Making the News

Making the News 05/12/2004 08:27 AM
The murder of Nick Berg was horrible. He seems to have been a good-hearted man who went to Iraq because he wanted to help rebuild the country. But why is it the top headline in newspapers around the country? If the Iraqis had murdered a civilian hostage, the media certainly would have paid attention, but I doubt it would have been the lead story. After all, Berg's going missing on April 9 wasn't deemed newsworthy. Had the Iraqis murdered a hostage by beheading him, the savagery of the act would have made the story more newsworthy, especially in comparison...

"Making the News" Becomes "We the Media"

"Making the News" Becomes "We the Media" 04/24/2004 12:57 PM

By the way, the title of my book is not going to be "Making the News" after all. It's going to be "We the Media" -- which my publisher thinks is more catchy and likely to get browsers in bookstores to glance again. I can't disagree.

Several cool, news-making items from CES 01/10/2004 09:05 PM
LAS VEGAS -- Now that we take such futuristic things as high-definition video, broadband Internet, streaming audio, wireless networking, and dozens of other IT victories for granted in today's connected world, the next step is how companies are now using combinations of these in new products. This year's International Consumer Electronics Show, which first showed the VCR in 1970, the CD player in 1981, and the DVD in 1996, is all about how current technologies are teaming up to create new items. And we found some good examples of how these are going to play out in the next few years.

Independent research firm International Data Corp. (IDC) recently finished work on a report commissioned by Apple that focused on the company's efforts in the scientific life sciences field. While the report was complimentary to many of Apple's accomplishments over the past few years it also pointed out some pitfalls the company would have to watch in the future. This, said an Apple executive, is just what Apple was looking for.

RSS-Chapter-A-Day

RSS-Chapter-A-Day 05/31/2004 11:36 PM

The Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci

"I want to read the Notebooks, but there are 1,565 pages and I have too much else to read.

At a page a day it would take a little over four years, but be manageable.

Fortunately Project Gutenberg (who make freely available online out-of-copyright books) has created a text version of the Notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci. You can download it. It lacks the illustrations of the original, but it's Good Enough.

Using this site, I can read one page a day using my RSS News Reader. Find an RSS News Reader. I started at page 1 on May 30th, 2004. I'm now on page 3. You can either read along with me, or start reading at page 1 today.

Subscribe to one of the following two feeds (copy and paste the URL into your Reader):

¨ Start reading today (starts at page 1): http ://interconnected.org/home/more/davinci/2004-06-01.rss
¨ Read with me (starts at page 3): http ://interconnected.org/home/more/davinci/2004-05-30.rss" [Interconnected, via del.icio.us/tag/rss]

I am thoroughly intrigued by this, and my first thought is how similar this is to what the Chapter-A-Day folks do. Of course, publishers could also offer this service directly to readers, but wouldn't it be great if libraries did? Or if we start providing RSS feeds of new materials from our catalogs, what if we could also provide the first paragraph of each book in the feed?
