prices to the point that I may as well buy straight from them?
  2. Will I really, really regret buying an iBook right now in a few weeks time? The Mac Rumours Buyer's Guide says "Buy - Product recently updated" as the iBook was last updated 54 days ago. I'm just worried that the price will go down significantly after Christmas.
  3. RAM. I've been told that it's best to buy the lowest configuration system from Apple and upgrade the memory myself. If I do this, where are good places to buy compatible memory online?
  4. Battery life: how long can I expect a standard iBook to last on battery? Is the expensive upgrade to add a second battery worth the investment?
  5. Are there additional advantages to getting a PowerBook over an iBook that I haven't considered?
  6. Finally, a question about Virtual PC. Now that Microsoft have bought it can I still use it to run Linux? I know it's possible to run most Linux software on OS X but I really like the idea of a sandboxed Linux install I can futz with without fear of destroying anything, especially since we use Linux heavily at work.

Buying the Disability Lobby, and More

Buying the Disability Lobby, and More 06/11/2004 07:05 PM

  • NY Times: The Disability Lobby and Voting. ome supporters of voter-verifiable paper trails question whether disability-rights groups have gotten too close to voting machine manufacturers. Besides the donation by Diebold to the National Federation of the Blind, there have been other gifts. According to Mr. Dickson, the American Association of People with Disabilities has received $26,000 from voting machine companies this year. The real issue, though, is that disability-rights groups have been clouding the voting machine debate by suggesting that the nation must choose between accessible voting and verifiable voting.
  • The voting-machine scandal just grows and grows. When the National Federation of the Blind accepts $1 million from Diebold, maker of the scandalously lousy machines that California recently banned, you have to shake your head in amazement at how putrid this entire situation is getting. The League of Women Voters' support of unverifiable voting machines is another astounding situation. Barbara Simons, a California woman who's an expert in computer technology, is running for president (AP) of the organization in a protest vote. I hope she wins and, with others who can't fathom the league's refusal to recognize reality, gets the organization to change its odd stance. The fact remains simple. There is no way anyone should trust to verify the validity of votes cast with some of these electronic voting machines unless we create a voter-verifiable paper trail and have frequent, random audits of precincts. Disabled people deserve a way to cast a fair vote, honestly counted. Some of the groups representing them -- taking money from the voting machine lobby -- would rather risk entire elections than make sure we do this right. It's a shame.

Sun contemplates buying Novell 08/02/2004 04:29 AM
AN INTERVIEW with Sun's president Jonathan Schwartz in today's Wall Street Journal quotes him as saying his firm could buy Novell and other firms to position itself against IBM in the marketplace. In fact, according to the article, Sun discusses takeovers every day, Schwartz tells the Journal and is in a position to do so because of its vast cash reserves.

He told the newspaper that a Novell acquisition would wrong foot IBM and Red Hat, but he also said that Sun hadn't formally opened acquisition talks with the Utah based company. Novell may not want to be seduced by Sun Microsystems.
