released
information about a trojan horse which disguises itself as an MP3
file and can erase personal files before emailing itself to friends.

04/09/2004 04:11 PMYesterday Intego issued a
security
alert which was little more than a software update announcement
thickly veiled as a virus warning. Intego had just released updated
virus definitions for VirusBarrier that protected Mac users against a
conceptual Trojan horse that could theoretically affect Mac OS X. The
Trojan horse, named MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), would exploit a
weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types
of files. The code would be encapsulated in the ID3 tag of an MP3 file
but in reality would be a hidden application that could run on any Mac
running Mac OS X.
This seems to have been just a clever ploy to sell copies of
VirusBarrier, but if any reader has actually found a Mac infected with
this Trojan, please comment below.

Intego Exaggerated the Trojan
04/09/2004 06:47 PMAn article over at
Wired states that Intego has blown this whole
Trojan problem out of proportion. According to experts, The Trojan
(mentioned
here and
here) "...isn't a
working piece of malicious code and can't easily be spread to other
computers. Instead, it is a demonstration of a possible threat." In
response, Intego has apparently changed their story from that of
attacking an imminent threat to preparing for a future threat.
"It is a benign proof of concept that was posted to a newsgroup. It
isn't in the wild, and can't be spread in the wild. It's a non-issue."

VoIP As The Trojan Horse For Broadband?
VoIP As The Trojan Horse For Broadband?
01/04/2005 05:40 PMWhile many telcos are somewhat dreading how VoIP will cut into their
cash cow voice revenue, some are suggesting telcos need to take a
radically different view of VoIP. The key ingredient, though, is
realizing they're not telcos, but broadband providers (something
Verizon has said -- but it's not clear if they fully realize this
yet). Then, VoIP can
act as a trojan horse for broadband. The thinking
is that nearly all of telco customers have voice service, but a small
percentage get broadband from them (if they get it from anyone).
However, if telcos offered to swap out regular phone service for VoIP
without the corresponding internet service, they would
also have the data service ready to go if the customer ever
wanted it. That is, it's easier to convince people just to switch
from a traditional phone line to VoIP (especially since its cheaper)
than to convince them to sign up for broadband
and VoIP.
Basically, they'd be offering a broadband offering that isn't an
internet service -- just for VoIP. However, everything would be set
up for internet and other services, so if a user wanted to switch on
the ISP side, they could do so with a single request, rather than any
installation work. It's certainly an interesting approach, but it's
not likely that the telcos will move in this direction any time soon.

Intego begs for more press
05/12/2004 12:54 PMIntego, the company who
tried to
trick Mac users into buying their product by talking up a possible
exploit that was never
actually exploited, is at it again.
Today a press release crossed the wires warning users of a nother
"trojan horse" that is simply an AppleScript with the icon of
Microsoft Office's installer. If you download Microsoft Office (from a
Warez site?) and it's only 100K, odds are it
is not Microsoft
Office. The said AppleScript (that Intego is calling
AS.MW2004.Trojan just to sound like they know what they are talking
about) deletes your home folder.
Moral of the story? If you have a
file that you don't know where it came from, check the file type
(command-I). Don't waste your money on some faux security software.

Powell forces press aide to let him
answer Meet the Press question
05/17/2004 06:11 AMColin Powell appeared on Meet the Press this weekend, and his
appearance was marred by his press secretary moving the camera and
attempting to end the interview early when Russert, the interviewer,
started to ask a hardball question about the fictional Nigerian
yellow-cake uranium that Powell used as an excuse to go to war in
Iraq.
Most noteworthy about this event was that Powell, rebuked the
press-secretary on air, demanded that the camera be trained on him
again, and then answered the question, describing the intelligence
he'd received as "deliberately misleading."
Lisa Rein's got the video up -- highly recommended.

minutes.

MR. RUSSERT: I think that was one of your staff Mr. Secretary. I
don't think that's appropriate.
SECRETARY POWELL: Emily, get out of the way. Bring the camera back
please. (Camera returns to the interview subject) I think we're back
on Tim, go ahead with your last question.
