Linux on Desktop Making Big Strides

Linux on Desktop Making Big Strides 04/09/2004 04:00 PM

It looks like I'm going to have to reconsider something I'd been taking for granted -- that Linux on the desktop, and especially the laptop, was a non-starter in the operating systems race. While I wasn't paying sufficient attention, the proverbial tortoise has been playing some serious catch-up.

When Ireland's leading bank, Allied Irish Bank (AIB), last month disclosed that it was disposing of the Windows PCs that its tellers used on their desktops in favor of Linux-based terminals, experts said it demonstrated that an IT insurgency is emerging in the financial services sector. Linux is finally proving itself on the desktop in the financial industry, where cost-conscious executives want powerful performance at an affordable price.

Linux on the desktop at IBM

Linux on the desktop at IBM 11/15/2003 07:50 PM

Spotted on Slashdot, IBM's Open Source Desktop - Directions for today... and Tomorrow presentation includes one slide that really caught my attention:

To continue our own journey to becoming an on demand business, IBM expects to migrate our internal desktop environment, where appropriate, to open standards based on the Linux platform.

Of course, depending on how they define "appropriate" this could be a lot less exciting than it looks. Still, it's a pretty huge boost for the Linux desktop movement.

What do you do when your ISP tells you the reason your Windows box can't connect to the network is because its network drivers got corrupted? You download new drivers using your Linux client and use Sneakernet to move them to Windows. USB storage devices like M-Systems' DiskOnKey are extremely useful for ad hoc chores like this, and I was lucky to have one on hand. But how to make Linux mount the device as seamlessly as Windows does?

Testing out Linux on the desktop

Testing out Linux on the desktop 04/29/2004 03:42 AM
We've talked a lot lately (well, in the last year) about Linux on your servers - but what about on your users' desktops? The biggest prize in Novell's acquisition of Ximian last year is thought to be the GNOME user interface for Linux. This graphical user interface (GUI) makes a Linux desktop seem friendlier and easier to use for a person reared on Windows than the traditional command-line that gearheads and geeks say they prefer.
