The Boeing Co.'s Connexion by Boeing (CBB) unit and Singaporean telecommunications operator StarHub Pte. Ltd. have signed an initial agreement to let StarHub users access in-flight Internet services offered by CBB and have charges billed to their StarHub account, the companies said Thursday.

Boeing in Flight

Boeing in Flight 05/18/2004 01:17 AM
It's not "What Hath God Wrought," but it's historic nonetheless: Connexion by Boeing launched its first commercial flight today, with flight 452 on Lufthansa flying from Munich to Los Angeles. The press release and photo were filed (also a first) from the flight at 35,000 feet. Connexion's commercial launch of a single plane is significant, but Lufthansa won't finish unwiring its 80 planes in its long-haul fleet until the end of 2006. In fact, it's possible that fewer than a dozen planes out of a few hundred committed will be ready to go this year. Data
07/22/2004 04:23 PM
Two stories converge on Connexion by Boeing and Airbus's future in-flight data plans: Tenzing is folding itself into a firm jointly owned by itself, Airbus, and SITA, a Dutch-based air-phone operator. Tenzing will keep employees in Seattle, and SITA will be the majority shareholder. Tenzing will have the advantage now of this direct relationship with Airbus, which has begun to build Wi-Fi into planes as a standard option. The new company will also focus on in-flight wireless calls, the third firm to announce its intentions to offer or to test out this capability in the last few weeks. The new firm expects to offer that service in 2006 starting on intra-Europe flights where SITA already offers its more conventional in-flight phone service, while their high-speed data offering is still on track starting in 2005. Meanwhile, Connexion by Boeing signed Siemens as a customer, which means that Siemens employees will have easier, and presumably cheaper, access to the service. Connexion is installed in just one Lufthansa plane so far, which flies from Munich to Los Angeles non-stop, but Lufthansa and several other airlines continue their commitment to build out their long-haul fleets....

Downloads As Promotions

Downloads As Promotions 08/27/2004 03:36 PM
This is something of an odd interview -- and it's not entirely clear why Business Week has chosen to use it, but it's with a kid who really likes some new band, and even though the band offers all of their music online for free, he still feels it's worth it to buy everything they release, just because they release it. The free music acted as a promotion that got him hooked, and caused him to go out and buy the albums as well as making sure he goes and sees them perform live as well. While it's just one anecdotal example, it does hold a lesson the industry needs to learn. Their first response, of course, would be that this is just one kid and they're trying to protect against everyone else who wouldn't be so honest. However, more to the point, there's a marketing message. The kid makes it clear that he'll buy a product he sees value in -- and it clearly has to do with the packaging and the band behind it. The industry continues to think they're selling "music." But, they're really selling "the band" and everything that entails, including how the music is packaged (nice CD material? extra features?), concerts, fan-wear, fanclubs, access to the musicians and plenty of other things. Once they realize that, they can see that the music is simply a way to promote all of the above. Will some people just take the music and nothing else? Sure. But that's no different than people watching a commercial and not buying the product. The music itself has promotional value, which the industry seems to deny.
