Another Reason to Shop at Costco

Another Reason to Shop at Costco

Another Reason to Shop at Costco 04/09/2004 04:00 PM

I'm not surprised to hear that Costco's CEO isn't the typically greedy type of corporate chieftain. Because he runs a different kind of company.

Another Reason Not to Shop at Wal-Mart

Another Reason Not to Shop at Wal-Mart 01/17/2004 10:47 PM
New York Times (reg req): Worke rs Assail Night Lock-Ins by Wal-Mart. The reason for Mr. Rodriguez's delayed trip to the hospital was a little-known Wal-Mart policy: the lock-in. For more than 15 years, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, has locked in overnight employees at some of its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores. It is a policy that many employees say has created disconcerting situations, such as when a worker in Indiana suffered a heart attack, when hurricanes hit in Florida and when workers' wives have gone into labor.

(Costco, originally uploaded by mathowie)

As we were buying our first diapers ever (will be needing them soon), Kay noticed they had some sort of cross-promotion with disney, putting characters all over the diapers. I knew was she was thinking when she mentioned it; it is a little scary to think infants are being marketed to by the Disney Corp.

But I cast away all fears when I realized something and said "Yeah, but think about it, these are diapers -- our daughter will get to shit right on Mickey!"

Starting Oct. 1, discount retailer Costco will begin selling a US$269.99 iPod mini bundle on its Web site. In addition to a standard 4GB iPod mini in pink, silver or blue, the package includes a gift certificate for 15 songs from the iTunes Music Store and Apple's iPod mini Armband, which appears to be the same one sold on the online Apple Store for $29. Given that the gift certificate and armband are worth $43.85, this bundle enables you to purchase an iPod mini for $226.14. Costco.com is not currently offering the green and gold iPod mini colors, however.

One Less Reason Not To Switch

One Less Reason Not To Switch 05/11/2004 01:45 PM

Novell has announced in a p ress release that they will release the Exchange Connector for Ximian Evolution, previously a $75/seat plugin, as open source.

Novell today announced its Connector for Microsoft* Exchange Server will be integrated into EvolutionTM 2.0 and made available as open source, beginning today with the current Connector 1.4. Evolution is Novell's award-winning e-mail and workgroup client for Linux* systems and is the most widely used collaboration suite on Linux. Evolution Connector allows Microsoft Exchange Server 2000/2003 users to easily manage their e-mail, calendars, group schedules, address books, public folders and tasks from Linux desktops.

I was thrilled to hear this. Evolution (particularly the current betas) is the equal of MS Outlook in features, but without many of the problems. The only downside was that you had to pony up the cash to natively connect with an Exchange server. My guess is that Novell feels that having this out there will speed the adoption of Linux, and that will provide them more revenue than they had been making by selling the plugin. A positive side effect of Ximian being purchased by Novell.

It appears that Novell has recognized their increasing irrelevance in their old niche, LAN products, and is jumping in to open source with both feet. Could this approach put them back into dominant position?

Varargs. Or, these days, stdargs. It's how C lets you define functions that take a variable number of arguments. Why do I hate it? Because, even though you're forced to view the argument list opaquely, there's no argument count! That is, the standard says the variable length argument list lives in a magic va_arg thingie, you must use the Magic Functions to get the individual arguments out, and you must have the magic ... signature to note varargs in the function declaration, but... the standard can't be bothered to mandate that an argument count is passed. This seems utterly mad....
