Gadget Overload

Gadget Overload 04/26/2004 04:07 PM
We've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets, but for many people, all we've experienced is the nee d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic (assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN) card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter being back at the hotel room."

Who better to ping with a packet of, "What's in your gadget bag?" (Am I getting good at these, or what? Thanks, Xeni!)

He'll send you a five page screed on the latest Wi-Fi news, dropping unexpected science out of the ether, and every single time you'll come away smarter than you started. Fortunately, he doesn't limit his insight to email, instead writing for a variety of outlets including the Seattle Times and his own technology weblog, Wi-Fi Networking News. When we solicited him about his gadget bag, Glenn graciously provided in spades, even in the eve of the birth of his son. Thanks Glenn, and congratulations to you and your wife! After the first cut, may your son's life always be wireless.

Wireless. Sure. What a dream. I make most of my living writing about wireless technology, primarily Wi-Fi. So why is my traveling bag full of wires? Is it because Bluetooth turned out to be weaker and more confusing than planned? Is it because I have too much equipment that doesn't use standards? These are the questions I ask when I look at my regular traveling kit, and I have no good answers, just more wires.

hip-e: Gadget System for Teens

hip-e: Gadget System for Teens 08/19/2004 09:44 AM

01_node_pic.jpg imageA company called "Digital Lifestyles" has a new product line out called "hip-e," which after you get done cringing over the name look fairly decent, but probably way overpriced to properly market to the teen segment. The whole concept revolves around the "node," a Pentium M-based iMac-esque desktop PC, with a 17-inch built-in widescreen LCD (1400 by 900 pixels). The node is an odd mixture of cut corners and nice options, such as 512MB of RAM standard - that's nice - but only "high performance video," which means it will probably not play videogames worth a damn (and that's before you factor in the 1.5GHz processor). So it's hard to decide what parent or self-sufficient kid is going to want to drop $1,700 on a neat but underpowered machine when they could probably get a couple of eMachines or something for the same price.

Clearly, though, Digital Lifestyles is hoping the cross-promotion of the Hip-e will push more units, and they're doing it in both interesting and annoying ways. The detachable "beatbox" that comes with the node PC also functions as external speakers for the "playme" 512MB flash drive ($150); that's a pretty cool trick. But the "Squads" idea, which looks to be some sort of viral advertising masked as teenage social networking looks really pathetic (although it's not out yet, so take that for what it's worth).

Marketing to teens is a fine idea, but the Hip-e may be trying a little too hard. Kids can sniff out focus groups' pawprints from a mile away. (Thanks, Mike!)

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis?

What's In Your Gadget Bag, Warren Ellis? 08/31/2004 07:44 AM

warren_ellis.jpg imageWarren Ellis single-handedly reignited my love of funny books with his seminal not-near-enough-future comic Transmetropolitan. Does he need any more introduction than that? Currently working on a novel (without pretty pictures!) and the conversion of the Global Frequency books into a TV series, Warren dashed out his choices for what he includes in his Gadget Bag in typical style:

You just caught me. I'm off to Atlanta in 36 hours or so; jumping from British Summer Time to Eastern Daylight Time for something called Dragon*Con, where I'm a special guest (and also cultivating the Freak Vote in prep for my first prose novel, published next summer).

I travel light. I'm the guy whose bag hits the luggage carousel last. I'm the guy who's still there at three in the morning in an empty hall, with tumbleweed blowing past, sitting there next to horse skeletons and starving vultures, waiting for the airport workers to finish their smack break and grub around in the back of the airplane for my bag. Which usually comes out looking like they've been having group sex on it. So, five or six years ago, I decided that if it didn't fit into a carry-on bag, I wasn't taking it.

Glenn Fleishman's gadget bag

Glenn Fleishman's gadget bag 07/23/2004 02:39 AM
The latest victim in Gizmodo's "What's in Your Gadget Bag?" feature is Glenn Fleishman, who comes clean about a truly astonishing amount of crap that he lugs around with him in his electronics kit, described with the loving verbosity of a real geek.
The camera used to take this picture is a Canon S1 IS, a 3-megapixel device that has a 10x optical zoom, interchangeable lenses, and uses four AA batteries. Using 2200 milliamphere hour (mAh) batteries recently, I took 500 photos and movies over the course of a month before swapping out another set and recharging. The camera does 640 by 480, 30 frame per second mono-audio video up to the size of the memory card on top of its anti-jitter-motor photos.

Finally, I always carry a 12-foot extension cord with multiple plugs on the end, and the alternative two-prong adapter for my Apple power supply. You never know how many friends you have until you have extra outlets.

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use

Longhorn to Help Control Gadget Use 09/09/2004 02:54 PM

If the details in a CNet article are correct, Microsoft's Longhorn will include tools needed(?) by IT managers to put the clamps on people using various gadgets to their work PC's.

Flash drives, iPods, and other doodads — both wired and wireless — that are able to store large amounts of data can be a security risk to the company; unscrupulous employees can use them to load up lots of sensitive documents and carry them out in a pocket. There's also the danger of such devices either accidentally or intentionally introducing viruses and other malicious software into a network.

Companies have been slow to react to the threat posed by digital storage devices in general. It's one that companies have turned a blind eye to for a very long time. If you think back, it used to be that stealing significant secrets was difficult because it was hard to get away with that much paper.

(for some reason I had a flash of Sandy Berger shoving paper in his pants just now!)

Many government agencies and the US military have already banned the on-duty use of some such devices, and many private businesses are following suit. But banning an item and being able to prevent its use are two different things.

Too bad the IT world has to wait for Longhorn to do this; a lot of pilfering can happen between now and then. But I'm sure there are 3rd party developers that are working on something like this as we speak, if they're not out already.

Gadget Magazine Bubble

Gadget Magazine Bubble 06/07/2004 09:06 AM

Om Malik picked up an issue of Primedia's Connected magazine and was so disgusted by its lack of good gadget news and insight that he did what no other angry internet writer would dare to do -- he wrote a blog entry. Fortunately, Om knows what he's talking about, especially when he compliments me and my online colleagues by claiming that a simple aggregation of a few blogs collectively kicks the ass of almost any dead tree magazine around. What's more useful to you: publications with 90 day lead times or blogs that measure scoop time by the minute? Thank god there are a few magazines out there doing it right. I was pleasantly surprised by Mobile PC Magazine's recent laptop comparison issue that used the paper format to show life-sized pictures of each notebook's keyboard -- exactly the sort of thing that leverages (synergizes!) the strengths of the paper medium. But for up to the minute news, what's the point? The internet wounded magazines years ago, and blogs have refined the technique to a deadly art.

(P.S. Magazine editors, I am available for freelance.)

"The Bookman's London" reviews Foyles on

"The Bookman's London" reviews Foyles on
Charing Cross Road...
12/11/2003 03:37 PM

I'm sitting in Foyles' café on the second floor of the massive and esteemed London book store and I'm having one of the most pleasant moments of my life. The café has a nice murmur of activity meandering around me. I'm sat with my laptop on an old school-like table. I've eaten some refreshing food, and am tapping away to myself while simple book-loving folk slip past unhurriedly. Most beautiful of all is the album of simple melancholic bluegrassy adaptations of Christmas carols that is playing in the background. It's sedate, slow, respectful and humble - unlike the desperate to be happy, frantically cheery hysteria of most Christmas music. It's all tremendously comforting.

On the wall is this rather lovely poster which has a review of the store I'm in from "The Bookman's London" (1952) by Frank Swinnerton. It's cast in this lovely typeface (I think it's Parable). Anyway - I tried to find a source online for the (rather indifferent, but still apt) review and there wasn't one. So I thought I'd transcribe it so that if anyone else looked, it would be be there for them to reference. So here's Mr Swinnerton's review of one of the world's finest and oldest (and most randomly organised) Book Shops:

Towards the Oxford Street end stands one of the really extraordinary enterprises of the book world - Foyles. Two brothers began this shop within the memory of many who are living now. By sheer genius they made it the busiest centre for the sale of books known to me. One may go at any time of day into any of the departments - and there seems no end to them - and find everywhere a packed concentration of students seeking books and advice. The atmosphere is that of great, preoccupied busy-ness; the assistants are inexhaustible encyclopaedias; whole ranges of cheap classics, new school books, histories, dictionaries, novels and in fact everything, as far as everything can now be obtained, is at hand for the student's need. There is, of course, a rare book department in Foyles, where those more exclusive in taste can rove; but for the most part this is a store for men and women of small means in search of essential tools. As an institution it is overwhelming.

Oh and if you are one of the more exclusive in taste, you might be interested to know that Mr Swinnerton's book is in fact now itself a bit of a collector's item (albeit not a very expensive one): Walter-Saxen Rare Books.

Cory Doctorow: The Open Knowledge Forums are a series of lectures and panel discussions about the ways that "open knowledge" can benefit the public interest. The next one is a week away, in London, and it's about a plan to produce a set of public domain maps of London (London's maps were produced at tax-payer expense, but can't be freely used; rather, you have to pay the ordinance survey thousands of pounds for the privilege; by contrast, US government maps are free and plentiful, and form the basis for thousands and thousand of competing mapping efforts, from Michelin guides to Google Maps).

There are a number of interesting proposals for this, including deploying an army of GPS-wielding geohackers, and buying up Russian satellite photos of London. Check out this squib from last January's NTK:

London's geowanking fraternity have come up with an intriguing proposition. With a grand's worth of Russian 1-meter resolution satellite pics, they believe they can stitch together an entirely free, redistributable vector database of the capital, freed from the shackles of the Ordnance Survey's restrictive copyrights, and thus open to all manner of GPL-style repurposing.

prod_itrip_mini.jpg imageLooks like Griffin Technology has released a version of the iTrip specifically for the iPod mini which they're calling, unsurprisingly, the 'iTrip mini.' The iTrip is an FM transmitter for the iPod which lets you broadcast to pretty much any FM station you want via a sometimes kludgey 'frequencies as songs' interface. No matching colors, though, as the iTrip mini will only come in white, topping your mini like a stick of deodorant. Still, I have an iTrip for my iPod, and besides the aforementioned interface weirdness, it definitely gets the job done. Griffin is taking pre-orders now for $40 and expects to ship in July.

The iTrip mini works without batteries and can be tuned to any FM frequency. The iTrip mini is expected to ship in July and is available for pre-order for US$39.99.

Off to London

Off to London 02/01/2005 09:26 PM

I'm leaving for London in a couple of hours. I'll probably be posting a bit while I'm there as time and connectivity permit...hopefully some photos as well.

Packing this morning, I came up with a list of the extra stuff that I need to do before going to the airport now that everyone's a terrorist until proven innocent** and the major airlines are all about to go out of business:

  • Clip my fingernails. With nail clippers verboten on planes, you need to do it before you leave.
  • Silence my electric toothbrush. Last time I traveled, my toothbrush turned on in my luggage and the battery was long dead when I got home. Luckily I can plug the power cord into the brush to prevent it from turning on, lest some anxious baggage screener thinks it's a buzzing bomb and/or illegal sexual device.
  • Leave ridiculously early. I am a single male traveling alone on an American Airlines flight to Heathrow on a ticket purchased not so long ago...I'm pretty sure that I'm going to get pulled aside for a "random" screening. My only hope: my summer tan has faded and I'm white as can be (Non-Terrorist White is the hottest color for pants at J. Crew this season)...come on, wave whitey through!
  • Wardrobe change. Gotta wear pants that don't require a belt and shoes that can be slipped on and off with ease.
  • Eat. You may get food on the plane, you may not. With random screenings come random feedings and I don't like my odds in either case.

** The Jan/Feb 2005 Atlantic Monthly has a couple of great articles on terrorism...here's a relevant snippet from Success Without Victory (subscribers only) by James Fallows:

Screening lines at airports are perhaps the most familiar reminder of post-9/11 security. They also exemplify what's wrong with the current approach.

Many of the routines and demands are silly, eroding rather than building confidence in the security regime of which they are part. "You can't go through an airport line without thinking 'This is dumb,'" says Graham Allison, the author of the recent Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe, and the director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, at Harvard, which conducts many projects on anti-terrorism and security. "You have two people whose job it is to see if the name on your driver's license is the same as the name on your ticket -- as if any self-respecting terrorist would fail to think of that. You have a guy whose job is to shout out a reminder for you to take off your jacket and get your computer out of your bag. You've got one-year-olds taking off their shoes. It is hard to think of a way you could caricature it to make it look sillier." At the same time, the ritual manages to be intimidating, as a standing reminder of how much Americans have to fear.
