In the four years since the first public demonstration of 64-bit Windows in 1999, the OS has been fully ported and now runs native Itanium instructions for both the kernel and supporting processes. The LLP64 Windows pointer model (int and long remain 32 bits wide, "long long" and pointers are defined as 64 bits wide) provided for minimal code changes during the port. With the exception of architectural specific design in the kernel (some examples in table below), 32-bit and 64-bit Windows share common source code. For example, the Windows user interface remains the same. All the familiar Windows tools from Microsoft Notepad to Microsoft Internet Explorer can be produced in 32-bit or 64-bit images. The same holds true for application development: 32-bit code and 64-bit code can share common source.

AMD Readies New PGA939 Processor

AMD Readies New PGA939 Processor 07/29/2004 09:42 AM
Advanced Micro Devices may be preparing a new microprocessor in PGA939 packaging to broaden the lineup of offerings for the emerging infrastructure. The new chip will have 1MB of cache and 1000MHz HyperTransport bus, representing a lower-speed bin of the AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 microprocessor. Mainboard maker ECS has updated the list of supporting chips for latest mainboard based on VIA K8T800 Pro chipset for Socket 939 processors with AMD Athlon 64 3600+ product name. The SKU with 1MB of cache and 1000MHz HT bus has not been announced yet, but a mentioning by a mainboard maker may indicate a short release of the processor.

Additional details about the AMD Athlon 64 3600+ are not clear, but X-bit labs’ analyst Ilya Gavrichenkov suggested that the product may be a cut-down version of the AMD Athlon 64 FX-53 with core-clock reduced to 2.20GHz. Specifications of the AMD Athlon 64 3600+ look similar compared to those of the AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 product, with exception of 1000MHz HT bus, that is currently not been supplied by AMD.

Today, AMD announces it is demonstrating the industry's first x86 dual-core processor. During demonstrations held at the company's Austin facilities, AMD is showing an HP ProLiant DL585 server powered by four dual-core AMD Opteron(tm) processors manufactured on 90nm silicon-on-insulator process technology. With a simple upgrade path to more efficient computing, based on AMD's existing system infrastructure and industry-standard architecture, enterprise customers can expect more efficient processing power without the penalties of increased power consumption and heat dissipation. The dual-core AMD Opteron processor for servers and workstations is expected to offer the best performance per watt in the market when AMD plans to make it available in mid-2005.
